    105 degrees Texas, Tree Removal Co called for help with a fallen tree. At night the "safe" tree cutting pros cut away the part of the tree containing the hive for me.... way to hot to work bees in the heat of the summer in the middle of a dearth.
    I simply relocated the stump and used a chain to secure the stump to another tree. over the winter i will treat for mites and then next spring I will open the tree and make nucs. Watching how you transition the bees after the removal and into a hive is seldom seen. Good needed info was seen today, Thanks.

      Over the years I have taken many logs with bee in them back to the abbey. Unfortunately, they never lasted for more than a year or two. Because of that I now open the tree and remove the bees and have way better success of keeping the bees alive. I hope you will check out more of my bee removal videos and let me know what you think of those as well. Who knows, you may find some info useful to you. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.

    I vacuum the queen frequently [unfortunately] - I'm getting better @ finding her first during cut-outs but they seem to survive the journey just fine & it's just easier to vacuum up a whole swarm. I've cut a hole in a sheet of plywood that slots over the rim of the Everything-Bee-Vac & then I add my box + drawn-comb frames above that & set the dial-entrance to Queen-includer mode so the workers can come & go but she can't get out. Tonight when it cools down a little [15oC = 60oF] I will pop the box on it's base & add a feeder then leave alone for ~ 5-7 days so hopefully by then she's over the shock & laying again & then they should stay. I've got 2 buckets & rarely do more than one job a day so usually no rush to get the bucket back.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  18 днів тому +1

      World Famous Mike Barry does the same thing with his Everything bee vac, lets the bees crawl up and onto the comb above it. I do like the idea and it does work because when I was using my home made Robe vac to do removals I did the exact same thing. I suppose I need to learn patience, but I just want to get the bees in the box as quickly as possible. Keep on wrangling and saving those bees. God's peace Rachel.

      @JeffHorchoff  Місяць тому

      In the past, I have brought back several "bee gums" to the abbey, link below. But I have found it best to remove the bees and set them up in a hive as they tend to live longer in a box than a tree. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch the video. There's always the chance the queen will fly, but because she is a laying queen and her abdomen is quite swollen, she can't fly very far. In a way I'm playing the odds that she won't fly, but as the saying goes, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I do love beekeeping! Nice work Mr Ed and Charlie. I hope those girls get right into building comb and making brood.
    Down here in South Australia it's just at the beginning of swarm season and I've already seen two very large swarms and one small swarm come into my small orchard. I caught the small swarm in a five frame nucleus box and one of the very large swarms in a new Top Bar Hive that I just finished building. The large swarm settled on the outside of the top bar hive and around a half of the bees just sat outside and wouldn't go in. Around two days after they landed there I did a search on the ground around it and found a queen walking around on the ground near the hive. All by herself, no attendants. I let her go on top and watched her go in, and the bees followed her in.
    I'm hoping they build out a good brood nest in there.

    Regarding the Honey Bandit… I have yet to use it but have used at least two other products which also smell like almond extract. I think one is called Fischer’s Bee Quick and the other Honey B Gone. Both seem to work about the same, and I would say pretty good but not great for moving bees from honey supers and sometimes when I do a removal and need to move the bees.
    Have you also used one or both of those, and if so would you say you see a marked difference between the effectiveness of the Honey Bandit versus the others?

    Good morning Mr. Ed from Southern Arizona. I am in the area where we are a lot of Africanized bees. They are all over Cochise County course. They’re all over the western states also but the people that I watch right now are finding that almost all of the hives are all brewed. And it is October even some of the new hives that they’re finding are full of brood and have no honey or nectar in there or pollen so I don’t know what the bees are eating to raise the babies. Anyway, these bees out here are so aggressive that they’re killing animals and attacking people and putting them in the hospital, so these are bees that they are exterminating in the wild..

    • @WillyPete_
      @WillyPete_ Місяць тому +1

      I run just over 10 feral hives in Texas, One day to the next the bees can be mean or horrible, a good strong colony can produce a lot of honey. Each colony is different in many ways, which is valuable to the learning curve of the beekeeper for when Hybrid queens are purchased.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Місяць тому

      I am finding the same thing here as well, lots of brood and little stores of honey, at least in the removals I'm doing, our hives have lots of stores and brood. I understand why Africanized bees are exterminated, but I'm glad we do not have the Africanized bees here as I do not have any of the aggression issues of them. Still, they are bees, and as such, they pollinate, produce a lot of honey, and make a lot of brood as well. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. • @JeffHorchoff

      It is always a scout bee from the swarm, but because there are lots of scouts looking at the same time, they come back to the swarm to tell of the location, and then the hive determines, out of all the possibilities, which site will best suit the needs of the swarm. After that decision is reached, the swarm moves to that location. Bees are just so cool! How are the bees that went into the vacuum cleaner? I hope to suck your wasn't so strong as it killed them

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Місяць тому +1

      Not to worry about the bees in the vacuum, it is a specially designed vac with very low suction, so it does not harm bees. If you watch the entire video you can see for yourself where I released the bees into a bee hive and caught the queen which I also vacuumed.I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 14 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Dorcas.

      No where close, but there are a lot of beekeepers in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina that were not so fortunate, pray for them and everyone else effected by the hurricanes. God's peace Heather.

    So here come my questions lol. What are robber bees? Are they male bees who have already been kicked out of their colony? Or are they female bees that don't have a colony? What about the bees that didn't get vacuumed? Do they find another colony or do you go back and try to get those vacuumed up too?

    • @WillyPete_
      @WillyPete_ Місяць тому

      Robber bees... are just bees with the job of Foraging for food, and if they find a weak colony, they will come in force and invade the hive and rob the honey. last year after we harvested boxes of honey, the boxes were placed in a shed where we work the honey and the shed door did not latch closed by (big) mistake, in no time local foraging bees found our boxes and showed up in force to take (rob) the honey, Had i not seen the cloud of bees doing their dirty deed, within an hour or so, all of the honey would be gone. Straggler Bees, left behind,, I go back at night to collect them, they will ball up somewhere near the former hive. During a day time bee removal here in Texas,, more robber bees are in the air at the end of the removal than bees from the hive being removed... the next day local foraging bees will show up at the crack of dawn and begin cleaning up every last drop of honey to be found, nothing is wet with honey and sticky when they are done.

      @JeffHorchoff  Місяць тому +1

      A robber bees is a bee that belongs to another colony that steals honey from a hive that is not their own. Every worker bee, not a drone or queen, has the potential to become a robber bee, all that has to occur is the right circumstance to happen, that is an unguarded honey source. When bees are left behind from a removal, generally, they will find another hive to bee come a member of. Bees are very social. Thanks for asking and for watching. God's peace Dawn.

      @JeffHorchoff thank you for answering that. I wasn't sure about the other bees because I know I have seen other bee keepers when introducing a new queen have spoken about putting the queen in the hive while still in her box so that the colony will get used to her scent and her pheromones so they won't kill her. I didn't know if that was an issue with nurse and field bees too. Hope you, Mona and Good Time Charlie are we. Give the monks my good wishes.

      In all the years I have been vacuuming bees, only once did I find a dead queen in the bee vac, and in fact, she was the only dead bee in there. Now that's bad luck. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
