    Hi Art Friends!! YES... I spelled "Backlighting" wrong in my initial intro of this video... LOL. I can't really change it after the video has uploaded. I also had the reference image visible in the video when I created it and I don't know why it disappeared. If you would like to see the ref image while I paint, please click here: (credit pmp-art.com) pmp-art.com/thomas-habermann/gallery/261937/beech-tree

    Enjoyed every minute of it...
    This type of lighting is my most favorite of all. Probably, like most people, when you think about it, we're in the shade 80% of the time looking out to the light.
    My morning hour's are spent looking at all the blue gray reflection from above. Then, in the the evening I enjoy the warmer reflection in shadow. 💜

    Hullo Susan, I have seen so many people use that eggplant color from Terry Ludwig that I wondered if there was a more accessible option? Well Schmincke pastels are available worldwide. and I would suggest 048B quinacridone violet or 050D purple 2 these are very dark and Schmincke are butter soft in most colors! Be sure you look at the letter as that shows the concentration of pigment in the Schmincke line of pastels. I know there are some similar colors in the Sennelier line of pastels but I do not have those colors to refer to.
    Thanks for continuing to show wonderful videos here on UA-cam. I have to thank those who can support you over on Patreon too! Thanks!

    I haven't painted with oil pastels yet, and would like to know how you dry a pastel painting and make it last longest.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  11 місяців тому

      Hi @ushadivakaran5919, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image.
      To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ua-cam.com/video/4XD4SezFyBg/v-deo.html&t=209s

    Im sure I’ve asked this before but do you do portraits as well? I know you lean heavily on landscaping work but I’d love to see a portrait done using pastels. Also do you ever use paint? A mixture of paint and pastels might be interesting.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 роки тому

      Hi Ronnie, I actually love portrait work. I have a few videos on my channel where I do some basic portrait painting, but I find that my landscape pieces get more views. I’ll have to create some more portrait lessons. also, I love mixing different mediums with pastels. I often lay down watercolor, or acrylic, or even a light wash of oil paint prior to painting with pastels. I also have many videos on my channel sharing mixed media work. Thanks for your comment friend.

    Your paintings are so beautiful. I only have a set of basic soft pastels. I find them so messy that I get discouraged. I have used alcohol which helped. As I live in a Senior residence, I don't want to use a spray fixative. For the last 2 paintings that I tried, I placed a wet teatowel underneath which helped. Are pastels toxic?

    • @mariannepaumelle3981
      @mariannepaumelle3981 2 роки тому +1

      Just pay attention to dust (in the air) wash your hand after painting and do not paint in a room where you eat (do not eat, drink or smoke while painting), cleaning with a wet towel is the best. It should be ok 🙂

      @@mariannepaumelle3981 Thank you.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 роки тому

      Yes, pastels can be a bit messy, but I've come up with some methods to keep the dust down and minimize getting pastel dust every where. I like your set tea towel technique. :) Pastels have a very low level of toxicity and I think it has to do with certain colors. Many paint mediums can have adverse effects if used incorrectly or without proper ventilation. So just be sure to keep that in mind. Some artists even wear a mask while painting. Also, painting with an upright easel will help to keep you from breathing the dust as it falls down due to gravity. Working on a flat surface can have more dust inhalation as it lays flat in front of your face. Even though I often film from a flat position, I'm going to start working upright more exclusively just for this precaution. Hope that helps sweetie.
