Nicolai Gogol is actually mostly famous for writing creepy stories about Ukrainian folklore, “the nose” definitely isn’t the biggest thing he wrote and I’m surprised to hear that it’s the most popular one outside of Russia. Where I grew up his most popular story has to be a Christmas story called “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka”, which is actually a pretty wholesome and fun story. But despite his scary stories in real life the author was actually a pretty sweet dude. A tad weird, but sweet

Nikolai Gogol is one of the most popular and "greatest" russian authors (although he was born in Ukraine). I would recommend his work "Dead Souls" it's pretty funny. Ability of BSD Gogol is called "Overcoat" (it's the name of one of the short stories of Gogol. It's good trust me). "The Government Inspector" is also pretty funny, but unlike "Dead Souls" it is comedy.
About his life and personality... Well, he was gay as hell. Probably. Professionals still argue about his orientation lol. But the facts are: he was never married, he preferred men's company and his letters to men were more affectionate and emotional (I will be honest with you, every classical russian literature author was gay).
He was a prankster. He could hide from the person who came to visit him, or sit in the same room with a friend and pretend not to know him. One day Gogol returned to Moscow from abroad, but for two more months he wrote to his mother that he was in a foreign land. He had a good relationship with her btw.
Why did I wrote all of this? Idk. I was just reaaaaaally surprised that Danny found nothing on him. And because I love BSD Gogol.
Edit: I added some more facts under this comment

Ah yes. He burned the second volume of Dead Souls because he didn't like it. So dramatic lmao. OH. ALSO ALSO ALSO. How could I forget. He had a fear of being buried alive. He was prone to fainting and somnambulistic states so he was afraid that people would take him for dead while he was unconscious. Btw there is a legend that Gogol was in fact buried alive but there is no evidence of this. Except for some questionable rumors. Like "when they opened his coffin he lay face down" or "when they opened his coffin there were scratch marks on the lid"

From what I’ve heard he was actually manipulated into st*rving himself to d3ath by a priest, whom he happened to be in love with. Like, literally the priest convinced him that he could stop being gay (and, in their eyes at the time, stop being a “sinner”) by not eating basically until you’re no longer gay, however as (obviously) it doesn’t work like that he st*rved to d3ath.

I’ve never read any of Gogol’s books, but i do have a little fun fact about him and Dostoevsky: Fyodor really admired Nikolai’s writings, and actually ended up reading a letter addressed to Gogol and that led to his arrest (along with some other things) and he was sentenced to death, although he was pardoned on the day of his execution. 12:30 His power is mostly based on short story "Overcoat". When it comes to "Nose" I can clearly see some connections between the way author writes, his ideas, self-monolouges etc. and BSD character. I belive he was most likely to be a crazy man out of this world, who, as a satire writer is fun and all, but actually talks about deep stuff and judges the environment around him. It is mostly seen in "Overcoat" and "Dead Souls" how using humor he reveals major problems of Russia during the times he lived

nikolai gogol's ability is named after the real life counterpart's short story "the overcoat", which i think has barely anything to do with the bsd character other than the literal thing for his ability (transportation). but yeah, also gogol's written to have a pretty interesting philosophy in bsd, probably one of the more convoluted ones besides dazai's take on life as a concept and fyodor's personality. i'm sort of blanking on how detailed he describes it to atsushi in the tunnels, but it does get elaborated on more in the manga later (probably in s5)
so glad to see your reaction to sunday tragedy. even having read the manga, watching the anime my jaw was dropping at how visceral it was animated. even during the perfect crime arc, the noise that the body made against the ground already made me pause the episode like "what the hell was that".
i'm also glad you thought the perfect crime was a somewhat decent mystery. i think it's one of ranpo's best moments and shows how much he'd do for the detective agency while introducing mushitarou as an emotionally complex individual.

