I was standing on a balcony while this song started playing in the living room. Rain and thunder were unexpected since it was a really hot sunny day... I was watching the trees, and plants on balconies across the street, and as I looked from plant to plant I felt like I know them. Like I’ve seen an old friend or acquaintance. Trees were slowly moving on a wind like they were alive and every now and then I could see a thunderstruck. It was perfect. I never felt more life inside of me/us and more in sync with nature.
To the amateur, it is merely a piece of art. The ending makes it a wonderful masterpiece. Without the quick divert after from that Adrenaline shock when the music starts to accelerate rapidly into that calm position at the end. Without that tension. I'd guess there would be a big emotional gap. Think of it as if you haven't reached the end of a story. You are eager to find out what's going to happen. This is why Yann's music such as this never gets old. Hence why you like the music generally.
the composition of the instruments together are so beautiful, reminds me of the flight of a bird or an adventure to a distant land... so many different parts to one song, oh Yann Tiersen, marry me!!
"Goodbye Lenin" is my favourite film of all time mostly cuz it made me hear Yann for the first time in my life, Summer of 78! I really recommend that you watch this movie and listen to the soundtrack, I´ve accually cried to that movie realising how good it is and how amazing Yann is! I really hope you will and that you will find Yann´s work the best there is cuz I do :D
I discovered him from le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, then i watched the two other movies which the original soundtrack is produced by him : goodbye lenin and tabarly. I'm profoundly convinced that i loved thoses movies, 80% because of their soundtracks ! And i can say that le fabuleux destin d'amélie is myalltime best film, and it returns to the amazing Yann
This kind of reminds me of The Butterfly Circus, that scene when they appear through fields in a small poor camp, to give the children a surprise. Now I'm tearing up, I both love that short movie and this amazing song.
I love this music coz there are two moves, the first one is built as a tango and then it turns into a waltz, then it goes back again to a crazy tango.....and I don't know why it also makes me think of summer......like being in the shades of some trees while it's very sunny and hot and I'd be watching dancers making their moves on a square....I know it's weird....
I actually felt the ending before it came, because the joy in the song felt so fake. That's exactly what Tiersen did there - I think he tried to manifest the joy of the clown - the fake and scary joy and craziness which masks all the misfortunes in the world. This song sounds to me as a sad clown.
I know your comment is old by now, but I wanted to thank you for drawing out that dimension of the music, I can se what you mean, the music has a cirque feeling to it and I can feel the false facade of keeping up appearances, of putting on a mask or a fake smile.
This melody is all about the 'the day before'. Which was the day before a great coal mining disaster in the Pas de Calais area in the early 1900's. A disaster which killed many people in their beds. Women , children , miners ,passers by across many small villages. All poor people scratching a living in the coal fields managed by penny pinching coal owners who would not install Davy lamps.
Some of my personal favourites are: Comptine d´un autre été, l´apres-midi J´y suis jamais allé La valse d`Amélie(there is alot of good versions of this son, like piano, original or orchestre) La noyée L´autre valse d´Amélie A Quai C´était Ici La Corde Le Jour D´avant Le moulin There are so many that I´ve not mentioned that you have to find on your on and you will! :D My clear favourite is "Summer 78" which reffers to the movie "Goodbye Lenin"(German movie)! I´ve so many feelings for this movie!
I wish i had someone to share Yann's music with..

You don't make this kind of beauty without great suffering and joy. God Bless

How can five people possibly dislike this video unless their ears are broken. This song cheers me up no matter what is on my mind. js

Yann, the master of melancholy!
Les Têtes Raides ne sont pas loin. Un petit air de famille. Merci.
To me, one of the best composers. I admire him ever since I saw Amelie. Emotionally powerful music.
Musica hermosa, armoniosa, compleja, musica bien hecha. El final me dejo atonito! Grande Yann
