  • The OHM Urban is a near-silent, feature rich, urban hardtail electric bike that's available in four frame sizes and can be switched from Class 2 with throttle to high-speed Class 3. Proprietary torque sensor is integrated into the 12 mm rear-axle, it feels fluid and sporty to pedal with and less finicky than older TMM4 or bottom bracket sensors. OHM overbuilds their bikes so even though this is an urban model, it still has a tapered head tube, 15 mm thru-axle, adjustable air fork, and hollow spindle bottom bracket. The BionX D-Series hub motor is powerful and quick but visually it does stand out more than a compact gearless design, the trigger throttle only activates if the bike is moving.

    OHM is the one. My biggest concerns about going electric is motor and battery cooling. I live in southern Nevada. The proximity of Ohm to Grin Technologies is something that I'm hoping results in improvements in this area. Thanks for all you do, Court.

    I tend to favor this style of bike, the urban/city commuter for its more upright and comfortable riding position. I was not too sure about the large hub motor in the rear being so prominent, but after watching the review and visiting OHM's website for a bit more info I really like their bikes. I especially like all the details you point out in the review, like the lower step frame. incorporated lights, four piston brakes, super quiet motor, fenders and integrated rack, etc. You can tell that a lot of thought went into the design of the bike. Of course, the price reflects that.
    I think if I lived in a more urban environment or a more bike friendly area, with paths and bike only lanes I could easily see myself replacing my car and just going down to a one car household. I could then justify to myself spending $3800 posted on the OHM website. Regardless, it is a great review and great bike. Great job as always.

    I ordered this bike a couple of days ago, thanks largely to this review. I really appreciate the work you do here and on your site.
    I think comparing Ohm to Stromer is the right way to look at this bike. It has all the features that I would want from the Stromer without the features that I think drive the higher Stromer prices, but that are not really that important to me.
    I prefer the motor, instrumentation and controls of the Ohm, but I like the overall look, with the battery really hidden away, of the Stromer better. At the end of the day, its the build quality, value for money, and the Bionx D500 system that sold me on this purchase.
    I'm excited to receive this bike and I'll follow up with my first impressions once I've had a couple of days with it.

      David Helms So what are your thoughts 9 months later?

    • @davidhelms
      @davidhelms 6 років тому

      pioneer7777777 Overall I’ve been very happy with the bike. It’s very solidly built and it has withstood a lot of ride time on my daily commute. Equipped with 2 large panniers, I think of it like I’m driving an F150 pickup. I don’t necessarily need all that capacity, but it’s good to know it’s there so I can carry any load and still handle the hills here in Arlington.
      My only major complaint is that it is highly susceptible to dropping the chain when shifting to a low gear. There is something about the hub motor behavior combined with the slack in the chain as the derailleur throws to a low gear that causes it to jump out and the chain gets jammed into the space between the crank and the chain guard. It got so annoying that I finally fabricated an insert (it’s good to own a laser cutter) between the chain guard and the crank that prevents this from happening. Interestingly, if you look at the picture of the new Urban 500 model on the Ohm website, it looks like they have done something similar.

      It's an interesting day when people are like "you can put a water bottle on that bike!!" but actually have it mean something because so many electric bikes just don't have room for them... Yeah, these OHM bikes are special, the silence feels great after rationalizing the buzz on so many other models. I don't think the video does it justice in terms of torque and power, that's equally impressive, it smoothly accelerates like a sports car

    A nice built bike that looks good too. I'd love to own it but I still favor ebikes that are more stealthy the bionic motor is too obvious. But good design nonetheless, it looks superior to the typical hub motor.

      joes joey quite literally any bike with a Bionx d500 will ride like an ohm bike.

    • @yru435
      @yru435 7 років тому

      While any rear wheel with a d500 will have the extra mass, it should not affect nor dictate the ride quality much, as the spokes are full length and will provide a ride comparable to a wheel without the d500 device.
      What should affect ride much more is your tire choice and more importantly the frame design and material. The Ohm bikes have a very rigid and strong rear triangle, which you will appreciate at 30 mph.

    Just out of curiosity, do you have any idea what is battery theft like? Is it something you need to worry about, as in is it worth pulling it off whenever you park the bike for a few hours? I guess it depends on how hard it is to resell them, and how sturdy the locking mechanism that attaches it to the bike is. Seems like it would be harder to resell than something like wheels or a seatpost that are more commonplace, but the value is also higher. This is one of my large concerns when I'm thinking of getting an e-bike, because if it does happen, that will cost me a ton to replace.

    Good review. I am a subscriber. How do compare this bike to the Specialized Vado 6.0 yellow ducks?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому +1

      Ha! Sounds like you watched that review ;) I'd say this is very close because of the frame balance, fenders, lights etc. but Specialized has a fancier fender technology in place with the long rubber sections and the channel thing at the front. You have to pay a lot more for the Specialized Class 3 Vado model vs. the OHM which can be unlocked for free and I do like that it has a throttle. It's a close call, might come down to that throttle or living near a Specialized dealer or wanting a hub motor vs. mid drive

    • @pioneer7777777
      @pioneer7777777 6 років тому

      ElectricBikeReview.com I'm leaning towards the Bionx for long term durability and reliability since the hub motor fewer moving parts and the regen will reduce brake wear. It does not look as stealthy but I am hoping that with panniers it would cover it up.

    14 gauge spokes a rider 200 pounds a few pounds of gear add some weight from motor and toss in some torque and you got an awesome spoke breaking machine!!!

