RS7 Spark Plugs in a Golf R and Unplugging The Rear O2 Sensor!

  • I'll let you watch my install of Audi RS7 spark plugs into my 2019 Golf R MK7.5, and of course I'll tell you why. Then I'm unplugging my rear O2 sensor as recommended by Equilibrium Tuning for cars with a Stage 2 or greater tune and an aftermarket downpipe (which you probably have if you are running stage 2 :) If you are running a COBB tune or a tune based of the COBB Accessport in a MQB car, you might want to check out the recommendation to do the same.

I recently unplugged my rear O2 sensor after having some problems. I wasn’t having issues untill I had my motor built and retuned. It started throwing rich and lean codes with a CEL after every few hundred miles and would start misfiring, but would go back to normal when I cleared the codes. Took it back and my tuner and unplugged my rear O2 sensor. I reflashed my tune, so hope it’s all good now. My R is protuned using Cobb software and running a catless downpipe. I saw your video a few months ago and didn’t think it applied to me haha. Should have done it then though

Great stuff! I just installed the EQT Stage 2 map on my 2019 R. I've ordered the plugs and have the following mods AMS Intercooler / AMS TMD / APR Turbo Inlet / Cobb Intake / AMS Catted Downpipe. When I first drove it I was concerned something was wrong....it went from this sedate 4 cylinder to a little hissing beast! :) Love this car! Ok enough of that.....based on your feedback I need to unplug the O2 Sensor? Thanks again for all the informative videos and info!

Heard those RS7 spark plugs like to grenade themselves into the motor and turbo , be careful and use non projected

You’ll have a code when you unplug it, but no check engine light. Just ignore the o2 sensor code when you scan.

My understanding is that running rich = less potential damage but less power, running lean = more potential damage and knock but more power, so because I want my GTI to last longer and still be stage 2 EQT, Should I keep the O2 sensor plugged in or unplug it? I'd rather run richer to be on the safe side, unless my understanding is incorrect.

This question might be kind of silly but I have a CEL for cat inefficiency bank 2. My solution is to put an o2 spacer in that has a minicat on the end of it. If I just unplugged my rear o2 will i see the same CEL for that? Did you get the same CEL?

@@ss10million That's quite unfortunate to hear, but not surprising I suppose. It seems everywhere is afraid to mention anything regarding emissions related components these days, yet alone do anything with them physically or tune wise. It really is a shame they can't address and properly fix this issue to avoid such a hacky workaround.

Rs7 plugs in general are known to drop the electrode and destroy engine they are shitty plugs never run them instead use NGK r7438-8 or r7438-9

How comfortable do you feel running the RS7 plugs in the meantime? I was originally going to use the NGK 91006 but considering I never stage 2 yet, I decided to buy the Denso 5749s and going to use those ones. Just kind of sucks that the 91006s I bought are useless but small price to pay if they were to break I suppose... I believe EQT also mentions that the race plugs do not need to be gapped and could stay at 0.028 instead of the recommended 0.024.
