    The redline is not 7800, but 8300. And the reason you get a surge of power around 6000 rpm is b/c of the variable valve timing.

    My favourite colour for the Elise. Stunning timeless design that doesn't need a garish colour to emphasise its looks and presence. Even after 6 years since the video was posted and 13 years since S2 Elise production ended, it is still the perfect sports car that looks better than most supercars. For me, the S3 Elise doesn't look as good as S2.

    Thanks for the great review. I own a 2005 and love it. It is so far beyond any competitor from price points above and below in driver involvement and entertainment. I would say that the only other negative to this car is the fragility of the body and the body construction that lacks true bumpers. A minor accident that involves no actual structural damage can add up to a totaled vehicle because of the expense and time involved with replacing the "clams".

    1.9 liter? Do your homework or at least say you're not sure when you dont actually know. This motor was used in the Celica GTS. Its technically a 1.7 liter but its very close to 1.8 so thats what its considered 1.8. Redline is more than 7,800 it's more like 8,400.

    The engine is the Toyota 2zz out of the Celica 190. It has Variable Valve Timing with Lift, which usually comes in around 6k on the Toyota.

    The car has 3 redlines; about 6k until it warms up and then about 8k (where the real magic is) and about 8500rpm burst mode for about two second periods. The Red limiter light lets you know...

    These little Toyota motors are NOT designed to rev. My 8000 RPM MR2 had zero compression left and leaked oil everywhere at 85K miles. It needed 6500-7000 RPM to hit 75 mph, so 4x as many engine turns as a powerful V8. Car was scrapped for $250 at 85K miles. None survived.

    • @04dram04
      @04dram04 3 роки тому

      Are you referring too the stock mr2 engine or the 2zz engine that's in this lotus. The stock mr2 engine is different than the 2zz.

    • @biffbifford402
      @biffbifford402 2 роки тому

      These Toyota motors in the Elise was tuned by Yamaha and MOST DEFINITELY ARE designed to rev, and rev high. You only hit the power and at 6000 rpm. There is a reason why many of these cars are outfitted for the track and raced. Out of the box they are ready to go. They are bulletproof. I’ve never had mine to the track, but I can tell you, uniquely, these engines LOVE LOVE LOVE to be reved.

    • @FFE-js2zp
      @FFE-js2zp 2 роки тому +1

      @@biffbifford402
      It loved to rev, until it didn’t. The Mech Eng 101 equation is Design Life = 1/(redline/5252)^2 compared to the same engine revved to various limits. That holds true across all technologies, since it’s comparing an engine to itself.
      My old MR2 shipped with a whopping 93 ft-lbs of torque, so it was slow as snails.

    • @biffbifford402
      @biffbifford402 2 роки тому

      @@FFE-js2zp I don’t have an MR2. The Elise uses a Toyota motor from a Corolla, tuned by Yamaha, and placed in the Elise. And yes, change the oil, and they are one of the most reliable high-reving engines you can get. Tens of thousands of miles have been logged at the track the world over. Maybe hundreds of thousands. You couldn’t ask for a more bulletproof engine. The Elise is naturally aspirated and can do 0-60 in about 5 seconds. Not too shabby for tech from 2005! But again, you have to remember to change the oil.

    • @FFE-js2zp
      @FFE-js2zp 2 роки тому

      @@biffbifford402
      My 1985 MR2 1.6L 4A-GE died at 85,000 miles. But with only 93 Ft-lbs of torque it needed every bit of the 7500 RPM redline to generate it’s 122HP. So the engine spun 4 times as many times per mile as a larger engine car. So at 85,000 miles it had 350,000 miles on the engine. I was young and stupid and changed the oil religiously every 3,000 miles, which probably destroyed the engine since that’s like every 15,000 miles on an average car. I should’ve changed the oil every 700 miles or less. With its 225 mile range, the oil had to be changed every 3 tanks of gas.

    Hmmm. You mention power a lot but that's not what this car is about. Carving up curvy roads is where it excels. Coming up to a turn , brake later, back on the gas earlier. Anyone can drive in a straight line. This ain't that car.
