It would be really useful if you guys could create a template letter to send to our MPs (in a similar vane to Martin Lewis’s templates), that way it would be easy to start bombarding our representatives with similarly factual letters? Just an idea.

I built an energy park for Keele university about a year ago, solar wind, battery storage, it now powers half the university, i have thought for years that every small farm should have a medium wind turbine, i put up about 200 throughout the country, until stopped by the ninby government moratorium on onshore wind, the company i worked for had over 400 jobs in its pipeline, we spent the next month telling people that their turbine was no longer possible. Why on earth is the position that if you build a house, or have a planning permission for an extension, solar and battery storage should be one of the conditions in that planning permission.
We don’t have joined up thinking, or in the governments case , thinking at all.

      Let's face it,
Rather than giving energy rabates (I'm a recipient)
If the government had seen this coming (they knew) a programme to instill just 1 large panel on every roof, plus a 5kWh battery "under the stairs" could have taken many homes off the grid during peak times and would probably cost less.
Even if it was more, the security afforded NEXT TIME would be worth it.

Plus have an Hyundai Ioniq car, I save £1200 in fuel, £140 in road tax, at least £300 in running costs. Total cost of PV and batteries, Eddie and charging point £15,500. Sadly it is the irrational people that can't do simple maths that are pushing us down a "renewables" path that is simply unsustainable that are the problem because no "renewables" project to date has ever been used to produce more solar panels or wind turbines and power the local cities that are pushing huge subsidies for them as well. Until that circle is squared we are simply stealing subsidy money from poor people to hand to rich people.

The requirement to fit PV panels on all new roofs- east, south , and west facing is essential, and should become a normal technology in building construction.

Talking about batteries and storage is important. My concern is that we are creating large grid storage batteries using lithium ion batteries, which are going to be limited, and maybe aren’t necessary for grid storage, but are needed for electric cars. Also, we need to remember that as people transition to electric cars, they will automatically have a good sized battery to use, so don’t need one under their stairs. However we have to convince EV makers to add vehicle to grid capability.

Hi. Love all the content and learned lots of stuff, however (possibly contentious). Solar is great, I have it, its a game changer on our house, all new builds should have it, all new commercial buildings should have it as part of planning, and all existing warehouses structurally sound enough should have it. I would also suggest floating solar in the middle of lakes is a good idea, however for now personally i am hesitant about installing solar on green land. Not saying I am against it but i think there are far better places to stick panels up 1st. On shore wind surely will take up less land than solar farms?

roidroid, It is sad that a renter can not get the landlord to approve a solar system for the property! I guess the landlord can get it installed, and pay for it, then raise your rent a bit to cover the monthly cost - say $50 a month. Then the renter can save $50 or $75 a month in electric bill.

Robert, PV penetration is now over 3 million homes out of 9.8 million households, or about 30.9% but batteries are only 1.1% so 98.9% of people do NOT have any batteries because the cost is SO high... Consequently, this PV is sold to the grid for (mandated feed in tariff) 5.2 cents but people buying PV power (in huge surplus and poorly used) may have to pay 3 TIMES off the feed-in tariff. MANY people claim RE is cheap but it is only generating returns on 1/3 of the time. In USA, Wind LCOE average is $133.02 and for solar LCOE is $78.92. These are 300-400% that of coal or gas... Actually I highly recommend you interview Gerard Reid & Laurent Segalen of Redefining Energy. People simply do NOT understand that each PV farm & wind turbine makes the next PV or wind farm LESS viable (in terms of returns).

On the other hand they're building 3000 houses three miles from me. Not one of them has Solar, they are all heated by gas and none of them have EV points fitted.
When I built my house 2 years ago the planners demanded I installed an EV point (which I would have anyway, despite not owning an EV at the time) and they also wanted me to install a wood-burner so I had an alternative heat source to back up my Air Source Heat Pump, There's no logic to the way planning works and the government doesn't give a toss

Got a few ideas while listening. rainwater capture off solar farms to water the plants under farm. North side of solar farm have a tower for long distance wireless internet. 7 miles away is a tower on a hill that we could connect to for internet (still use at&t as its a few dollars cheaper). I was thinking a whole network of these would allow for fast low cost unlimited data where ever users are, even if they travel. could be powered by solar and batteries on site. plus $$ from internet business would cover cost of installing fiber to site and allowing them to monitor site easily. Another plus is even though your installing fiber infrastructure to all these sites you won't need it for end users where ever they are.

