The "decorative pull" is a striker for "strike anywhere" matches, maybe it's a pipe smoker's knife ?

Could be! That also explains the excess of junk inside the groove. Thanks 😎

As a pipe smoker, I can tell you it's not, there are "smokers knives" like A.G. Russell, bunch from Sheffield, some from Laguiole that cost an arm and a leg, and a lot of pipe smokers use a "doctors knife" pattern, you have the pill crusher that works as a tamper, blunt spatula to clean out dottle and scrape cake and a knife obviously for cutting things like plug tobacco.
Back to the topic of pipe smoker's knife, those usually have a few tools, they have a tamper at one end, a poker/pick (basically a thin stick) for aerating tobacco and cleaning, and a knife (usually rounded tip for safer bowl reaming) match strikers are common but not universal and you can see them on a lot of traditional knives just for the convenience and I guess look.

@@MrHQQXPossibly should have said,, " Maybe it was a knife that was used by a pipe smoker : ... as an ex pipe smoker I'm well aware of what a dedicated pipe tool looks like.... So maybe it just belonged to someone who used a lot of strike anywhere matches for what ever reason....??? 😁

If you soak it in olive oil it will polish to almost like new and stop rust. The oil rehydrates the plastics.

I found my father-in-law’s really old pocket knife in similar condition in the bottom of
an old toolbox he gave me. I plan to restore it and give it back as a gift. Thanks for this video!

These small knives are great for cleaning under the fingernails and makeshift toothpicks, it's a constant companion to my full sized EDC.

That's interesting. I never considered the various color grades of rust. Well done, and thanks!

This is a vintage piece from Western States Cutlery in Boulder, CO. If you search “Boulder, CO trapper knife” you can find similar models. I’m not sure the exact name/pattern for this model. Hope that helps!

I have found a good lubricant for knives - a 50:50 mix of ATF and bar oil. I keep it in my pneumatic oiler for general lubrication. I put it on the hinge parts of my pocket knives, yesterday. This oil has good staying qualities and the ATF will penetrate into the molecular structure of the metal. It does not provide a lot of rust prevention but it is better than nothing. I also used compressed air to blow off any excess oil and then wiped them dry with a shop towel.
