- It's been another big year for the MCU. They've dropped 3 Disney+ shows, 3 movies, a Halloween special, and a series of shorts. There are now 40 films, shows, and specials in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and PHASE 4 has had it's final major release.
So today it's time to update my ranking of the MCU!
The MCU is the shared universe put out by Marvel Studios based on the #Marvel comic books.

I am aware that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special comes out in a couple of weeks. I get why some of you think I should have waited. But stop and think about things form my perspective.
My goal is to post this video when the most people are looking to talk about phase 4 and the MCU's output over the last year. That's far more likely to be after the release of a major blockbuster than after the release of a niche, special on a streaming service released during Thanksgiving break.
I also have a hard time viewing a special about Kevin Bacon as a more definitive closing to phase 4 than Wakanda Forever.

I don’t mind people asking me why I didn’t wait, but most of the comments are phrased, “You should have…”
I don’t mind, just include it on your list next time you do a ranking. Plus we already know the legendary Kevin Bacon will carry The Holiday Special to the top of the MCU.

Not exactly, 2008 had 2 mcu movies with iron man and incredible hulk, 2009, no mcu movie. 2010 had 1 with iron man 2, then 2011, thor and cap first avenger. And 2012, the Avengers
There's literally been 18 projects in phase 4 (9 in 2021 and 9 in 2022)

God bless you Sean. I don't think I could do a full ranking list of the whole MCU. I don't know how to compare a huge blockbuster movie in the series to She Hulk or I Am Groot. I tend to like most ALL of the movies more than the tv series. Appreciate all your hard work. Loved all the movie clip cutaways in your video. So fun.

As a big Spider-Man comic reader, Homecoming works really well as a Spider-Man story. It just tries something different from the movies that came before it
I really like that movie too, despite placing it maybe lower in my list than it should be. I like the cast and the villain, even if Keaton plays another "I hate Tony Stark" villain. But, man, one of the scenes always makes me think it topped the Spider-Man Jesus Train Scene from Spider-Man 2. Far From Home is maybe a little worse, but that's because of where in the timeline it ended up in. I don't know how I feel about Mysterio, but FFH is still a fun film. No Way Home... easy Top 10, no; 5. There's so much to unpack.
@@dannyhargreaves3340 I'd argue Vulture isn't another villain who just hates Tony stark. Instead he's a guy who hates rich people in general because of how careless they are. He never planned to do anything to Tony. The reason he tried to pull a heist on Tony's moving jet was because tinkerer convinced him too and it would've made him a lot of money.

For some reason I'm still shocked that Sean loves it (in a good way) because I remember his first impression with episode 1 was complaining over Kate Bishop overshadowing Clint. Moon Knight is the opposite because his first impression with episode 1 was very positive but then he was underwhelmed with the show overall.
That's like being the skinniest kid at fat camp, not very impressive and still forgettable.

Nice to see Guardians Vol. 2 is no longer at the bottom of the list! Really just goes to show how mixed you felt on phase 4 as a whole. I’m hopeful that phase 5 is at least a little better.
That’s what Disney and Taika Waitit get for releasing a trash film like Thor 4 so theres more bottom tier

Idk where I’d put Black Panther: Wakanda Forever but it ended phase 4 on a high note imo and I hope we get more movies like it in the future. From the looks Ant-Man 3 and Guardians 3, next year looks to be the year of completed MCU trilogies, and for that I’d say the future looks bright

LEGENDARY. This is historic man...
I dont get why people dislike the falcon and the winter soldier. IT WAS A GREAT SHOW. The action sequences were on point. The character development was great. The main villain was so intriguing in so many different ways. And that final speech at the end by falcon was sooooooo moving. It was a great show. Sure it wasn't the greatest thing marvels ever made. But it was truly a good show.
Just curious Sean - obviously I understand why you have not included Daredevil in this ranking since that show was not a Marvel Studios production, but given that he’s now a part of the MCU, where would you personally rank Daredevil in this list?
Very very high on the list
Definitely top 3 for me - i may put Endgame and IW higher due to their epic nature and just how endlessly rewatchable both are, but Daredevil is easily the best when it comes to telling a solo character story for me personally.
I would put it at #1. It was pure "good filmmaking".

