I used to do this with a d300 and zoom h4n (non pro) that has very bad built in pre-amps. The sony a7iii pre-amps arent that bad comparatively. Good stuff mate! These days, ive ditched the zoom recorder entirely but use a saramonic sr pax1 instead. Slighlty quieter pre-amps when paired with some mics and its also easier and quicker to control gain/volume via the knobs on the fly. You can even purchase those small xlr saramonic mics and attach them to the front of the pax1 to get louder scratch audio if need be.

Some people use video heads but, my opinion is if you're not behind the camera recording things, but in front of it, you won't need a smooth video head, as the can be pricey as well. As for my overheads, I use C stands with gripheads and extension arms, with ballheads on their end. I mount my microphone either on my desk using a microphone arm, or on a c stand .Often I mount the recorder on a 'magic arm' aka smallrig arm.
You can either have your camera on a ball head/video head it's up to you and the recorder attached to the tripod using a 'magic arm' aka 'small rig arm' you can also use a 'super clamp' or a coldshoe to 1/4 inch adapter and mount it on top of the camera there's lots of ways to do it.

I think what I'm confused with is if the recorder is synced with the camera will the only SD card I need to use be from the camera or will I still need to use the H4 SD card as well?
If you do your recordings this way the camera will use the audio coming the H4N Pro or the microphone you have connected to it. There's no sync required after.
The zoom H4N Pro has only one output socket with can be used for either line out or headphones and unfortunately it is the only one since you don't have one on the camera. My suggestion would be to either check your audio prior to recording your video for any issues then disconnect the headphones and feed the cable into your camera/ or to record onto your SD card and sync in post after, that will keep you headphones socket free and you can monitor your audio throughout your recording/ or try find some kind of a splitter which is not something I've tried and cannot give and recommendation on, Thanks.

Hi, yes it does ever so slightly, that's why it's crucial to have the audio levels on your camera to the lowest value possible, the higher you increase it the more noise it introduces. But, having it as low as possible makes it almost negligebale, having said that, if you're a perfectionist then your best option is to record separately and sync in post, thanks.

So if your camera is connected and your recorder red button is pressed once meaning it’s blinking red and showing the track dB meters then, you will have audio recorder on the camera provided you record on your camera. So in essence you do not need to record on your H4NPro but it needs to be armed(pre record is enabled/ blinking red record button), thanks.
The audio is not coming from the camera and is being recorded into the H4n pro like your comment suggests, but from an external microphone and it's being recorded staright into the camera linked to the video file thanks to the H4n pro recorder.

The reason I'm not using the microphone on the H4N Pro to record is because 1 prefer a more directional pattern microphone that can also be used outside of the frame and boomed above my head like a shotgun microphone and 2 is because I prefer the quality of the audio coming from the microphone I'm using over the one coming from the Zoom. The microphone I used in this video was the rode NTG3. Both the Rode microphone and the one on the zoom are condenser microphones however the zoom has a unidirectional pickup pattern which means it picks up sound equally from anywhere around it where as the Rode has a super cardiod patern which means will cancel some of the sound coming from the side and from the back and pick up mostly from the front. It also makes a difference in terms of reverb, Thanks.
Hi, basically that's the only way to control the level of the audio recorded inside the camera, while using this setup. Which you do need to adjust otherwise it may clip and distort.
Hi, I’m sorry I did not mention that. To name a few reasons: • An external recorder has higher quality preamps. • Can allow placement of microphones farther away from the camera/ closer to the subject/talent without introducing noticiable noise. • It can power condenser mics with 12-48v phantom power. Not to mention the additional functions of a recorder like limiters, compressors, high pass etc. Using this method makes it a bit easier since you don’t have to sync in post, thanks.
@@florinG I did know about the higher quality pre-amps. Figured plugging in puts two sets of pre-amps in series. Assuming the camera pre-amp can then be set very low. Am I correct? Is there an optimal low level? Your other points were valuable, thank you.
@@MichiMallu on the zoom H4N Pro you don't need an attenuator unless you monitor your audio straight on the recorder in which case raising the level too high for your headphones would make the audio clip in the camera you're recording otherwise you don't need one plus you can monitor the audio straight from your camera if you're camera has headphones out, thank you+ best of luck.
Hi, If the audio level is set to 1 on the camera there should be little to no noise introduced. Be shore not to use a very long 3.5mm trs to trs cable, stay away from mobile phones and monitors because they cause hiss, also be Shute the issue is not from your mic+xlr setup. if after all this checked the audio is still unsatisfactory the best thing is to use the file straight from the sd card and sync in post, thanks.

Just purchase a Tackstar 600 for $30 and cut out all the Zoom interfacing. Mic has +10db of gain and will drive the sony pre amps with clean audio set at low input gain levels. $ well spent.

How do you monitor the audio since you use the headphone jack from the zoom and my a6300 doesn't have a headphone port

At 2:03 I dont understand why you turn down the headphonevolume. What impact does that have on the recording volume? Can you explain?

No, the TRRS won't work, and that type of adapter is meant to be used when recording using a mini shotgun for example on your mobile phone.

Line level from H4N to Camera’s Mic level??? You need a microphone Attenuator Cable in between!
Nope, there's no need for an attenuator cable it works perfectly with a regular minijack cable.