Hi all we hear about is we must reduce our emissions, carbon zero ,tbh we are worlds away from achieving that ,just recently there was cop27 ,same old rubbish, what’s happened after cop26 ,as far as I see not a lot ,haven’t we just had the hottest summer 🙉let’s be honest ,right at this moment ,the very last thing that the general public are thinking about is reducing emissions, for the average day to day person ,just being able to afford to pay for the basics ,just last night watching the news ,they are talking about not enough chimney sweeps, so more needed to be trained ,another person said having a log fire that’s no good more harmful emissions, nobody is going worry about that ,it’s all about lowering the costs and keeping yourself warm ,
It’s ok saying let’s get air source heat pumps ,yes there is a £5000 grant , but most can’t afford another 10-15 grand ,on top of that ,there are many renewable energy sources, but if ya can’t afford it you can’t get it ,so how is anyone in that situation supposed to help with the climate 🤷‍♂️
If our aim is to become carbon neutral, there needs to be more help ,and right at this moment there isn’t any, the government need to stop saying what we need to do ,and bloody start doing something about it ,like food banks when I was younger their wasn’t such a thing, and now they are popping up all over the place ,even in some hospitals they have food banks just for nurses etc ,this country has fallen apart ,and isn’t going to get better soon ,and it’s a real shame .

    Question for Andrew and Mark.
    .
The "planning issues" all seem to revolve around *connection* if these generation systems "to the Grid".
    .
Would it not be possible to simply *remove* individual homes, communities, etc *from* the grid?
    .
For instance, at home level, a switch that simultaneously removes the grid connection, before connecting to either a self contained or "street" generation system which has no possibility to cross connect that source to the Grid would seem to solve the "substation" problem?
    .
It's a "half way house" not ADDING Grid capacity, but could potentially (sorry) remove huge amounts of peak load.
There could still be a passive system for the Grid to monitor the available capacity, anticipate when it will be removed and for how long.
    .
    Just a thought.

All this "power wall' stuff is a revamp of an old idea. Ditto using LiFePo4 batteries (slightly less chance of igniting themselves) instead of lead acid tech.
All very well with lithium tech until you have to charge below 0C.
Lithiums really, really don't like a high charge at 0C and below.

I never see it suggested but it makes sense to have some solar and batteries rather than a whole grid tie in. Its better than none and can add can keep you functional with the bare minimum needs for your food preservation, work at home, overhead lighting, staving off boredom, etc.

I would concede "something" is better than nothing.
But, no need to lavish huge sums on "protection", power cuts don't usually last for hours and hours on end.
Plus there's always the pay back time to consider.
And, providing you don't open the freezer during a power cut you could get away with just running a few lights, small TV and C/H pump/ fan on your gas or oil boiler with a suitably sized inverter ... suitably sized means at least five times the load you intend to run.
Eg a 300W inverter will "just" about run a 60W TV although the inverter's internal cooling fans will come on, which means the inverter is too small ... or it's a budget item from China ... and the claimed output is some myth.
You should also read up on ordinary inverters and Pure Sine Wave inverters. Not everything will run off an ordinary "modified square wave" inverter.
The size of battery bank to run an entire household would need to be pretty substantial, plus requiring a substantial solar array to keep the battery bank topped up.
As mentioned above the inverters would in turn need to be suitably large capacity ... probably 5kW as an absolute barest minimum for a small house.
Plenty of guff on-line so suggest you research the "science" so as to ensure you understand the topic before getting a contractor or doing it yourself.
You might find a contractor will carefully avoid talking about the weather.
I worked at a theatre in Cornwall and we got a grant to have a 5kW array fitted fitted to an "ideal roof".
The system never produced the maximum unless the sky was blue and nary a cloud on the horizon at the height of summer.
Usually the output was around half the implied maximum and in the winter it was more of a "roof ornament" collecting leaf and twig debris from trees some distance away.
What might be of more use in the autumn/winter/early spring is a wind turbine.
There are very advanced designs which are claimed to be efficient and reduce the wind noise.
I suppose it is not beyond the wit of man to design a pitched roof which has ports to allow wind to spin a wind turbine(s) concealed within.
Given sufficient attention is given to noise decoupling from the roof timbers then it might be worth another "Trevor Baylis" having an experiment.

