I have just discovered Jose Luis Merlin and I am hoping that I can learn his compositions and so far it seems feasible that I can learn and at the same time I can feed my soul.
Jose Luis Merlin is a personal friend of mine and all of my family.. I studied under him extensively starting ten years ago and have learned many of his compositions. He is a beautiful man and his music is absolutely tremendous. For those of you just learning about his music you are stumbling onto a true treasure of a man, composer, and performer. I never cared for flamenco guitarists until I discovered Merlín. He may have a flamenco style, but his music is very much in the great tradition of early 20th century Segovian art-music. The more modern influences only serve to make his pieces and his style more unique.
After consideration of so many other artists and pieces I keep coming back to this piece as the one I want to learn next. It expresses that dreamy mystery, depth and emotion of Evocacion but takes you to even more places that are textured with life and feeling. Like a long journey back through the wilderness, after realizing you never really wanted to leave. Much Gratitude for this.
Merlin has it all together-brilliant technique,massive musicianship and note articulation that is so beautiful.He has been here in New York a couple of times but I missed him since I had gigs at the same evenings.He should be better known .His Suite de Recuerdos is a juicy piece of work that is his most well known work.I just love this and his other videos as he demonstrates how to perform superb works of Latin American Origin. I hope to see more videos of this great artist!
