Learned to drive in a '59 Dodge station wagon. Loved the push button transmission and the bar graph speedometer that changed colors. Great car. The floor did get hot from the exhaust and fuel economy was bad but I still miss that car.
That's the voice of Lou Crosby, who was the announcer and commercial spokesman on Lawrence Welk's Saturday "Dodge Dancing Party" on ABC TV back in the day.
A cousin of mine had that very car, it rode like a dream! a beautiful car...very much ahead of its time, like many of the cars from the mid to late 50s.
Back in the days when a car looked distinctive for the builder, unlike today's cookie cutter designs. General Motors cars had a different look back then than their Ford competition, as with Chrysler. And Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai, who were they? All fins, chrome and power, good old Detroit iron.
I had a 1974 Monte Carlo with swivel bucket seats. Everyone thought that was something new! They'd been around for decades at that time. I hated the damned things.
The '59 Dodge was driven by many police departments. In a Highway Patrol episode, the bad guys drove Christine ('58 Plymouth), Chef Dan Mathews (Broderick Crawford) drove a Dodge.
What you are looking at is a car built with limited Govt. interference or regulation, when automakers had carte blanche to build whatever the hell they wanted. Govt. needs to get out of the auto industry, they have no business in it, the Govt. uses the excuse, they need to regulate the auto industry to ensure safety, that's BS! The Free Market takes care of safety, if you build an unsafe car, people will stop buying it, the Govt. does not need to interfere. Get the Govt. of the auto industry and you will see cars like this again.
Yes indeed, not everyone rides around in a car the size of a Ford Falcon with no style. We seem to be going backwards instead of forward on styling of cars now.

The nicest car of 1959
I also learned to drive on our '59 station wagon...would love to get my hands on a restored '59 Dodge.
This would have been the perfect car for the movie Christine, note the SCARY FACE on this Dodge!.
Four wheeled art..

i had a 58 custom royal, in 68 drove it with the speedo in the red from San Francisco to Detroit. 3 stops by police.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!!
This car and the '59 Buick look totally mean end evil (but more so of the Dodge)
The '59 Buick and all GM cars that year were heavily influenced by the 1957 ChryCo cars. GM was trying to outfin ChryCo.
This should have been "Christine." Its a mean looking car in every way. It'll have to settle for being Christine's ferocious Mopar cousin.

The front end looks like those monsters, The Langoliers.
They don't make them like they used too.

"Ottomobile" and all he needed was a lit cigarette to go with the voice.