    @DGHeina Рік тому +146

Great video! I'm glad you're liking this season so much, because I sure did. On the this one's and the real-life Gogol's correlations:
Gogol's eccentric nature likely stems from the real Nikolai Gogol's reputation as a dramatist and satirist. His brutal method of murder also most likely stems from the author's combination of realistic and grotesque elements.
His ability comes from his short story "The Overcoat", about which the author Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé (often misattributed to Fyodor Dostoevsky) once said, "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'."
    - from the fandom wiki page.
The combination of realistic and grotesque elements that's talked about above can be found in The Nose, which you mentioned. The tale is a narrative of grotesque and bizarre incidents against a background often painted with minute and objective realism. Another piece that I think might've influenced this iteration of Gogol is "The Diary of a Madman", a faintly sketched work about a minor civil official who is frustrated over a love and becomes possessed by delusions of grandeur. Using the visions of a madman, Gogol shows the senselessness of striving and the vanity of the world.

Nikolai Gogol's ability is actually tied to his short story "The Overcoat", but the way it works in the anime is actually based on Fyodor Dotoievski's opinion on Gogol's work, quote on quote: "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'" (to be taken literally in the anime adaptation of the writer). Dostoievski admired Gogol and by saying that he meant that the existence of Modern Russian Literature, its themes and tone, it all comes from the works of Gogol and that, without him, literature in Russia wouldn't be the same as it is today in terms of quality and uniqueness.

Nikolai Gogol also wrote “The Overcoat" (sometimes translated as "The Cloak").
A short story published in 1842. The story has had a great influence on Russian literature.
Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé said: "We all came out from under Gogol's Overcoat" (a quote often misattributed to Dostoevsky).
Writing in 1941, Vladimir Nabokov described "The Overcoat" as "The greatest Russian short story ever written".
I think it was also the story they used for his ability in this anime.

Most yt channels wouldn't go to the trouble of understanding the literary significance of this show and ppl like that would never be able to get its true charm. Im glad that you not only are knowledgeable enough but also put thought into the literary aspects of the story, even researching/reading up on authors and works you don't know yet. Bsd got me into Japanese literature so this is the most enjoyable aspect of the show for me.

I'd still argue it's not enough. This dude literally read the whole of No Longer Human and says Ranpo is a deeper character than Dazai. Like, nothing against Ranpo, just the actual hell? I know I'm speaking from a slightly different perspective since I've read all of the light novels, but he did watch the Dark Era, did he? Then how can he be so wrong about Dazai? Regardless.
I'm still kind of upset at this even though I know I can fully destroy his argument and back it up with lots of evidence, but... I'm just mostly disappointed in just how much this style of watching the show takes away from themes, time for reflection or analysis. I don't want to come off as a gatekeeper or anything, just once again it pains me to see an underrated brilliant show be so misunderstood. And he's so confident too, it's just so... genuinely distressing

@@phrinus it's not exactly his fault yk. U just said, that you've read the light novels. Look at the horrible quality of the anime adaptation, anyone who just watched the anime would not be able to appreciate the story properly. Even I didn't care much abut bsd until I at least read the manga! And really, the anime takes away so much from Dazai's character that he really does seem reduced to nothing but your regular "hot, mysterious guy" (spoiler) in the prison arc this season, they reused like 3 frames of Dazai's face throughout every goddamn conversation he had with Fyodor, no change in expression, nothing! U want ppl to understanda character's depth from this?

    • @phrinus
      @phrinus Рік тому

@@suchetabiswas2564 Well, like I said. He DID read NLH, right? He should have at least understood something from Dead Apple. (Dead apple is actually pretty much the same as a light novel, because the original story was presented in a movie format)
Other than that argument, which you seem to have completely disregarded... Yes, yes, I do have high standards for people who are confident enough to be on youtube and share their opinions with the world.
Additionally, as good as the light novels are, I really don't see how the anime "takes so much away from Dazai", since, once again the Dark Era is overall a pretty decent adaptation that describes a very important aspect of his past which should have, at least, given Danny a clue as to how many damn layers he possesses.
Speaking from experience, because I did catch all that, I did have a pretty good grasp on what Dazai was the moment I saw him, because I PAYED ATTENTION.
I also genuinely don't understand how the anime is so much worse? Like, yeah, I know a big part of the enjoyment for me is the animation itself and the brilliantly composed music, but I really don't think other parts were particularly lacking. Don't people know how to read subtext? Or is this show "bad" because it requires a certain level of analysis to truly enjoy?

