  • It was great to get on the water and use the Wingboard and Take Off boards. With the sizes on paper looking very comparable across the ranges, understanding which board is right for you could be confusing. But after using them we could feel the big difference between the 2 board ranges and can understand why they're both in the Starboard foil range.

Hey guys, I would like your thoughts on my first wing board. I am an experienced 160lb windsurfer 30 years, shortboarder and comfortable SUP surfer 10 years. Looking to get into wingfoiling. My local shop has a Take Off 5’5” 95l and a Wingboard 6’5” 115l. My local sailing area is inland and gusty, typical winds 10-20knts. I do occasional trips to the ocean to mostly SUP surf and would be interested in some SUP foiling. I am retired so will have lots of time to learn. The 115l 6’5” seems like I would learn quickly on but I am worried about out growing it too quickly. The 95l board seems like it would be slower to learn on but might last more years as I progress. I would welcome your thoughts, thanks for the great videos

At your weight and with your Windsurfing background I would say 95L would be the one. Myself and Will have both come from Windsurfing and this gives you a massive head start. Yes like you say 115 will be easier but im sure 95 would be fine. Thanks reuben

Thanks for the in-depth, practical, knowledgeable intel on the Stbd boards! Particularly these as they are very similar. As more of a beginner, despite thinking I'm intermediate, these insights are valuable. More please. I would be interested in guidance on the right size/shape of foil for swell riding as a 75kg rider. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your question! Are you looking to ride swell or carve / turn on breaking waves? Cheers, Will - SUPboarder

I'd like to ride swell flagged out. The basics of the process would be useful for me. Thanks!

@@Highrocker1298 We could make a whole video series on this - lots to cover..... At a high level, if you want to glide on bumps such as in a downwind scenario you need a foil thats going to keep up with the swell, and as all swells travels different speeds that can vary. Smaller area foils generally ride faster but also the shape and foil section have a big impact. Higher aspect shapes will be, in general better at speed. Personally , I like a foil for gliding in swell thats got a low stall speed as this means you can get through the low power points easier. BUT! Low stall speed does seem to limit top speed a little. When in swell, at a lower overall experience or skill level, a foil that is 'secure' is going to reward you. Look out for a review coming soon of some Duotone Foils that are designed for wave riding and have very noticeable attributes that make it feel more secure. You should learn a lot from this video. @@SUPboardermag Thanks for the fantastic, in-depth response, Will! Nice simplified, practical guidance. Sounds like a med or low aspect foil with good lift and low stall speed would be a good place for me to start. That's what I had found when trying to swell ride with my big 2050 sqcm Axis foil. The swell would overtakes the foil and I would have to engage the wing to get back onto the swell. I'll stay with that system and keep learning and watch your upcoming video for future guidance. Thanks again, sir!

Interesting that in the custom board market the trend is very much towards longer and thinner ‘hybrid’ style boards (18 to 22 inches wide) but the big manufacturers do not seem to be going that way. Maybe because they need to appeal to a broader cross section of people?

Yes this is one of the reasons. And also customs can change and adapt to the market trends quicker. Thanks for your comment Reuben
