    Fun fact this series was actually only supposed to go to episode 4. The others only exist because the fans demanded them. So he progressively made Carl go more and more insane. He personified the situation with the mask being the fandom and Carl being the artist.

      Well the thing is he never wanted to go beyond episode 4 so he did made the other episodes the way they were in retaliation. It's not the first time he did that eithe. He did something similar with the Charlie the unicorn series, but instead of more episodes he made a half assed series that basicly took the humor in a whole new direction.

    Theory: Carl was a sociopath with deepseeded depression. He knew no one could love him, so instead, all Carl wanted was someone who cared enough about him that they hated him, love and hate both being powerful emotions. Paul was the last person who would tolerate him enough to let him try, the last person he could share himself with, and Carl believed he was the one who would care, the one who would truly and deeply hate him. When Paul left, he was alone with himself, and it drove him insane. He needed someone else, someone to take his thought away from himself, even if he himself didn't realize it. Mask Paul was his psyche, artificially filling that spot while at the same time leading him to "finish his work". When Carl finally learns that Paul is dead, he is left with no one but himself. He is truly alone.
    It is then that Carl finally finds the thing he'd wanted all along. He truly, deeply, hated himself, and that self hatred led him to what his psyche wanted all along. Carl finished his work...by killing himself.

    • @lonelybrat9256

      I think Carl did all that to try and impress Paul. He was trying to make him proud. eventually he killed off the rest of the world so they could be together alone. But then he found Paul's body and realised he's failed. so he killed himself, Paul seemingly forgiving him for it all.

    Interesting thing to note: From the point the mask got involved onwards, the outro music got progressively distorted. But, in the final episode, the outro music suddenly returned to normal.
    Maybe, in a sense, that outro music was representative of Carl's psyche as he slowly descends from "impulsively violent and generally immoral, but at least a decent grasp on reality" to "completely fucking batshit." Then, with Carl's realization that Paul is dead (and has been dead for a long time, most likely), it snapped him into reality enough to realize the mask wasn't really alive at all, hence the outro music's return to normality (and the mask no longer appearing to float in the first place, merely being around his neck).

    The outside meaning was an extension of the author's feelings regarding the relationship between himself and his audience as the fandom grew and became toxic to their author. This is why there is a slight but noticeable different feeling between 1-4 and 5-12 as the author was losing autonomy in his own art and reflected that in the later waves of episodes with snark toward those unimpressed of the later videos yet their actions just before being the reason the videos exist. But I like to think the in-universe idea was showing Carl suffering from some form of antisocial personality disorder and has latched onto Paul as his only friend and confidant, the only person he would care if they came to serious harm. I chalk this up to a similar power dynamic in Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starlings' relationship, in which one party cares little if at all about human life (Lecter or Carl) where the other holds more mainstream moral beliefs (Starling or Paul). The latter party's personalities and criticism challenge the former's in a way others are usually unable to, making the mainstream character interesting and offering value as an audience in the least to them. When Paul rejects him, Carl spirals (up or down is your choice), into a wild spree of random ideas as he wanders and even crafts a mask in Paul's
    likeness as first a costume for a random sheep he came upon, then as an amulet of sorts which he spoke through in Paul's voice to himself, trying to get the feeling of critique that he enjoyed, later the mask appeared to become possessed by Paul's spirit and eggs Carl further and further. His lack of meaningful connection to anything and his final outcome of total destruction drive him to obsessively find Paul, becoming paranoid that the mask is not his friend, but a liar. His discovery of Paul pushes him over the edge as he recites, for the last time, a conversation between the two of them, screaming his own name to his death. His dependency on Paul to ground him is one of a few examples that antisocial personality disorder is not the whole story. Monotonous voice, but dictating emotion in a planned response to every comment makes it difficult to tell how feeling worked for him, we see him state that he was upset with no emotion in the voice or face. But nearing the end, he starts feeling emotions in a way that seems more typical and they only seemed to worsen his mental decay at that point. When he is using the sheep as a stand-in "Paul", the animal sat down, prompting slight panic and clear discomfort in his voice when he critiques the creature that Paul never sits, so it mustn't either, or it doesn't work. This is also explained in the outside meaning, but as an example of the author inserting the interactions he was having with his audience, Paul never sits, so it mustn't either, or it doesn't work. The breakup was so jarring to Carl after he was rejected without even being looked at by his only friend he begins to hallucinate intensely, needing that friend, the hallucination even ran bits with Carl to keep his moral, even thought the same hallucination told him to commit the discussed deeds. It's hard to tell even how much damage actually occurred, similar to American Psycho, the finale shows the lead character who had been murdering for months, it is discovered that his victims all seem to be fine, all of his lies were truths unknown to him, nothing bad seems to have happened,,,maybe(?). The audience may only get to see Carl's view, where the destruction is immense, when it may be unscathed in reality.

    • @CeaselessEnemy
      @CeaselessEnemy 3 роки тому

      Think of it like this: Sociopaths wouldn't flinch if someone else fell over, but they'd probably help said person up, because that's generally seen as a good thing to do. Shane Dawson, imo, scandalized sociopathy with his docu-series, and the series probably shouldn't be taken at face value. The person he hired to talk about it was extremely unprofessional in how she talked about it, too. People tried to correct her (even sociopaths), and she doubled down if I remember correctly, in how she talked about sociopathy and practically demonized it.

      Psychopathy, however, is more of a general lack of emotion. Not only do they lack empathy, but unlike sociopaths, they lack the ability to be happy or sad.
      Sociopaths, aside from empathy, still have a full range of emotions. It's just more self-oriented.
