- I just bought an Akai MPK88 Keyboard controller so I thought I'd show off it's features cause I haven't posted anything in a while.
Sorry about the horrible audio quality, the mic of the camera is terrible
This was incredibly helpful and very easy to understand !
Thanks for this! Best tutorial on the MPK88. I have one of these and it confuses me. I haven't read the manual yet. I'm a guitarist and brought this to learn piano. Hopefully, I'll get my head around it. I actually dropped it two days after buying it and destroyed the usb connection and the forced sheared components off the circuitboard. I ordered a new (rear) circuitboard, received it today and installed it - so many bloody screws. Everything works perfect and I'm so happy. This thing is far too heavy! Oh, I thought you were playing Muse, Reborn but I maybe wrong. Sounds good either way :-)
This controller is a dream !
+goatstaog i woke up to this reality 2 years ago.
can you play this as a normal keyboard?
Just got the mpk88 i love it its definately worth buying caught it on sale for 500 i have no problems at all cant listen to some peoples comments because everyone has diffrent prefrences but if u can afford the price its a must have keyboard and the keys feel great they feel better then the ones i play for my piano lessons two thumbs up
Good stuff. Really good stuff kid. You're going places.
Thanks for the nice overview of the features.
i think you've almost convinced me here. been thinking on it way to long.
Thank you so much, this is on my list!
I've found it to be quite nice the feeling, it's hammer action, meaning it should feel exactly, if not close to piano.
Some people find the mpk88's keys to be "heavier" / stiffer then an actual piano's keys, but it all depends on you. I recommend trying it out at a store, the feel before buying it.
I have the MPK61, and I love it. Ironically, everyone seems to focus on the PADS in these reviews. I never use them. I'm used to programming drums with a sampler keyboard, so I use keys for percussion as well. Anyway, nice review.
Thank you for the video, it's super helpful!! Do you know if you can use the split function to have two different DAW patches/instruments on different sides of the keyboard? Also, how did you set it to have arp on the left and not on the right? I'm new so I'm a little confused about the multiple channels thing and how it works, especially together with a DAW
I got the 49 a cupple months ago. Still good.
I find it quite nice to play on, I've never used a Korg Kronos or Yamaha Motif, but all 3 are hammer action keyboards, so should feel relatively similar. Some people that I know find the keys a bit too heavy compared to a real piano though, so your best option would be going to a store and trying out all 3.
You can easily map any of the controls to do that, but if you mean internally of keys, the ARP probably would work for most things.
great video, very informative!
You can use the arp without a computer (built in patterns, up, down, random, chord, inclusive, exclusive), but not self created patterns.
The device is purely a controller, you would assign the samples in pro-tools and then link them to the pads.
You're doing amazing things man. I appreciate all of your great information. I'm a little nee to all this. I really appreciate the way you mapped your pads. I will be running Logic Pro x. Should I be running a new DAW that will work with the Mpk the way you have it going. How are you doing all this? Thank you so much.
If you open up the Editor on your computer, you'll see that one of the pad banks is already mapped to selecting instruments. Just replicate the same for the top 4 of all the pads.
Actually I quite liked the feel of this keyboard. But that's just my preference. If you want to go for just the feeling of keys then go for a Studiologic 990
Thanks. How does it feel compared to the current hot keyboards like Kronos or Motif?
Asumming that "Synthogy Ivory II american concert D" is a vst or has a standalone that supports midi input, then this should work fine.
Especilly if you can change the velocity mapping within the program.
It looks good but i dont like that sticky sounds produced by keys while playing. Lot of cont keybds has problems on this sticky matter. Thanks for ur review thiu
Unfortunately the MPK88 can only output midi data, so you have to either connect it to a computer, or some other sort of MIDI sequencer.
Hi how are you I was just wondering I have Mpk 88
I can I get the mod will to work with studio one
Can you please give me some guidance on what to do
How did you do that drums and piano right away: I can not get that with Akai 249
It amazes me that an 88 key controller needs an octave modulator.
why if you playing drums at c3 why you want to have to reach two feet to to reach you first bass drum in a kit.
Do you play it with out computer or laptop? If yes, how do you do that. I have the Sam Paino, but I don’t know how to make it sound from the speaker. Can you show me how to connect it to the speaker to make it sound from the speaker?
The kymeyboard is only a controller, it needs to be connected to a computer or midi synth to produce sound.
Please, can you record a turorial how to set drums on pads and piano on keys together like in 7:50 for FL Studio? Thank you very much! I cant find it on YT.
I really had my mind set on the Mpk88but after listening to many reviews I don't think I can put up with the loud keys. What's your take on the keys? Thanks for the review though.
It entirely depends on what you're used to. If you're used to / like synth action keyboards, then you'll likely find the keyboard really stiff. If you're a classically trained pianist on the other hand, you should find the keys just fine. MY suggestion would be to go into a store, and try out the keyboard there before making a final decision.
Great video, thanks. I own one of these and have issues setting up the functions. I'd love to know how to map the sliders and knobs to something useful. Thanks again
What're you using as your DAW?
Will Xyen I'm using Cubase, but I'm considering changing to something called VIP 3.0, unless you have a better idea perhaps?
Sorry, I've never used either, but VIP3.0 should just work with the MPK88, since they're both by akai.
From a quick search for Cubase: www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=83384
Thank you sir
we just want to play it for now. not do a lot of fancy stuff
Does the piano tone already come with the controller or do you have to use software. If so, what software do you use
Software, I was using Addictive Keys by XLN Audio iirc.
@@willxincThanks man
I know it's late, but, how did you map the pads in FL Studio to play different instruments/synths??
hey man can you do a video on how to map different instruments to drum pads on fl studio. Would really appreciate it thanks
Same here.
Thank you. Very helpful.
