I get that a lot of people aren’t super happy with some of the moves GMMG has made but he had a tough job coming in to SJ. He basically had to rip up all the BS that was the foundation of this team. The fact that he got us out of some of our worst contracts without giving up any major assets, netted us a ton of draft capitol, including multiple first round picks for the next few years and drastically improved our prospect pool is a win in my book. Also it’s not fun but we are locked in with the best odds at first overall after this year. Give this man about 3 years and see where the team is at. The tear down portion is pretty much over now we really get to see how hell handle the rebuild.

next season sharks shouldn’t focus on wins or losses, the biggest focus is to add to their prospect pool and continue to develop their guys, and focus on reducing the goals agains and adding some more goals for. I would be ok with 18 wins if we could get the +\- to under 115. That to me would be progress

I am seeing this post late so the Sharks did part ways with David Quinn and I completely agree with you. In fact I pretty much said the same thing in live chat with my favorite Sharks podcast @TheFinFactor. I don't think there is a coach on earth who could have done much more with this version of the Sharks and the injuries and whatever behind the scenes nonsense Coach Quinn was dealing with. Purely speculating but, I think Coach Quinn came close to if he did not actually lose the ear of his team. If a team tunes you out as a coach you are done at any level, any sport.
I also completely agree with Vegas' situation financially. This is a common story with championship teams in any sport with a salary cap isn't it? You manage to assemble a great team and they pull of the championship run and the week after the championship, after the victory parade and the champagne straight away the team begins to be disassembled.
Almost immediately key players and coaches get poached by other teams trying to bolster their own team and simultaneously tearing your team down. The teams in leagues that have a salary cap use accounting tricks and what not to build a great roster that cannot be held together past the current year so straight away teams have to figure out who to keep and who to let go. Secretly it would be cool if Vegas traded Hertl back to us but, I can't imagine that being a particularly great option for Hertl or the Sharks given how far we are from being a decent team let alone a team that can vie for a play off spot!
Just imagine if the Blackhawks or Kings had been able to keep those teams intact from their first championships? Both those teams were pretty great and I would expect at least one more championship for each would have been completely within the realm of possibility.
Since you posted this we have also parted ways with Hoffman, Lebank and Barabanov so add that money to our dollars under the cap and we are in a very good place to negotiate for some solid NHLers to help bolster this team. I think it highly unlikely that we will be able to acquire a top 6 forward or a top pairing D-man but, I fully expect that Grier will make every effort to bring in a bottom 9 forward (possibly) bottom 6 for sure and a bottom 3 defensemen which we desperately need.
Grier's modus operendi has been to bring in solid veteran's give them tons of ice time to bolster and reinvigorate their careers and then assuming the player in question does not go Hoffman on us flip them to a play off team at the deadline and I fully expect this pattern to continue for at least two more seasons while Grier does what San Jose has never done and that is fully stock our feeder system with prospects.
We have never had a proper feeder system as we were 20 straight seasons in the play offs under Doug Wilson and every season Wilson was robing the farm to bolster the team for a play off run. Consequently our cupboard was virtually bare when Grier took over. Not completely but, when you shut the cupboard door there was an ominous echo of emptiness excepting the spiders and rodents living in there!
We are dealing with a ton of variables on next season's team to try to predict what their performance might be HG but, I think there is the possibility of a strong rebound though it would take a minor miracle (with or without fantastic special effects ahaha) for us to actually nip into the play offs again. If I was forced to bet I would bet heavily against us being in the play offs next season. I think anywhere from 5 to 10 wins at most is a fair expectation for improvement over this season. If we have another train wreck of a season and wind up last again I think Grier will be hard pressed to keep his job though I like his plan and hope like hell we stick to the plan with him as our GM.
I think the casual, bandwagon barbarian fans are at the gate and are doing what the casual "fan" does. "Quinn sucks fire him! Grier sucks get rid of him! How much pressure can Hasso Platner withstand with the season ticket holders and the barbarians at the gate? I think Quinn was sacrificed to mollify the barbarians and it was undeserved. When I watched Mike Grier's press conference after the firing honestly, he looked very tired and I thought twice he almost broke down. He and Quinn are personnel friends and I think one was in the others wedding even?
Anyway, getting down from my soapbox HG and apologies for blathering on man but, as you can tell I talk too much and love the Sharks! Long live the HG!

That was a rough season to endure but I give them top marks for competing so well even in bad losses.
Certain players did well enough to attract notice and go to playoff-bound teams or at least to teams not in a full rebuild (New Jersey etc.) and in doing so the Sharks continue to stock their cupboard of draft picks. And there’s good young talent there already proving they are part of brighter future days; a few vets up front and on the back end couldn’t hurt as Vlasic etc. won’t be there but so many more years.
Little disappointed that Quinn was let go; I thought he handled last season’s turmoil rather well, calmly. I suppose they really want to reset fully in San Jose.

As a Sabres fan the sharks having nothing to worry about.
The Sharks could rebuild quicker than I think folks give em credit for. Clearing as much cap space as they have they could go for a Vegas style of trading futures and building around the few pillars in their core.
I think Buffalo/Anaheim have proven that rebuilding by developing your own core from the draft can present its own risk. Your team suffers from all this time spent on developing for players that can fizzle. If you trade prospects for proven/scouted NHLers in teams that are in tight cap spaces it can be lucrative with a quicker turn around.
