FN 509 Tactical Unlock Block Pin removal and installation for Apex Trigger installation

- I wanted to install an Apex trigger in my FN 509 Tactical. I watched all the videos on the Apex website and decided to do it my self. The biggest issue as far as I could see was the removal of the unlock block pin. I would have liked to have been able to use on of their fixtures but they were out of stock for 3 weeks and I didn't want to wait. I made a video of removing all the pins and reinstalling the unlock block pin. The first pin removed in my video is the unlock block pin and it was the most difficult to remove and to re install.
I did not video the actual trigger removal and installation, there are some good ones out there already especially on the Apex website.
I am not a gunsmith and that will be obvious as you watch. I decided to put it up so other people that are trying to decide whether to do it themselves can see what it is like from a layman's point of view.
One thing to point out if you have already watched all the Apex videos: their videos are zoomed in on the trigger parts and it makes those parts look a lot bigger than they actually are. The actual process of swapping our the trigger parts was fairly tedious but still doable.
Driving out the unlock block pin took quite a bit of force and was a bit nerve wracking considering how much this pistol cost and how much it would cost to repair if I damaged the frame.
In the end it was worth it. I got it done and the new trigger was a huge improvement. Well worth the cost and effort.
I felt the same way. I did have the help of the apex jig, but I imagined having to use a Sledgehammer, and sweating bullets. Actually in reality, it was super easy for me also
Great video thanks really helped me!
Nice
Well I’m happy yours came out so well!! Sadly mine will not budge. No matter what I do. I suppose this guns 1500 rounds has really heat welded them 🤬🤷🏻♂️
Sorry to hear you were not able to get the pin out. It took a couple pretty good licks to get mine moving and there is a limit to how hard I would have been willing to hammer it. Damaging the frame beyond repair would be a major bummer to say the least.
@@MadDogATCZERO I appreciate that sir, it appears some folk have good luck, some have to send them to a gunsmith. I suppose I’ll send it to a smarter man than I hah.
I couldn’t get mine with the fixture out either it’s fucked
You should also install the spring kit for the slide and rear block. Apex has an outstanding video on that.
Thanks for the tip, I will check it out.
Still don't know how you replaced it
i can't get the f'ing thing back in. i was thinking about putting a little oil in the hole. not sure what to do
It’s been a while since I did this but if I remember correctly the pin comes out in one direction and has to go back the same way. The pin may be tapered. The video on the Apex website explains that.
@@MadDogATCZERO yeah well i first screwed up by putting it back in the wrong direction. I don't think i did any damage after examination. Then I after I removed that, I put it back in from right to left. Looks like how you did it there. If this pin is tapered I'm screwed. I didn't see them mention that in the video...
@@brelaxed13 I just watched the Apex video again and they didn’t say it was tapered, just that it had to be installed in a certain direction.
Sitrep: I called apex and they suggested I use a 1/4 punch to better direct the forces into the pin. I used the base of the apex jig but turned thr gun around the opposite way and just used the base of it to spread the load out around the frame. Low and behold, it worked. Couldn't believe it. I struggled with this for an hour last night when I was just attempting to use the mallet head to drive the pin. Success lol
@@brelaxed13 Glad you got it figured out. I know one of the hardest parts of it for me was worrying about screwing something up. Well worth it in the end. The apex trigger is a huge improvement imo.
Tried this. Tried the jig. Frame still cracked. FML.
Damn, sure sorry to hear that. I wonder if there is any solution?
Yea, Probably wouldn't title this trigger install when you never showed an install!!!!!! This should have been titled how to remove and reinstall the trigger pins!!!! Just Sayin!!!
You are correct and I just changed the title. I wish I had thought about that when I uploaded this. Thanks for pointing that out.
This whole video is removing pins and reinstalling. Literally the easiest part. How does this explain anything
When I was researching buying and replacing the trigger in my 509T the biggest issue I kept seeing was that it was very difficult to remove the unlock block pin and that there were reports of people actually breaking frames. The thought of ruining my brand new and expensive pistol was a bit disconcerting. I only found one video back then and it was a demonstration by an APEX gunsmith doing it. I just made this video to show what it was like for a non gunsmith driving out that pin. So yes, this video is really only about driving out the unlock block pin. The rest of the replacement is pretty straightforward and there are some good videos on the APEX website. Just by watching this it is pretty obvious that I am not a gunsmith or a videographer, just wanted to possibly help other people.
@@MadDogATCZERO that makes sense. Sorry to sound critical, I didnt realize that was the most difficult part. I should have researched before commenting.
@@conradmccall5820 No problem, thanks for watching!