Great work chaps. I live a cycle ride away from the Cleve Hill solar farm development in Kent of which I am in favour. Admittedly I don't live close enough for it to affect me much in a negative way.
There are all sorts of local voices against: it is massive, going on special land which will be spoilt environmentally, it will be a giant eyesore where once there were sheep grazing. There are concerns about lorry traffic in tiny lanes being a noise and a danger for two or more years. Folk are appealing for a cycle path to be created through the park.
Sounds to me that if Exagen were involved they would be able to put most of these concerns to bed. I've been thinking that surely sheep grazing, market gardens, natural areas, cycle routes could all be accommodated amongst the panels. It's great to know that is the case, I just hope whoever is the developer can see that is the way to win people round.
I have no idea who is involved in the creation of this project but I hope if it's not Exagen that it's a company with the same moral compass and values.

Maybe before they could support 10 per acre of land with the grass grown there, and with solar panels that might reduce to about 8 per acre? And it will give the sheep a nice shady place to stay on a hot sunny day, or coverage on a rainy day. If you sent them to Africa or any poor place they could fix them and for the first time they have electricity. They wouldn't care that they are only 80 per cent working because 50 plus per cent panel gives more than a 100 per cent one they can't afford! I can't stand that we in the rich countries throw stuff away that is good or not that bad!! Shame on thinking this way! But I don't think it has to be major changes that make any wind (or solar) installations unworkable. Just percentage points.
I think we'll have challenges in future growing our food crops, with temperature and rain changes meaning different crops and different pests to deal with.

Eventually the energy, A.I., automation/robotics, and many other technology revolutions will bring the costs of daily life way down; meanwhile these revolutions will raise the quality of life of the average person so high that, the distinctions between the economic classes will be ao narrow as to make the distinctions pointless as these revolutions will eventually make the need for money pointless. The reason I say this is; soon the speed at which technology will be advancing so fast that auch things as, politics, economic systems, etc, will be outdated due to how slowly they opperate. According to Wired and Valerio Pellegrini, the asteroid 'Davida', which has a diameter of 326 kilometers, has been identified as the most valuable asteroid in the belt, with a resource value estimated to be some 27 quintillion (26,990,000,000,000,000,000) U.S. dollars. Such mineral wealth will drive the costs of resources down to being virtually free, and will be made morso free due to the cost of obtaining these resources being nearly free due abundant and nearly free, just as abundant and nearly free energy, A.I., Automation, etc, will make the process of manufacturing anything virtually free. This will eventually raise the quality of life for the average person so high; the difference in the standard of living across wconomic classes will become so narrow as to make any distinctions pointless. I think as we reach this point; the noteriety individual obtain through their huge home, their personal aircraft, personal watercraft, etc, will deminish. We are already seeing this with Tesla's vehicles, that outperform many luxury splrtscars at a fraction of the costs. As battery storage greatly deminishes in costs at an ever higher power density, their prices will dramatically drop, and robotaxies will make car ownership pointless for many people. This only hits the tip of the iceburg of the technological change the next 10-30 years will bring, let alone the next 100 - 1,000 years.

We need to use livestock as part of weed, pest and fertility management instead of relying on harmful synthetic chemical inputs in a diverse, natural biome-based polyculture based on foods from perennials, shrubs, trees and vines. This will reverse the trend that allows CO2 to be aerosolized by bare earth/fallow practices and overgrazing and start sequestering much more than is lost while providing more healthier food, livestock, soils, lumber, etc and sequestering carbon , and water at a rate faster than is released.
This combined with harvesting methane for fuel, adding a lot more passenger and freight rail instead of cars, using more minisplits/heatpumps and other well-considered, impactful choices will be better than going vegan as veganism still primarily relies on monocultured annual supported by synthetic chemical inputs. Which do a lot more harm overall than our current use of fossil fuels.

Robert is the anti-Clarkson but with the same approach in one way - rage at things he doesn’t like which satisfies a large section of his audience. It generates likes! For Clarkson it’s Eco-mentalists, soul-less “electrical” cars that run on batteries using cobalt mined by 10-year-olds, etc.. All of Clarkson’s rants are largely fact-free and Robert’s are not but DO contain an awful lot of animus towards those who are climate-deniers and lovers of diesel SUVs. Honestly I find both quite hard to take because it doesn’t solve anything. In Clarkson’s case he doesn’t want to solve anything, he merely wants clicks and the money they generate. A certain section of society (largely quite gammon and hateful) lap his stuff up but I’m not sure that many liberals like myself are swayed by a similar ranting style. I’m already “on side” with renewable energy, efficient electric cars, solar on homes, batteries, etc but if I weren’t already there I’m pretty sure I’d be put off by one of Bobby’s rants if I came across this by chance. Thanks for all you do and have done in this cause, Robert but please, please tone it down a bit? Facts only, how about that?
