    I always wish I had propagated more last year! So agree it takes a lot to get started with a new plant. We try and buy 10 plants of good size when the they go on a 50% off sale. That might yield at least 50-100 cuttings. Even more if you are aggressive. Then within 2 years you should really be on your way. Thanks as always.

      That's a good approach to building up your stock. I’ve yet to “over propagate” anything. I don’t know what the upper limit is on some of these plants

    I totally agree that it is wise to have a good variety of plants. I am working on my inventory. I’m going kinda slow.. Maybe too slow! While this year has been my best year of sales, I’m still on a tight budget. I have bought a few different perennials to propagate. Just not enough quantity to have a good representation of each variety. What I added this year will not be ready until at least 2026. Until I build my account, I feel that I will have to test each plant in small quantities.. I just ordered in a couple liners to boost my GG’s and added 50 Little Giants to try. Thanks for your advice and insight. It is very helpful to see other people’s experiences and learn from them. God Bless ❤

      A big part of this game is confidence... and you'll only gain it by getting a small win, then another, then another. Eventually, you get competent at what you're doing, no matter how small, and you realize, "I can do this thing!"

    Another great video, Craig. I’m coming to the end of my infrastructure phase (at least for this stage of my nursery), and boy is it a good feeling. I can only imagine the cost of your infrastructure phase, and the relief you must feel!
    Question for you: Do you do many ornamental grasses? They’re pretty popular here in the Willamette Valley (NW Oregon), but just wanted to hear your experience.
    I’ve been dividing the MESS out of several varieties, and received a lot of compliments on the “displays” planted in my yard, last summer from passersby’s.
    If interested, I’d be happy to ship you a few varieties of differing sizes/forms to play around with.
    Best wishes on your continued success, Odem Family.
    And Craig, you don’t realize what an inspiration you’ve been to me. You’re a true family man, and you’ve set an example of the type of father and business owner I want to be for my stepson, stepdaughter, and my son.
    I really appreciate you, these UA-cam videos, and your honest, upfront approach to your successes and failures. You’re an inspiration, my friend. Thank you.

      Grasses? I haven't done much with them. My first crack at it, I had about 50 going into winter, and they all died. Not sure how to winter them, but people ask me for them pretty often and I know I'd do well to learn them. Glad you're here, and I do appreciate the kind words - they make a difference.

    Although variety is the crown Prince of a good nursery, but the King is multiple turnover through a season is KING. Not sitting on inventory throughout a season alleviates stagnation of cash flow and allows financial exploration towards plants in high demand. Good luck.

    I grow several types of plants and trees from seed. The places that have virtually no online presence is usually deliberate. They reach out to other places and offer their products. That's why they can be so hard to find. Great video as always...

    Your right whole sale nurseries seem to like to hide. I kept looking for wholesale nurseries in my area and through the internet I had no luck I drove one day in this one area I found five nurseries I couldn't find any info on them at all so I went I stopped in at each one of them I will be doing business with two of them . The others only do business with big corporations and landscape The landscape company has to do thousands of dollars before they'll do business with them. I've always thought variety because most people like lots of different things no matter if it's plants clothing or home decorations. Plants do sell them selfies all you have to do is greet your customer smile answer their questions give them help if needed. As always thanks for the info

    Ive learned so much from you. I’m just a hobbyist but I like to propagate for my garden clubs annual plant sale in May and for family. Have you given any thought to starting or buying in Native Plants for your area. It’s getting to be a (great) trend and it is a niche market here in the northeast as not a lot of nurseries carry them. Some of the sources are Izel and Prarie Moon that will provide plugs. Also I’m going to try a bubbler approach this February to start some woody plants.

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Місяць тому

      I sell plenty of native plants, but as you mentioned, it is definitely a "niche," and I'm not interested in becoming a niche nursery. I want to have as many varieties (non-invasive) as I possibly can and let buyers determine what they want - native or otherwise. Probably 8 or 9 out of 10 customers don't even know what "native" plants are. They're just looking for plants and I'm glad to sell them.

    QUESTION
    Your channel and a few others has definitely inspired me to try out the nursery business! I live in eastern Oklahoma on a 90 acre property. My concern is that, there are a 3 giant nurseries within about 30 miles of me, but within 60 miles there are several decent sized cities with lots of new residential and commercial development. So my question is, do you think I could still make sufficient sales if i offer delivery and my prices are low/competitive?

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Місяць тому

      I don't think those nurseries matter at all. I think if you go with a unique business model, price your plants so you can make sufficient profit, and be a great small enterprise to do business with... you'll get more customers than you'll ever be able to satisty. That's not hyperbole.

  • @nataliaorsini1899
    @nataliaorsini1899 Місяць тому

    Hey there! This is a plant question maybe you can help with. I have a nursery here in central Florida, Natalia’s garden center. Been following your channel since before I opened I love seeing your success. I have a problem with arborvitae and cypress. At times they will brown from the center and die back. Any recommendations?

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Місяць тому

      Cypress? Not sure. Arborvitaes like Green giants, are not hardy in your area. Your probably zone 9/10. Arborvitaes need a period of dormancy, induced by freezing temperatures, to survive.

    Going to be "Opening" this coming March.
    I've sold a bit on FB, but this will be my first open-to-the-public weekend.
    (It will be for just a Friday and Saturday - sort of testing the waters.)
    I think I've gone opposite in the variety issue. I have a whole lot of different plants (hoarder's syndrome??) but not a whole lot of anything.
    My biggest fear is that I won't sell. My second biggest fear is that I'll sell everything and have to start all over, 🤣🤣

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Місяць тому +1

      YES!! Selling out is the best and worst thing... it's kind of a crazy thing, really. Actually, it's never bad... it's the goal.

    My biggest hangup is living in a residential area. I can't have open hours. I've been thinking about renting a place in a business zone, but fear of making a profit is holding me back. Why would people choose me over the big box stores or other nurseries? I think I need to either stay small in my backyard or go really big and rent or buy a commercial building. I would still have to make it during the winter months. It's really scary either way.

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  2 дні тому +1

      Build a small, invisible nursery in your backyard. Become a great propagator of 10 varieties of plants. Wholesale rooted cuttings / liners shipped right from your house. Your neighbors would never know.

    I just started selling plants about a year ago. I just did my first batch of arborvitae’s and I’m wondering what you price them at and at what size. Also how long does it take for them to get to selling size for you?

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Місяць тому +1

      About 2 years to get to trade 1 size. I sell those for $8 each.

    Thanks Craig. Entering 2nd year and thank you for the encouragement on the start up cost. I knew going in but I have also thought, Gheeze, when will it get set in place 😅 Question, so far I have advertised very locally. Community groups, my page and personal page. I haven't "boosted" yet. I know this year, with more stock now, it's time. So are you "boosting" on FB or do you mean posting on Marketplace? That would be a big help to some guidance there. Thank you for the journey. 🤗

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Місяць тому

      I do paid ad through my business page. And, occasionally, I will boost a marketplace post as well, depending on what I'm selling. I don't do marketplace boost for regular ho hum plant sales.
