In the 1985 version of the 1984 song “Take on Me”, the Oberheim Prommer and Oberheim DMX and Yamaha DX7 VRC-101A patch “Electric Bass 2” (which sounds similar to the Yamaha DX7 internal patch “Bass 1”) were heard.
Keep in mind, in these videos audio had been professionally mixed and processed. These pieces of gear sound very different dry. The DMX sounds horrible dry. Lame to be frank.
I didn't use the individual outs to process, I ran the mono output into my interface and added the plugin version of the Lexicon 224. I could easily get a better sound but Id lose the ability to record synths along with the drum machine. The UAD apollo only has 8 inputs. Also digital recording won't sound as fat because its not recorded to tape nor ran through a six figure analog console.
By the way, if you can recreate the drums on "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" by Cherrelle (they used a DX, not DMX) I would bow down to your programming skills!
I programmed the pattern last night. The pattern isn't perfect but its close enough. I still don't know the chords to the song. I can't find them online. Do you know them? I can probably recreate the song damn close.

Hi mate I see you got a UAD interface too, can you briefly explain to me why this hardware beats say using Ableton Live Midi drum machines? (from a simplified technical viewpoint). I'd love for this to be explained to me.

How do you get the snare to sound so beefy on yours? Did you put higher tuning range pots in yours? Or is it all in the way you mixed/EQ'd it? I love my DMX but you really get it to sounds JUST like the old 80's records!
I simply blended volume levels until they were perfect. Then I ran it through a lexicon 224 and a harrison EQ. Really the trick is getting volume levels exactly where they should be.
dx7 came out early 83, dmx 1981; Artists literally bought what was brand new and cutting edge at the time. This combo was popular in 83, but yes more so 84-85.
***** It depended on who you were and whether you could afford them. When the DX-7 came out, it was priced at about 1,000 dollars and only the biggest artists and studios could afford them. Chicago was the first to use the DX-7 especially it's Rhodes sound because they are a big act. The DMX which actually came out in late 1980 was priced to the point only mid-level studios and low level people with a burst of money could buy it. I mean those who couldn't afford a Linn LM-1 or perhaps a Linn-Drum could get a digital drum machine. The combo you mentioned became prevalent in 1985 because the prices dropped on both and more low-level studios and artists could afford them.
KajimiMan One example is Ray Parker Jr. and Ghostbusters. Did you know he made that entire song with only a DMX and a Jupiter-6 because that's all he could afford at the time. Another is ironically New Jack Swing of the late 80s and early 90's was made with old equipment. Teddy Riley made Keith Sweats first album with a DX-7, A Mirage and a Prophet 5 synth, That's all he could afford at the time. Other studios used Arps, Moogs and the occasional Korg with the TR-808 being the main drum machine.

ebeep LOL its PRESET 2. : BRASS 2. If you think thats good, you should hear the TX816. It has sounds, you wouldn't even think are possible on a DX7. Like a convincing acoustic piano.
Thanks! Ha ha! This is not the first time I've flipped for a DX7 preset! The DX7 is so amazing in that many of it's patches seem benign on their own (especially without effects) but put them in the context of music and they make magic!

Hardware uses software to control the User interface. It has nothing at all
to do with the sounds. Hope this helps

The UAD interface is what lets me record into my DAW. In this case the Oberheim is outputting audio into my UAD Apollo and I am tracking with my DAW.
