Baseball's Best Moments - Grover Cleveland Alexander Strikes Out Tony Lazzeri (1926 World Series)

  • Back in the mid to late 2000s, MLB.com ran a series I really enjoyed called Baseball's Best Moments: 3-4 minute clips of baseball's most memorable moments throughout history, including clips of the games and interviews with players and managers involved. I absolutely loved the series and it was probably one of the main things that got me into baseball.
However, in recent years the series has been essentially forgotten: for quite a few years, the links to these videos on MLB's websites were almost all broken and hidden away deep within the website (I only found these by searching for each one individually). However, I recently noticed that almost all of them have somewhat recently come back online, although they are still much harder to find than they should be.
In light of this, I have decided to upload all of the series that I can find in hopes that this series is not entirely forgotten, as they are extremely well made and include many interviews I've never seen anywhere else.
Unfortunately, a handful of these episodes seem to not exist any more on the internet, those being:
    - Jackie Robinson breaks the color barrier
    - Wade Boggs's 3000th hit
    - Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive games record
    - Nolan Ryan's 7th no hitter
    - Any others that I have not uploaded as far as I'm aware
If anyone has a copy of those mentioned please let me know.

The legend is that Pete had gone out drinking the night before Game 7 and was dozing off in the bullpen when he got the call. He started walking in very unsteadily so Hornsby went into the outfield to guide him to the mound. Pete didn't throw as hard as Walter Johnson but he had the best control of his era, maybe the best control ever. He liked to set up batters with fast balls and then get them out with sliders, and that's what he did with Tony Lazzeri.

This is great to watch, and while some of the footage is from the 1926 Series, some of it is not. When Lazzerri is shown at the plate wearing number six, this is not from 1926, as the Yankees did not have numbered uniforms until 1929.

I wish these two teams would play each other in the world series again. I'm a Cardinal fan so I'm biased, but these are the two most successful teams in MLB history.

One could argue that the Dodgers are more successful. They haven't won as many WS but they have taken in more dough.

@@howie9751 from a business standpoint I completely agree, but from a baseball standpoint it's hard for me to look at it that way since so much of that aspect is based in the market they play in. LA is always going to make more than STL in anything that happens there because it's such a huge market. I like the perspective though.

Tony Lazzeri is the only HOFer whose name appears on another HOFer's plaque. Both he and Alexander suffered from epilepsy. Lazzeri narrowly missed a grand slam on the pitch prior to his strikeout. And Alexander is the only player named for one US President and portrayed by another.
