It's amazing to see what has changed and what is the same. Changed: people's clothes (now no longer so daggy); buses (now not so hideously bright green and yellow); cars (now not so rectangular); State Bank sign (now non-existent - thanks incompetent 1980s ALP government!); Footscray Railway Station (modernised and expanded while still maintaining its original ambience of misery); Lynchs Bridge site (now 90s townhousing); Flinders Street flyover (demolished to make way for a view of the casino, even if it was ugly, it meant trams didn't get held up at King Street); train windows (they are bigger now but you can't open them any more). Same: Footscray Market (still the same eyesore); rail bridge over Maribyrnong River (grimy but historic and utilitarian); industrial buildings in Kensington (some of them look like squatters live there); park next to South Kensington station (nice enough); housing commission flats (cheap 70s modernist architecture never goes out of style); some of the buildings along Flinders Street (what is now the Immigration Musuem building still looks good); speed of train coming up to Flinders Street Station (can't they do something about this?).
Many thanks Gazza1967 for this video. While I didn't do this train ride back then, I do it every week now and it's very interesting to see what's changed. It's great to see videos such as this on YT as it's also a part of my history. Many thanks for posting.
Nice to see the following buildings which are now gone. 1) Footscray Bowling Alley at 2:22 minute mark; 2) Kensington army barracks at 4:12 minute mark
Glue factory at 4:02. Angliss abattoir and sheep skin drying stores not far away. River flats with a hundred years of percolating filth also added to the aroma. "South Ken" was local slang for a foul stench. Thanks for the memories.
Even though I was only 1 at the time, this brings back so many memories of when The Met was a thing and the trains used to look like this. Footscray still has some features back then that I recognise now. Footscray Market being one of them haha.

Hi, Gezza, I'd love to make contact about your footage - I'm independently making a doco about the Aussie music industry of the 1990's and some metro / train / city footage like this could be great to set the scene. I think that UA-cam needs more 80s/90s archival footage like this.
awesome footage to see the old Footscray station what a difference it is now and the Rialto Building amazing.
Im a bloke born 68 this really took me back.. Cheers

And orange VLINE trains.
Memories flooding back.
Oh no...dad not the belt NOOOOOOOOOK
AMF Footscray closed in the 1990s because of the drug addicts infesting the place
What took the bowling allys place?
Wow Footscray barely has changed in over 22 years. Will not be like that for much longer I assume.
Thank you so much for this video, it's so amazing to see my suburb during the very exact year I was born in.

I think that building at 5:56 is now the Immigration Museum, unless I'm confusing it with a different building.
It is; the signage says it was the Commonwealth Parliament Office at the time.
G'day collingwoodrules, i will take a look and let you know, cheers Gezza
Wow.....
Before melbourne turned into new york
can you remember what month it was in 1991
Beginning to look like modern day Melbourne.
Looks like there was more empty land by the river back then
Pls touch on your myki car---oh wait
I know you're joking, but I think the (short lived) scratch cards were used in '91.
After that they had the ones where they would use a hole punch on the date but you stuck 2together and you got a new pass
@@stellarjuju8788 yep haha, i remember doing that quite a few times til the conductor turned the ticket over
thats crazy
3:19 Was VIC Uni a brand-new institution then?
I think it was known as Footscray previously? Not sure though?
1991? wow i remember a lot more drug needles on the station and the tracks
Wonder if he was using a scratchy ticket? You could keep them and use them on the exact same day a year later til The Met caught onto it.
Had to be using one, Metcards first came in 1997, I believe?

back when Romper Stomper was filmed. There were a lot of skinhead gangs back then in Footscray/Melbs in general?
