Thank you for this video. So many sailing videos just show dolphins and sunsets. I am very interested in the sailing of the boat. I will be watching your spin take down video next. Occasionally point the camera at the sails since that is what I look at some of the time when I am sailing. Good luck on the Vendee I will be following. Don’t worry about making the video too technical, some of us would love it.
Thanks for putting that together. Would love to see a boat tour with some discussion of foil settings, sail settings, how you address the spinnaker hoisting question (from the mast or cockpit) as you come to each bit. Cheers!
Mark off your jib sheets with an indelible marker when correctly trimmed for your optimum wind angle. Sheet your jib across first to the optimum new trim, sheet the ays to the new angle, again sheets marked off at optimum trim angle on new tack, gybe the main put the new b stay on and unhook the pilot then steer and trim to build b speed. Simple enough
Always inside. The spinnaker is pretty small you can rotate it fast enough that it’s not a problem. On bigger boats, Volvo or IMOCA, we still gybe inside until 15knots
Ray Miller Hi Ray. We don’t adjust them from side to side as the windward one is mainly out of the water. Foils are adjusted as necessary for upwind or downwind mode and in relation to boat speed
Hi Keith, thanks for sharing. I could not figure out when you release the backstay. Do you let the main come into it and release after tensioning the new backstay or is the mast strong enough to release it before the gibe?
Hi Major. I have found the autopilot to be the most reliable way to manage the direction during the maneuver. You can do a slightly faster gybe knee steering but you're more likely to make a mistake
@@colmanoceanracing Thanks Conrad. That's what I imagined as I'm used to gybing my J/109 pushing +10, +10, +10 on the Ray remote while frantically hauling in the sheets.
@@majorlockwood1184 if you don't normally use the auto-tack function on your auto, you can set the "tacking" angle to less than 90 - say 70 or 65. from the auto's perspective a gybe is just a tack in the other direction, and you can easily keep up with the trimming as you go. I find it helps keep the boat from oversteering on the new gybe. I can do this pretty effectively in up to around 20 knots on my columbia 32, it should be very stable on your J109.
Headfirst! As you say, this doesn’t exist outside of France. So, as a kiwi/ American, I left my normal life and moved to France, learned French and the French style of solo sailing. 3x round the world races and several solo transats and I’m starting to get the hang of it! What kind of sailing do you do? If you have more questions don’t hesitate
@@colmanoceanracing Hello! Big fan of the series here! Do you have any experience with the Figaro 2? I'm a collegiate sailor and my school just got one for the program. I was wondering if you know of any tips or tricks for that boat in particular or for singlehanding with a symmetrical kite in general? Thanks!

Perfect video to show true sailing and let us participate! Thank you! 👍 👏
Wow! Sailing 101 from a VG skipper! How cool is that? No suggestions, though. But I'll happily watch all your vids. Keep em coming!
Oujeah, superb instructions to all assy-sailors! Thanks.
Really awesome, thanks for posting.
Excellent footage. Thanks for sharing. Please have more coming!

Good idea. I'll get on it
Looks good, I would be interested to see the hoist and drop if and when you can do a video.
Hi Chris. I just posted a video showing the spi drop. Hope you like it ua-cam.com/video/T3bUtq4upHA/v-deo.html
Conrad Colman do you rehoist from the companionway bag that you use for the spi drop?
Good job, congrats !

Then time yourself from optimum b speed to optimum b speed. Practice until your happy with the gybe times
Brian O'Neill Yup. Sounds about right!
Thank you for the explanatory captions; at what point do you unload the current active backstay during the maneuver?
amazing!
Love it. Do you always gybe the kite inside itself, or sometimes outside?
Always inside. The spinnaker is pretty small you can rotate it fast enough that it’s not a problem. On bigger boats, Volvo or IMOCA, we still gybe inside until 15knots
Any videos on how you drop your kite?
rayred74 hi Ray. Yes, got one here ua-cam.com/video/T3bUtq4upHA/v-deo.html
Always great to see how people handle it single handed. Do you only have to adjust the foils on a tack?

I am also curious about that!
Hi Conrad, Are you on autopilot during the gybe, or leg steering the tiller? Many thanks for sharing thes videos.

To make it more interesting there needs to be more wind and it should be dark :)
Thank you for the insight. Do you always have to go forward to sort the new sheet?
Only when the jib is up as it gets caught underneath the belly of the eased sail. I should try a hook on the forestay to catch it
@@colmanoceanracing Awesome! Could you stitch a wee webbing tab on the jib luff and attach a bungee to the pulpit to keep it clear?
ronny205 good idea
@@colmanoceanracing Sometimes I like to winflap the the jib luff then replace the bungee with a postlopper and just throw it right out there.
"Ah Shit" lol
Nice, I’m really interested to know how you got into this. As its a European thing’.

Why do you keep the jib up downwind?
You go faster!
I see the sky in chemical trails.

Sorry, Conrad..
