When I came to check if they needed refills or anything, I grabbed a pepper shaker off an empty table, got the kid's attention, put a napkin over it, slid the shaker off of the table when he wasn't paying attention, and smashed the napkin down while thumping the shaker on the underside of the table. This blew the kid's mind because to hm, I'd just shoved the pepper THROUGH the table without breaking anything. Kid stopped crying, and spent the rest of the meal trying to figure out how I'd done it. Never saw him or the parents again to my knowledge, but I'd like to believe that it gave the kid a passing interest in magic. If nothing else, I got a nice tip from the parents that day.

Val Valentino was definitely not some two-bit nobody magician. That is kind of why his reveal caused such an uproar and string of lawsuits. Sure, that name means nothing to the average Joe and would give the impression this guy is a nobody. But how many magicians can the average Joe actually name? David Copperfield, Houdini....and.....yeah, that's it. Valentino is a pretty big deal and what he did ruffled a LOT of feathers but he said he did it to get the magic community to innovate again because the Internet was coming and it was going to work out their tricks left and right, so they had to get to talking again. Well that, and he made a lot of money. I'm sure that helped a bit.

This guy wasn't hated because he revealed tricks, every illusion he showed was like magic 101 that the high level guys were already lightyears ahead of. Magicians hated him and his show because he took something that they used to inspire amazement in people and painted it as them making the audience suckers. He spread the idea that magic was just a field full of people who only wanted to deceive you and and turn you into suckers and that only by watching his show could you prevent yourself from getting got. It was such an offense to people who's entire life's passion was to entertain and fill people with that innate sense of wonder, then this nobody comes on TV and tells you that magicians are nothing but grifters who want to make fools out of you. He took something as positive as the magic community and painted it in a needlessly negative light for millions of people. That did much more damage than him revealing some mediocre illusions.

To be fair, magicians are trying to trick the audience. What makes magic shows fun is intent. The intent isn't to scam people or peddle pseudoscience, or some crap. It's to give people a sense of wonder. It's like reading a book, or watching a play. You're emerging yourself in a world of fantasy. Yes it's all a lie, but it's about believing a lie for fun.

He spread the idea that magic was just a field full of people who only wanted to deceive you and and turn you into suckers and that only by watching his show could you prevent yourself from getting got.
It was such an offense to people who's entire life's passion was to entertain and fill people with that innate sense of wonder, then this nobody comes on TV and tells you that magicians are nothing but grifters who want to make fools out of you. He took something as positive as the magic community and painted it in a needlessly negative light for millions of people.
That did much more damage than him revealing some mediocre illusions.

i personally still enjoy magic trick shows despite knowing the secrets not many ppl can pull a trick off even with knowledge of how to do the trick
To be fair, magicians are trying to trick the audience.
What makes magic shows fun is intent.
The intent isn't to scam people or peddle pseudoscience, or some crap.
It's to give people a sense of wonder. It's like reading a book, or watching a play. You're emerging yourself in a world of fantasy.
Yes it's all a lie, but it's about believing a lie for fun.

I'm really glad this show was made, because it drove magicians to make something new, something better, and it worked.
