In three years, I went from having absolutely no experience in 3D Animation to working at DreamWorks Animation Studios teaching just about all of the 3D software used to make movies! After 2 years there, I left to try freelance / independent content creation on UA-cam for awhile, before I head back to Feature Film!
This is my journey- the entire process from when I decided I wanted to be an animator until I eventually get there, and everything along the way that will make it possible.
Whether you're chasing a similar dream, or just interested to see where mine takes me, subscribe to follow along with the incredible journey that it takes to become an animator!
You will not be disappointed.

I was at CTN at this panel and never got to talk to you after. Wanted to say thank you for monitoring the panel, and I really liked ur shirt.
Just discovered your channel yesterday and the content you provide i so cool for animation student thank you so much and keep going !
Hey thanks for uploading this. it was nice meeting you at ctn expo. I was the guy that asked you if you were gonna upload this video to youtube. It was my fist time going to that event.
Thanks for sharing, Sir Wade. It was also a pleasure meeting you at CTN.
This is awesome, I had to miss this when I was CTN but I heard great things from some friends who went. Thanks so much for uploading
Very valuable advice and very inspirational to listen to. Thank you for such a wonderful video!
a lot of good info here; applicable to most if not all professional industries
Thanks for the upload, learned a lot. The "On Air" signs a cool touch btw.
Know your ishhh :D I'm working on my own Animation Studio out here on UA-cam. Self made, no schooling, but yeah learning from the entire animation community out here. Oh and loving the process of creating my own Studio from scratch. As my sucking at 3D animation has humbled me a great deal over the years. I truly think sucking really bad at something shall become the drive a person needs to make them become far better than anyone ever thought they could become long term.
Super informative, Thanks!
Hey Sir Wade!
Thanks a lot for all your effort! Wish I could have been there, very insightful!
You are awesome!
this is awesome i feel like allot of this advice is helpful for so many fields not just animation!

Hey Sir Wade, it was great seeing you at CTN and thank you for rocking this panel. It was definitely one of my favorites of the show!
Thanks for sharing this an hosting it! And what a great host you are, asking all the good questions!
Thanks for sharing that Sir Wade! That is the kind of content that can really help prepare us junior animators. Finding a first job can be a cumbersome task. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Wade! This was really insightful and a huge help.
31:45 is so so important.
Oh cool, thank you Sir Wade to share this!!!
Nice panel, some really good advice in there.
Awesome vid as always Sirwade. Great edvice from great people 👍🏼
Thank you for this gem 💓
9:48 THANK YOU!
Thank you Sir wade for what you do ! Very helpful !
Curious to know, how parents or people with 30+ handle their careers in animation. But thats maybe a wrong topic for this video. :)
Hey thanks for bringing this panel to #CTNX2019. Really great topic. 👍👍👍
That was really insightful! Thanks👍
Hi, thanks for great video! What is your opinion. When some one before working in animation, worked some years in graphic design. Do recruiters or studios care about that or is it just the one thing you apply for?
For a graduating art student that probably doesn’t have a ton of work to share in their reel, would a recruiter or hiring staff prefer shots with animations with a scene or background or should the character(s) be isolated?
Idk what to say
Thank you very much for the interview
Shawn is the only guy here I would love to work for/with. (Not including SIr Wade, he is a cool dude anyways) but the other 3, I'll give those a miss.
Many thanks for sharing that :)
big help thanks
Thank you Sir Wade! Could you do a lip sync tutorial?
Yay.
congrats on 100k 🍬🍬🍬🍬
14:25 take this advice with a grain of salt, I asked this question a few times during various interviews and it's never well received. You've either got the right stuff or you don't, just shove your greatness down their throats. 40:30 pretty much says it all. I don't think I'd like to work for these people lol.
You all are so young I'm 23 I know animation takes 20 years to learn I will be 43 before getting a job In animation man need to start getting fit so can live a long career
Life drawing will take 7 years to learn to a desired standard and propotion and placement 13 years I dont even think 20 years is enough time
I'm really curious how that will work out with 2 kids and my wife working full time. I don't think studios will appreciate if I had to stay home because my kids are sick or they have no school that day. So I'm being bold here and say that young students are definitely more advantaged than old dinosaur like me...
What to do if you want to animate characters but don’t want to animate in Maya :-)
Do you prefer 15.6 or 17.3 laptop screens?
I just recently got rejected by ilm :D
sad that it took til 2020 to get hard answers like this
Initially I was a lil appalled to constantly hear “Be a kind person” “You wanna be on your p’s and Q’s” “you wanna make sure to listen and listen” but I’m not seeing anyone being given a reason as to why they should work with any of these companies like you also have to be a leader someone can work with because the way I hear the directors get Lee way for being kind of rude and covering it up as “Honest” is kind of a red flag. But overall as always I loved this and enjoyed the pointers given here.
