    stumbled on your page, I am from Kentucky too! I got a dwarf cavendish a month or so ago. it has new foliage but some of the older foliage is turning brown. What size pot should I have it in? does he need direct sunlight outside? so far i have him outside in direct sunlight on the porch. he has been getting all the rain that we have gotten lately. can he root rot?? I got it from an amish nursery house. it was already about 2ft tall. but it only has 3 nice green leaves & 2 brown/yellow leaves now. When I bring it inside do I have to have direct sunlight? I don't have many areas in the house that receive that

      So I have mine in a 10 or 12 in pot. People really buy citrus trees because they want the fruit. If you want yours to put forth a bunch of juicy fruit and flower then they need a decent amount of light, at least 6 hours or more of unobstructed light, they'll need a good amount of water and humidity too. I don't really wanter mine much with all this rain we've been getting lately. However if it hasn't rained in three days especially with temps being around the 90's-100's you should check on it. It's not uncommon to water them once a day or so when the temps get to a hundred +. Always check the soil too. If the top inch of the soil is dry you can probably add water. I put a nice layer of mulch over top my soil in the container it is in and that helps keep the soil around the roots moist. Yes they absolutely can get root rot, so be warned there is a fine line between too much of a good thing and not enough. Citrus trees don't really go dormant like other deciduous trees do. Life for them pretty much goes on as normal in the winter for them. I have a large grow light in my plant room that I keep my orchids and tropical plants under during the winter. Now that's not to say that they don't rest a bit. Citrus trees do NOT like the cold at all. They can survive maybe one or two days of freezing weather but when you get over that especially back to back they will die. Calamondin trees are a little bit more hardier. You'll definitely have to move yours indoor for the dormant months. If you don't have grow lights consider looking on Amazon, or you can check the links in my description box to get a link to the ones that I use. There have been some great advances in grow lights over the past 10 years. They make them pretty small and they're full spectrum and not that expensive to buy or to run. If you don't want to go that rout you could try and sit it in the brightest window in your home and just maybe that might be (highly unlikely) enough light to keep your tree happy. Kentucky winters don't get a good amount of sunlight for citrus trees. Also you'll need a humidifier. Our homes, especially in the winter tend to be bone dry. This will kill a citrus trees just about as fast as root rot will. You can buy a temperature and humidity monitor at lowes or home depot for about 12 bucks and it will tell you the temperature and humidity of a room. Citrus trees enjoy humidity around 45-50% to thrive. A humidifier really helped with mine. They're easy to clean too, just don't get one with a filter and clean them out with distilled white vinegar every week. Kentucky has very limestone rich hard water so I use distilled water in my humidifier. If you can send a some pictures of your plant to me on insta ytgreenalchemist or email me at ytgreenalchemist@gmail.com so I can see how your tree is doing.

    I recently purchased the dwarf banana cavendish plant from a local nursery...however it was potted in hydrogel soil which I am not used to handling...apparently this type of soil retains water for long periods of time which I’m sure this plant doesn’t like...should I remove the soil and repot the plant into normal soil? Or is it okay to just leave it as is? I’m abit scared to repot this plant 😅

  • @MultiSam247

    Hi was wondering if you could help me please as my dwarf cavendish roots are showing through the bottom of the pot, is it ok to repot when it winter or should I wait. Thanks

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому +1

      I would wait. You'll want your banana trees to go dormant during the winter months. This means to slow the watering down and store it in a cool dark place that won't dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I put mine in the garage, it's unheated. You only need to water once really well say about every three weeks. Soak the soil and let it dry out. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    I saw your calamodin orange video and I just got my first citrus plant a week ago, and I'm already noticing the leaves are folding and bite marks are apearing. I wondering if seven dust was safe to use on it?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому

      Seven is alright, it's been around for a bit and I've even used it before. Generally when you see bite marks on a citrus tree there is a decent chance that it may be a certain caterpillar/butterflie or moth that wreck havoc on citrus plants. Seven will correct some citrus pests but not all of them. Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacterium that produces a protein that messes with these pests as they eat. Monterey Bt will only work on said pets but will definitely kill these pets that you often can't see with the naked eye. It is a definite if you have citrus trees. The point I was trying to make is if seven isn't working try Monterey Bt.

      @@TheGreenAlchemist oh I forgot to say that this citrus tree was the same type as yours and it has five oranges on it, and I was wondering if the soil could be the all purpose mirical grow or just the cactus palm and citrus. Because I used all purpose when I first got it and besides the bite marks, it's doing pretty good. When I saw your video it made me worry a bit because I didn't use that type of mirical grow, I also have the plant in a five gallon Lowe's bucket because the plant is a foot tall and I wanted to make sure it had plenty of room to spred it's roots for when it grows bigger. please let me know if I'm doing this right I really need to be sure, thank you.

    I thought it was not ok to plant a small plant in a big pot. Is the dwarf banana tree an exception?

    • @PiecieRoneJones
      @PiecieRoneJones 2 роки тому

      It's mostly a problem because te soil stays wet longer. If your plant uses up a lot of water, or you water less frequently or less heavily, it can be done.

    • @serenitycarlos2
      @serenitycarlos2 2 роки тому

      Banana trees can grow to maturity within a year. General rule, yes small plant, small pot. But within year, this plant will drink 3 gallons of water a day. Each day. Fast growing, super thirsty plant.

    Help! I have a dwarf cavendish and I am having some issues. I just got it about 2 weeks ago. Directions said, to put in a pot the same size as root, which i've done. i don't overwater and it is in a sunny area but the leaves are slowly browning. what should I do?

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому +2

      So with some of these guys too much light, too little water or excessive cold/heat can stress them out causing the leaves to brown. Where do you have it sitting? Outside, inside, north/south orientation? Where did you buy it? Big box store, or nursery? What size is the container? How often do you water?

    • @HTJournals
      @HTJournals 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheGreenAlchemist thank you so much for responding. I live in ohio and it was shipped from a plant nursery in Florida 3 weeks ago called Top Tropicals. it came with a stick in the middle holding it upright, secured with rubber bands around the trunk. Once i realized the leaf was browning I cut he rubberbands off thinking at first that that might be the issue. One of the leaves is nearly all brown/dead, but the others are brown only at the tip. they seem to be slowly holding on, but the change in the other two came after the 1st leaf started yellowing so idk if they are going down too. I water once maybe twice a week, but i'm sure not to overwater. However when I first realized the browning of the leaf , i noticed a bit of water retaining in the center? not sure if that is from a delay in the rubberband cutting or what. it sits in a northeast facing window in a 10 quart planter, the size of the root ball. 3 days ago I noticed a new plant coming in from the center. it grows an inch everyday. so i'm confused on what is happening.

    • @Nikibaby74
      @Nikibaby74 4 роки тому +1

      It could have been from the stress of shipping. Plants mostly won’t show stress for a week or more, from the start of the problem, so it was probably a combination of things that could have started before you even got it. It’s growing new leaves so it sounds like it’s still healthy just has a bit of a shock. It should bounce back. Sounds like you are doing great but just keep your eye on it while it acclimates.
