Valerie's Story: Valerie shares how she beat her malignant melanoma

  • Valerie knew she had a mole on her neck. What she didn't notice, however, was that the mole was getting bigger. Valerie went to her pediatrician who then recommended she visit a dermatologist. The dermatologist removed the mole and sent it off to be tested. When the results came back, Valerie and her mother were shocked: it was malignant melanoma. In other words, skin cancer. Valerie came to Nationwide Children's and went into surgery shortly thereafter. After surgery, the team of oncologists and surgeons were happy to report that Valerie was cancer free.

I have around 40 moles on my body. Some have discolouring, are darker and more than one colour and some are bumpy. I'm positive I have skin cancer and I'm planning on telling my mom today so she can get me a visit at the doctor.

@@sophieheritage478 It turned out I didn't have skin cancer, thank God for tat, but instead it was said that it might just be my genetics and sun damage. They just very closely resembled malignant melanoma skin cancer moles.

Please keep your follow-up appointments to keep checking the lymph nodes even if they are clear and the mole and surgery are done. Sometimes, a few undetectable cells can travel first to the brain or lungs/ those closest lymph nodes, and you may feel swelling in the lymph nodes or extreme fatigue. If you start having falls, an aneurysm, slurred speech, headaches, or a cough that won't go away please know this is the path Melanoma can travel. If those cells are undetected or misdiagnosed as other conditions it can easily become stage IV. Radiation and Immunotherapy are usually the only treatments. Chemo isn't an option for those cells so preventative chemo usually isn't an option. It would have to be preventative Immunotherapy to teach your body to fight those cancer cells

I’m 18 and I have two moles that i’m concerned about. One on my shoulder and one below the armpit area. These two moles have been around since a very young age but they never increased in size and are fairly small. However recently i remembered hearing somewhere that moles can be cancerous.
What concerns me is that I once had a strange experience with the one under my arm. I was able to scratch it off from how soft it was but it began to itch and grew back to its same small size. Not to say regrowth means it’s cancerous but it i don’t think it’s ready to be dismissed yet. Also the one on my shoulder has a poorly defined border and a few different shades of brown which brings me here doing research on melanoma and learning about these different skin cancers. It hasn’t increased in size but knowing i could be catching it at an early stage, I don’t want to take any risks or push my luck. I plan on expressing my concerns with my mother again so we could get it checked out once she gets back from recovery at the hospital which will be in a few days from now (she had surgery for something else)
I will update this after i get tested