Loki and WandaVision in particular would both be top 15, at least, if they had ended differently)

This is a great list, and an awesome video! I love the editing style with clips cut in to prove your point or give a laugh, and you're arguments actually convinced me of a couple things I originally disagreed with. Very similar to my list I put out today actually, though I had Hawkeye WAY higher. I get that's not a typical top show for most people though.
edit: ALSO I've been torn to shreds for having GotG2 either way down on my list or dead last, same with Moon Knight, awesome to see someone on the same page!

To be clear, I like to love everything from 29 up, but there's so much MCU that I have to make that distinction.
1. Winter solider. Love the action, and a good conspiracy built story.
2.Guardians of the galaxy. Love the idea of a group of basically broken misfit avenger who have a great dynamic. Also HILARIOUS!

Huge respect to Sean for putting Shulky at the bottom of the list. This is why he's one of my favourite film review UA-camrs.
My personal ranking of the 2022 Phase 4 movies:
1. I will say that Dr. Strange MoM holds a high spot for me just for the simple fact that I am such a Dr. Strange stan that I would have happily ignored any flaws it had moreso than any other title. I do understand the people that say the movie outright sucked... but that could never be me. I am THAT invested in seeing where the magical corner of the MCU goes. If it's anything like the comics we are in for fun times in the future. Nothing would have soured this movie for me except maybe if they chose to kill off Stephen in this one which they fortunately didn't. Benedict says he loves playing the role and is very satisfied. I'm the same with anything X-Men related too.
2. I enjoyed Wakanda Forever more than I did the first BP even though it recycles a few too many plot points we've seen before (they didn't even try to conceal the copy/paste) for my liking. The reason I liked it more is that in the first BP the events that create the villain and lead to his rise in power are due to a double whammy of both T'Challa and T'Chaka making the two most boneheaded decisions in the whole MCU (in case you thought Tony calling out a terrorist on television was dumb). The sequel remedies that somewhat.
3. Sean is totally right about this film's potential for greatness. Love and Thunder let me down as a Thor fan. It let me down as a GnR fan. It let me down as a Waititi fan. It let me down as a fan of the Gorr the God Butcher plotline in Thor God of Thunder (which was essentially Thor's version of No Way Home which was cool to read. 3 Thors? 1 Thor wielding 2 Mjolnirs AND the necrosword that he wears like a black cape?? Pure entertainment.). What let me down the most is that the movie furthers the case for why 4th installments of a (somewhat) successful trilogy series are a bad idea. Superman IV was the original offender. Here's hoping John Wick 4 doesn't go the same way.

@@mjtrace8391 I see a lot of people's takes on She-Hulk be along the lines of "it's not great, but not as bad as some things we've seen before in the MCU" which is objectively false Furthermore the marketing dpt of this series hid behind the mask of "it's not made for you" but if you remove the mask and look at the things that the people it is made for enjoy... turns out it's not really made for them either. Like Sean said it diverted way to much of its creative energy to preemptively troll the trolls. Not a great plan.

tbh, I was expecting this list to drop when the Guardians Holdiay Special released so that all of phase 4 could be covered all at once. having said that, I enjoyed phase 4 for the most part and believe that it's overhated in a lot of areas because this was really an experimental phase of trying new stuff and starting over in several areas. here's to smoother sailing for phase 5🍻

Just wondering Sean, if Daredevil was officially announced as canon where would you place it in your overall ranking? Personally it’s my favorite piece of any media so straight up to #1
Wow I couldn't believe how much different my list is compared to yours, but I think it's a good thing though, as IF everyone had the same opinion on the MCU shows/movies in order than these tier lists would be boring to watch. MoM was just a huge blast for me despite the missed potential it had (and tbh you’re basically begging for disappointment by having ”madness” in you movie title since it’s such a subjective term) Also IMO it has the best peaks out of all Phase 4 and the direction, Wanda’s villany and Strange’s character arc are what elevates this movie so much for me.
I thought Wanda's villainy came out of nowhere, since I didn't have a Disney+ account. That's going to be a pitfall for some MCU films in the future. That said, I don't outright hate the film. It's still a visual wonder-piece.
