Let me give you some advice. When you make another pole like this. As you are pouring the concrete. When you put about six buckets of concrete inside of the molding, take a 2 x 4 and jam it up and down and all around of the concrete. And as you are pouring the concrete continue to take the 2 x 4 stabbing it in to the concrete deep several times. This will get the air pockets out and give you a smooth outer surface when you remove the wood

Yes the depth is essential as well as the footing. That's why the 1st column fell. Rule of thumb atleast 20% of the column should be in the earth/foundation. Good look
