Massive difference in the camera quality now Alex! Awesome stuff 😁 keep it up - ps looking forward to seeing your videos on the Everdell big box and Robinson Cruseo Collectors Edition
Love the video, thanks! I missed out on the first kickstarter, but excited it is coming back with a bunch of updates and minis!! Anyway, I am going to go all-in for sure this time.
great review as always I share your hesitance over the seemingly overly random stealth mechanics in what is a stealth game. the theme of Assassins Creed grabs me more than this but am very happy it is based upon the V Commando engine. I have a game called AD1666 which, though not a stealth game per se, has very good mechanics for stealth that utilizes the stealth ability of the sneaker, the awareness of the, err sneakee plus things like disguses, weapon obviousness, descriptions of you etc. you should check out AD1666, it us excellent.
Thank you a lot for this review. As you said, you’d like to play the best games in given genre. Have you tried “Rambo: The Board Game - First Blood”? If so, how does this stack up against Rambo? Another question, I know “Sniper Elite” is leaning more towards hidden movement area, but still about being stealthy and sneaky, both you marked as 4/5 game. Which one is more interesting for you? Thank you in advance for your reply, and good luck, always appreciate your content.
This one went on and off my wishlist for a long time. The KS might finally get me to bite. I have no attachment to the assassin's creed IP so I passed on that one. I like the commandos style (I loved the pc game as a kid too)
I love this game. I was sad when my buddy sold it and I didn't have a chance to buy it from him. Any idea when its going to come to KS? Thanks for your videos. Stumbled on your channel when I was looking at backing Merchants of the Dark Road and appreciated your frank assessment.
A great video. Regarding your issue with losing your stealth on a die roll... so what sort of mechanic or method would you suggest instead, to determine when an enemy soldier spots you?
That's an excellent question that I don't have an easy answer offhand. If nothing else more mitigation, or less binary impact. e.g. not necessarily being completely spotted and alarm, but a guard moving towards you, various tiers of how bad it is.
@@BoardGameCo I can see the concept of "more mitigation" playing a part. Perhaps incorporate some mechanism which determines the amount of cover you have, or the manner of your movement, and use that information to determine the result of the "you've been spotted" die roll. But then that gets away from the reality that this is an abstract game (given how the different tile sizes each abstractly dictate the stealth rules). So yeah, I get what you're saying. Perhaps their new upcoming edition will address the matter.
Does the game not have a mechanic where failure potentially kills off your favorite commandos? seems like a no-brainer way to deal with that issue. Re:videogames, The Game dev Mimimi handles the modern day Commandos-like games and they are well worth playing; Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3. Though, i would argue that the Commandos gameplay still holds up today, the games can be frustrating to run on modern systems. I'll keep my eyes out for the new V-Commandos Kickstarter, thanks for the video.
Alex This and previous videos have only had Dutch subtitle options. Dont know if you have any control over that but English subtitles might be a better option ;-)
Good point about re-visiting old PC games for which you have fond memories. Generally disappointing, I find I indeed played them to death already years ago and/or they just look terrible by today's standards. I object to them having to change the name now with the latest KS - which is a bit pricey, but I will get it at retail. Could you jazz it up with a couple of boxes of Airfix soldiers?
It's very disappointing that you say this is not really any good non-solo. i was looking forward to the kickstarter, and getting this for my group to play.
The theme of this game really appeals to me and this is the first I’ve heard of it, so thanks for making the video. Any idea how it might compare to Black Orchestra? I’ve had that one on my to-buy list for a while but never pulled the trigger.
If you liked the Commandos video games you should try the Shadow Tactics video game. It's a very similar kind of game. It goes on sale pretty often and it's highly worthwhile :-)
I've played Reichbusters but not V-Commandos. It definitely sounds like there's overlap. I'd be curious what Alex thinks of Reichbusters but, if he doesn't like the dice rolls for stealth in V-Commandos, he wouldn't like the amount of rolls in Reichbusters. Personally, I like Reicbusters and I backed Assassin's Creed (which I'm looking forward to), so I'll likely check out the V-Commandos 2 Kickstarter to see if it looks good.
I don't know about the Stealth you're talking so vividly.. If the whole stealth plan and actions are ruined just by rolling 1-2 on a 6-sided dice, I don't think that is such clever mechanism.. I've played Commandos with 3 different groups of people and all players quickly realized that going "full-auto" is much better than trying to sneak somewhere and getting rekt just because they rolled 1 or 2. - if it was 8-sided or perhaps 10-sided dice, okay. But it's not and the chances of getting spotted and hence trigerring the alarm are way too high.. The game by no means looks cool, is unique and I love many aspects about it - but the stealth system is way too random and it ruins the experience, at least in my experience, a lot (especially when the most effective way is shooting with silent-weapons where noone can spot you and you can't trigger alarm + you get more dice for successful hits).
Interesting... When you say go full shooting, do you mean forgetting stealth entirely? Because my own experience there is that you generally lose pretty quickly, the enemies are too strong to engage them outright. Regarding using silence weapons, I completely agree, that was my point as to why I don't like picking characters and instead being assigned them randomly... because otherwise I'm picking that silenced weapon every single time.
@@BoardGameCo I am sorry it took me that long to answer.. I don't mean forgetting stealth entirely, but we would usually use silent weapons where possible and managing our stances between visible and not visible, depending how we wanted enemies to move... What I have the biggest issue with is that we've almost never used "stealth melee".. because that 3+ roll is just way too random (and there is only one character from one expansion that can re-roll it I think).. and this element is killing it I feel.. And once you are loaded with grenades and everything, it's get easier to kill all those spawning soldiers. + we had huge problems with Scout ability, being able to cross the walls (windows) making it so easy.. so then it is like "you can pick characters randomly" as you said, but I feel it still gets way too easy once you have silent weapons + scout in your party (which happens majority of times with the basic edition).. and nerfing it via house-rules.. I just wish the silent melee killing (3+ dice roll) was more effective (and having more options how to execute it) and killing everyone less forgiving. Do you feel that some characters are just way too strong?
You had me at "it's like the old Commandos computer game." :D
That's a good enough reason :)
Yassss :)
I love V-Commandos, it is one of my favourite solo games. Thanks Alex for bringing attention to this hidden gem.
It's excellent :) So much fun :)
Massive difference in the camera quality now Alex! Awesome stuff 😁 keep it up - ps looking forward to seeing your videos on the Everdell big box and Robinson Cruseo Collectors Edition
Thank you :)
Shadow Tactics is similar to Commandos and it's really good. If you want a more modern game I mean.
On my radar....but too many games :)
Great video as always! 👍 Definitely interesting, but hopefully not enough to pull me in 😂
Lol we'll see.
Love the video, thanks! I missed out on the first kickstarter, but excited it is coming back with a bunch of updates and minis!! Anyway, I am going to go all-in for sure this time.
Go for it :) it's a blast
This and your other reviews helped me decide to back the all in (no minis pledge) are the chips cardboard? They have a nice clinkey sound. :). Thanks!
The chips are cardboard sadly.
great review as always

