There's a guy, a crime writer I know, called Richard M Litchfield is writing this murder up. He tells me the Paisley note was not left by Edmonstone. I have read some of it, and it is a really fascinating case. Oh, and he wasn't fired from the brewery, but from a local carter's business.
I can never understand how anyone could eat a hearty meal before being executed. as for the murderer saying may god have mercy!!! he never had mercy on Mickey and neither did god. Finally, if there were no killings in Scotland…the Scots would have no reason to say “mudderrr” would they.
I may be wrong, but I suspect 'the prisoner ate a hearty breakfast' was a kind of ritual formula - rather like "lessons have been learned from....." is today. If I knew I was going for the long drop eating is the last thing I could do. Even so, he was right to pray for mercy. The Lord knows our hearts, and of those we write off.