Concerning Nikolai Gogol, idk why "The Nose" came up as his most popular work when "Viy", "Dead Souls", "The Overcoat" or "The Government Inspector" would be much more obvious suggestions.
Nikolai was the main inspiration behind the Natural School literary movement, the main idea of which was that literature should mirror reality, truthfully illustrating the flaws of the society. Gogol's writing style is mostly satiric and comedic, he created stories which could easily happen in real life. Although he mainly wrote in the realism style, he also showed great fondness for the supernatural, many of his works containing elements of ukranian folklore.
The man himself was also interesting. He was very reserved and kind. He was a perfectionist. When his literary debut was met with harsh criticism, he bought the entire stock of the book and burned it. There's also a lot of mysticism surrounding his persona(especially his death) due to the supernatural things he wrote about.
So yeah, I think this kind of character fits the real Gogol's writing, starting with his inventive and humorous language, and ending with how he noticed fatal flaws in the world which noone else seemed to care about.
Whew, that was a lot... Please note that all this info is based on what I learnt at school and the scraps of research I could do back then. If anyone wants to add something or point out a mistake, please do!

"Evenings on a Farm..." is a Christmas story about falling in love, making a deal with a devil (not The, but just a little ordinary devil). And trying to trick that devil to get a happy ending.

Real life Nikolai (or Mykolai Hohol) maybe wasn't into torture as his character is, but there is a conection between them in their absurdism.
Maybe the anime doesn't show off his philosophy in detail but I was honestly happy with how people potray his character and how many decided to read some of his works because of him. I love his motivation of "true freedom" and the plot line of him trying to get rid of Dostoy just so he can get rid of his feelings is suprisingly fitting with Mykolai.
And if someone is reading this little rant and is actually already a fan of Mykolai and is really intrested in the author then I recommend the book ,,The sexual labyrinth of Nikolai gogol" (it looks into his mental state and his queerness)

A Russian philology student is here to say that the real Gogol, though he did have the aura of an mysterious creepy man, was actually the most SHY antisocial deppressed pathetic human being you could ever meet (I love him with all my heart)
    - He was always wrapping himself in a scarf to look like a granny.
    - He was constantly missing lectures at university because he was too shy to show his face, except he was a TEACHER.
    - HE OFTEN PRETENDED TO BE ASLEEP TO AVOID SOCIAL CONTACT (I mean, really, this whole idea of him being “creepy” comes from just how antisocial he was)
    - He specifically asked artists to paint his portraits incorrectly purely for the sake of humor
    - One day he saw ONE relatively negative article on his work and IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT THE ENTIRE PRINT RUN AND BURNED IT IN A FIELD

  • @lizazenzel5488

Gogol is actually a great author!
His biggest novel is called “The dead souls“ which has nothing to do with mystery and ghosts actually((( it’s just the Picaresque novel about the serfdom in Imperial Russia ://
«the Nose» is really cool too, but i wouldn’t call it his best work, although i like the absurd in it. For the most part it’s satire on the society of St. Putersburg and officials.
He also has a lot of good mystical stories such as «Viy» (really scary shit) or the whole collection of a short stories: “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka“ based on an Ukrainian folklore.
The character’s ability is named after one of his most famous stories: “The overcoat“
A great example of a “little man“ character in Russian classics, and stunningly described realities of minor officials lives in St. Petersburg in 19 century (with a little bit of mystery)
The plot: a guy really wanted to buy an overcoat.
Maybe characters madness is based on a real part of Nikolay Gogol’s biography. By the end of his life he had gone mad and burned the second part of “the dead souls“ (it was supposed to be a trilogy)
But still, he’s a really talented and great writer, with a recognisable style. It’s also kinda funny, that in BSD Gogol considers Dostoevsky his best friend who has had a great influence on him, but in reality it was Gogol who had a big influence on Dostoevsky (he lived earlier) oh and on Akutagawa too!
So, I really recommend you to read some of his small stories:) they’re fun, sometimes weird and scary, but still really awesome!
i've just remembered, that real Nikolay Gogol used to work as an official (he really hated it) and here he was playing the role of an official for the whole year! (kinda cool detail)
btw i really like your reactions!!!!

So, apparently Gogol was one of the first to use the style of "grotesque" in his writing, which was a style of writing that was so bizarre and possibly ugly that it invoked a sense of discomfort and unease in the audience. His writings also famously had proto-surrealist qualities, and his later work satirised political corruption in contemporary Russia, standing out amongst the other satires for its sophisticated yet unconventional nature.