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому +3

      The D-Series motor is spoked to the center hub vs. motor casing and hasn't had issues with loose or broken spokes the way that some cheaper system have. I'm guessing you could go over 300 lbs and be fine. The rims are 30 mm width, have reinforcement eyeletts and you've got a 15 mm and 12 mm axle setup so it should hold up great

    • @yru435
      @yru435 7 років тому +2

      Not true, John Rogers. The 32° wheels, in 650B size, with 14 gauge spokes are more than adequate, and the torque of the motor does not pull on the drivetrain like a mid-drive system: the motor pushes off of the reinforced dropout on the left side. The drivetrain does not receive any additional torque.

    • @johnrogers3546
      @johnrogers3546 7 років тому +1

      I'm glad that you think it's strong enough. I have lost a bunch of rims from spoke failure and thought this one was gonna be another one!

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      I'm not a mechanical engineer or bike designer but Liam (an OHM employee and category one downhill rider) and I went out last night to a mountain trail and he was running tubes inside of tubeless (something I had never heard of) to keep from bending rims but also get the soft traction for technical sections... he jumped the bike and went down and over some very gnarly rocks. A couple of times he stopped to check the rims because he was concerned about bending them... we made it down fine and the spokes and rims were in tact. He weighs ~180 lbs and was going hard and fast through several sections, I'll post that video in a few weeks after the Sport but it could serve as a reference point. I'm sure you could break spokes, taco wheels, bend rims etc. but they held up well to many rigorous real-world conditions during my time filming

    Thanks for this channel it is very informative and encouraged me to go and get and electric bike.
    I eventually bought a 'Carrerra Vulcan e spec' which cost me £1000 and it seems to be able to do a lot of what the bikes you have reviewed do and more and a lot of the time for much less than half the money.
    Please look into the specs of the bike, I don't know enough about it to really say if the specs are comparable to the bikes you review, but just by riding it and performance alone, think this is great value for money.
    Have you an equivalent model in the USA ? would like to see a review if you have, I live in the UK and thus bike runs a Suntour rear hub drive.

      ElectricBikeReview.com Thanks for the reply, Carrera cycles are absolutely huge in this country approximately 5/10 mountain bikes (manual) I notice are Carrera and am wondering being a novice, how their electric bikes measure up with some of the competition.
      I think they have released 3 in the electric market, the crossfire which is one of them (being a hybrid version of the Vulcan which is the one I bought) is very well rated.
      The priced compared to some you review are about a third of the price and am wondering why they are so good value or money as they certainly don't seem poor quality.

    What does "Region Mode" mean?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому +1

      Great question! I was referring to power regeneration "regen" mode. This is activated automatically at the highest level when you pull the right brake lever and also be dialed in softly (with four levels) using the display panel. So last night when we took the bikes out on a mountain trail, I turned on regen so it would slow me down and capture some energy as we went down the hill, it captured enough energy to raise the overall battery percentage by ~3% over the course of 2.7 miles... not bad :D

    No matter what kind of brakes you have, there are physical reasons they really aren't going to slow you down much quicker. Rear brakes completely fail at around 0.3G-force where the real wheel will actually lift off the ground and a total of around 0.67G-force which will throw you over the handlebars. The brakes are really about control and ease of pulling. You simply cannot stop a bike faster because of your brakes. Even the cheapest brakes are capable of generating these G-forces, it just takes more hand strength.

    • @ImageMasters1000
      @ImageMasters1000 7 років тому

      VERY interesting point, tarstarkusz! You've done the science on this, haven't you?

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 7 років тому +1

      Check out Sheldon Brown's article on brakes. There is a link there to this information. But even without looking it up, everyone knows your back brakes will lock up and your front brakes can flip you. I simply pointed out when these things occur. When you try to stop a bicycle, your weight shifts forward. It does the same thing in a car or a motorcycle. There is no getting around this. There are upper limits to how quickly you can stop a bike. The big advantages of disc brakes are better grip in wet conditions and less hand exertion.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      Well said, I should practice speaking to hand fatigue more but there is something to be said for a larger surface brake pad dissipating heat. Thanks!

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 7 років тому

      There are lots of advantages, but the amount of feet it takes to stop at a given weight/speed at maximum braking power is not one of them. Well adjusted brakes are all capable of stooping the bike in the same amount of feet/meters.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      Yeah, there's always this trade-off with hub motor ebikes... a few companies have managed to implement quick release but you still have to disconnect the power cable, the BionX D-Series uses a 12 mm axle vs. 9 mm or 10 mm on most other setups and OHM overbuilds their biks so you can ride trail / cross country. All things considered, it does take some extra time and a 6 mm hex wrench to get the rear wheel off but I'd rather have the strength, it's not a deal breaker

    • @yru435
      @yru435 7 років тому +1

      They don't use an off-the-rack frame design (and they are continually modifying it), the BionX system actually is pretty deluxe, you should price this BionX system as a stand-alone kit! Also, most of the components are at least two levels above entry level quality. All of that costs $$. The component features may not be something everyone values, but it isn't a rip-off. If you were expecting all XTR components and a carbon frame, that is not being reasonable.

    • @pioneer7777777
      @pioneer7777777 6 років тому

      The main reason for the expense is that they use high quality parts. Most of the cheaper ebikes use cheaper parts that provide an inferior user experience (ie squeaking brakes, wobbling fenders, chunky shifting, etc) and higher failure rates (cheap nylon geared motors, etc). This motor system is top notch and the fork, brakes, fenders, lights, etc are all well above average compared to all the sub $2k ebikes. Also consider that a Bionx kit with battery alone is $2500 and it makes a pre built bike seem much better. Also, they're on sale right now. I just bought one and am waiting for it now!

      It's a lot of money, and that's in USD not CAD, but I think it's worth it if you need the fenders, racks, lights etc. because they cost a lot on their own if you buy a cheaper bike and have to upgrade stuff... and then it will rattle or not look as nice. The bike is well balanced and very zippy. OHM Offers a Mountain model that's a bit cheaper but they are indeed a high-end brand