One of my Top 10 games. Love playing this game. I am missing the Secrets Weapons expansion and hope to pick it up with the new KS.
Yep, I need to get all the expansions.

Not sure actually, I think in the next month or two,

I am really excited for Assassins creed. Coming soon. Cheees and good Video!
Yes!
I passed on AC, hope I don’t regret it.
also looking forward to Assassins Creed very much.
This feels like Legends of War - Patton's Campaign.
Hmm, never looked into that one.

I did try playing commandos a few years back, completely agreed on gameplay holds up but tricky to play.
Alex are we going to see a 'best of video..' anytime soon 🙂? Best civ builder, best stealth etc.
Alex

I hope Wolfenstien can deliver on some of the silent tactics as well
Agreed, I didn't back that one but I was definitely intrigued in terms of what they can do and whether I'll pick it up later.
It's very disappointing that you say this is not really any good non-solo. i was looking forward to the kickstarter, and getting this for my group to play.
Sorry :( it's still good with more...but best solo.
The theme of this game really appeals to me and this is the first I’ve heard of it, so thanks for making the video.
Any idea how it might compare to Black Orchestra? I’ve had that one on my to-buy list for a while but never pulled the trigger.
black orchestra is nothing like v-commando.
nothing to compare apart from theme of taking out Nazis.
Black Orchestra is great btw.
Never played black orchestra but didn't get the impression it's a stealth game.
i would describe it as a push your luck pick up and deliver game.
is quite simple mechanically but very tense and enjoyable
If you liked the Commandos video games you should try the Shadow Tactics video game. It's a very similar kind of game. It goes on sale pretty often and it's highly worthwhile :-)
I have my eye on it eventually, but wasn't a fan of the current KS situation around it.
@@BoardGameCo sure, but the videogame is the videogame?
@@AdamJorgensen Oh you mean that :) I missed that word.
I hope burncycle delivers on this feeling. I loved the pc game.
Oh good call, burncycle did have similar notes.
need that wild assent review