Hey Will whats that melody that you play 1:10? I'd love to know that
How do I set different synths to the pads using Fruity Loops?
FL Studio
along with Nexus, NI Massive and Omnisphere.
Hey I need some help setting my MPK88, I can't get the pads to work when the MIDI clock is set to external. The whole this is messed up. Can you help?
Make sure note repeat is off or your external source is actually running a midi clock to the mpk88 (by USB or through the midi in port)
@@willxinc Thanks for the quick reply, I'm trying to get this all working in FL studio, the clock to sync with arp and note repeat. Need a hand on config if you can help me out? It's much appreciated
@@gurnaamsingh7674 I don't use FL anymore, but assuming it's hooked up by midi, make sure that the midi clock is being sent to its output (should be under settings > midi)
@@willxinc Got it ALL working now. Thanks for helping. I used a generic preset and made changes. This still is an epic controller
how do you connect it to the speaker to give sound?
You need a computer or synth to connect it to via USB or Midi
what is your vst that are you using for this controler?
can u loop without computer? and does it have patterns for that?
Hello! Thank you very much for your video. I have AKAI MPK49 without SPLIT button. Please can I set split keyboard without this button? Thank you.
What DAW are you using? You should be able to do something similar with some built in stuff in both FL and Abelton
I use FL studio. I have a some split sounds on VST Nexus. But I think that it must me possible to set split keyboard on mpk49.
There doesn't seem to be a built in way on the MPK49, only the MPK249 from what I can see.
Thank you for answer. I just discover to split keyboard in FL studio through the layer.
Hey Will, can you tell me if this is an anolog keyboard synth or just a controller? Thanks in advance.
+todei79 It's just a controller.
+Will Xyen bummer. thanks though!
question, my son is learning piano. I thought this might be good to learn then do more advanced work.
I don't see a computer. can you use this without computer? I am confused about the midi computer connection. can this be used like a piano without the computer?
if a computer is required, is it just to set it up or all of the time?
can an ipod/ipad be used ?
You need a computer or some sort of hardware synth in order to use this particular keyboard. For learning piano it'd be best to get something called a branded as a "digital piano" (vs the Akai MPK88 which is a keyboard) as they can be used standalone without a computer. Yamaha and Roland both have some available. It'd be best to goto a music store, and asking the staff there for suggestions / try out the keyboards.
Thank you !
Can I use it as a piano without a computer?
we just bought this and are trying to do software on computer but cannot get it to work. and the keyborad does not play?
just did a check up on heather mck shes still trying to figure out the software and trying to get some sort of sound out of the mpk88. shes getting close guys. lets keep praying for her.
hey man had a question could you inform me how you set the pads up in fl studio i for the life of me can not get it to work correctly like you have it. Thanks
Don Dayter You need to install the templates that are included on the installation CD
Will Xyen thanks yeah i didnt get the installation cd i purchased it used from Guitar center a while back. But i figured it out now so im golden. Thanks for the info though man...
www.akaipro.com/product/mpk88#downloads
Should have all the stuff you need.
what program you using?
I was wondering how you got the VST "vyzex" to run simultaneously while the mpk88 is enabled in Fl studio? I get a message that there's not enough memory available for this task when i enable akaimpk88 in fl studio. When i turn off the vst, it enables. Sorry that this post isn't related to the video.
The preset editor right?
I do all my preset editing on the keyboard itself, or beforehand.
Also Vyzex is a 32 bit application, so if you're using 64bit FL Studio, it won't let you share the ports at the same time.
Will Xyen Now i see. By the way, When your hitting the pads for drums (Kick and Snare), are u using the FPC, or are they from the instrument tracks from the step sequencer. Thanks for the quick reply :D
Wu way I haven't used FL in a while (I switched to Ableton), but if I remember correctly there's a template (both on the MPK and a software one in FL, both need to be selected), as well as some settings you need to change (midi preview channel or something. Once this is setup, the 16 pads will do different things per bank (A plays middle C for the respective instrument, B selects the active instrument, C mutes the instrument, and D acts as regular notes).
A would be instrument tracks,
While D (in the FL preset, or A-D in the generic one) could be used with FPC.
It should be on the CD that came with the keyboard, if you don't have that, or if you'd like to chat more directly, add me on skype: willycando
Ok. I got the hang of it now thanks a lot Will. By the way, im curious why you changed DAWs?
Wu way I was having some timing issues with FL Studio, it was shifting all my notes by a tiny amount when recording live. So when I played it back, it wasn't the same and some note timings were off. I decided to try out Ableton instead and liked the workflow, so I switched over to that instead.
Hi, will this keyboard lag while recording midi notes in DAW?
Which sound card is recommended to have lag free input?
The keyboard itself is just a midi controller, there should be no perceivable lag coming from the MPK88 itself.
Make sure you have a low latency soundcard, (I have a Focusrite Scarlett), but anything that supports ASIO should work (on Windows).
got a lot to learn if your first blame for latency is the midi controller.i could go further in depth but youll be a better person searching aimlessly for the answers for the next 20 years.
@@Jordanchicity23 sorry to dissappoint you but it just took me 3 years only. Now I am a working music composer and I know a lot better now than 3 years back then when I made the above comment and btw now I own Focusrite Scarlett sound Interface thanks to the recommendation by Will :)
Derrrr
what does it run on? battery or charger?
what if i were to tell you that it ran off a mystical cord that the greek gods refer to as USB i believe its pronounce you es bee. something like that. you can also run you car battery to it with some jumper cables.
@@Jordanchicity23girl pls
where is the speaker on akai mpk88
It doesn't have any.
if we do not connect the speaker so when we play can listen
the keyboard itself doesn't produce any sounds, it's a controller for other devices.
mean we not connect speaker but can listen the sound
No you cannot.
