The fact that Donny kept this to only about 7k pieces is amazing. The amount of gold metallic pieces would certainly bump up the price, but if offered as a retail set I would jump at this.
This isn't even a LEGO build anymore... It's straight up ART! Seriously, this thing is just incredible, and the techniques to pull this off are both simple yet genius in their design. This is museum quality stuff right here.
Don't think it's ever going to happen. Way too difficult to build. Way too many variables when placing the parts. Maybe Cobi or whatever dare to release it, but I am sure, Lego won't.
What's so great is that it is very elegant, not necessarily in the way that it looks, which is obviously elegant as well, but how the structure is engineered. It just makes sense!
that is how chinese dragons are depicted in their art for thousands of years. Their dragon isnt the dragon of power and destruction like western dragon. Their dragon signify authority power and wisdom and is revered as king amongst living creatures not feared.
all the unique bricks on the head - the egg, the dome inside, the plant beard- and he didn’t mention the golden bananas!!! this is BEAUTIFUL i love it,,,,
Some of the facial features are actually used in some of LEGO's modern dragon sets. For example the LEGO ninjago movie robot dragon set uses the same plant pieces for the whisters, the bananas around the eyes. And uses a similar technique with the bowl but with a lego mini fig head inside instead of an egg
So glad someone showed how this beautiful creation was made. I had zero clue when I first saw this on Reddit how it was even possible to pull off. What an impressive moc
I don't get how the rest of the interior works though. How did Donny Chen get the curves in the middle, and how did he join them to the rest of the interior.
What in the actual fuq.....I'm seeing it and yet my brain cannot comprehend how is this a real moc🤯 It's the most beautiful Lego creation bar none, and I know my Legos, I could type for day just the big technic sets I have in possession and I'm gen 84' so that's a 35y old hobby of mine. Dude....amazing build, I'm in love🥰
@@jg113 The Lego Eiffel tower model (10001 pieces) can be found here for €630. Now price per piece isn't constant, the eiffel tower is a lot of small pieces, compared to for instance the liebherr crawler crane with only 2883 pieces, and still setting you back €680 euro (although it can be found for much less, it has been sold for €410). If they'd produce this, I'd expect it to be in the ~€800 ballpark as its piece variation is significantly higher, but they're still a lot of small pieces.
I can never really justify much of a purchase from either BrickLink or Bricks and Pieces because I generally just don't know what I'd want to buy beyond something just to say that I have a few of them and maybe they'll be useful some time in the future, but with something like this, they definitely pay off. Everyone went hog wild on all the metallic gold parts on Bricks and Pieces when Monkie Kid first dropped and I laughed them all off as crazy, and if I saw that someone bought a few hundred of those Harry Potter rings and 2x4 rounded gold tiles, I'd also laugh them off as crazy, but clearly Donny Chen knows what's up. You'd have to do the same thing with all the clips and brackets, too, but I feel like those could reliably have been Pick-a-Brick Wall purchases (and a better price per part ratio) since they're smaller and less niche; certainly better than all the olive cheese people bought up 10 years ago (sheesh, it's already been 10 years?) that I'm sure still fill a whole bin of their collections and don't know what to do with.
I look at a MOC like this and that’s the part I can’t even wrap my head around: sourcing. Like I can at least start to comprehend the incredible design and engineering Donny brought to this, but when it comes to tracking down this many specialized pieces over what must have been many months on BrickLink… the logistics are just insane.
@@mortenjorck Bricks and Pieces from LEGO's website is a good way to get bulk parts for better prices than even BrickLink at times, certainly much more convenient than having a bunch of different prices across multiple stores (and international ones at that, which makes it worse) and at varying levels of condition. It may take some time to arrive, but if he had the basic design already done digitally, Danny can parse out what's going to be the best way to go about acquiring the parts, and I think Bricks and Pieces makes the most sense for the rings and tiles because nobody just buying sets for their inventory on BrickLink would ever have something like this unless they were also going to Bricks and Pieces.
That dragon is awesome... my only critique is that it would look a little better if it had a different color for the eyes. Other than that, it's perfection!
Absolutely beautiful and even more clever! Almost a shame that all that beautiful scale work is completely covering the sheer amount of ingenuity of the inner frame
I love this design and the really amazing design is the inner workings. I think this MOC would look even better with the ovoid shield. There are now large amounts of them because of some plant sets. However, they are not pearl gold. I would love to see this reskinned with them instead of the oblong tile. I think it would be much tighter and sleeker.
Great insight into it! The person who built this must be extremely lucky to even have the pieces to be able to do this, the listed parts list would be insane for this build I'm guessing. The amazing part to me is that from the outside perspective you are able to visually check which pieces are being used, its not some sort of weird half-piece sticking out amalgamation that is causing the finished and refined look.
Fan boy story time: Ben comes in to the restaurant I work at with another of our local Lego celebrities. Very wholesome dude. As they’re waiting on their meal I asked about this build wondering if they knew if this would ever become a set to be bought by the public. And proceeded to explain pieces of this very video that I’d seen two days earlier to the man who made it. Subscribed right at the table just for the interaction.
wow that is insane! MANY people would buy this as a set, but I must say adding all the scales would probably get boring haha. Beautiful sculpture that would display so well
I'm curious how the middle sections curve was achieved, it looks almost like the front and back thirds are solid and anchored, and the middle third uses ball joints to connect the two. Like a slinky dog toy almost.
I really love that design. The only itty bitty teensy weeny gripe i have, has to do with the color. I would've added a tiny splotch more color to the model, but that would be all. 9,95 out of 10.
This would be such an incredible Ideas set! Intricate and challenging with really unique building techniques (I might feel a little bad for whoever has to write the instruction manual though, lol)
And all we need now, is to convince LEGO or some other Companie to bring this as a Set, maybe with different Colortyps, i would love a combi with Jade Green or Azure Blue Main color and Gold belly
The thumbnail made me think of what animal of the year it is this year. It turns out that it is the year of the dragon this year so this video is very appropriate.
Very interesting! Thanks very much for the details. You have missing to explain the twist of the body in middle. The picture is to bad to understand the parts used.
I like how when someone like myself sees this they would think "oh, that dragon looks really cool". but if the hardcore look at it they're minds are blown
I would kill for this to be a commercial set Give it a dozen variations for colors, so i can mix, match, and customize patterns onto the scales I love dragons
The fact that Donny kept this to only about 7k pieces is amazing. The amount of gold metallic pieces would certainly bump up the price, but if offered as a retail set I would jump at this.
insane that it is so big for only 7k pieces. Without a license Lego could literally sell this for like $550 retail. MAD
Let’s see what other brick companies think of this.

I dont like hyperbole but this is hands down the greatest lego build I've ever seen and it's not close. Breathtaking
The downside is that the circles are (currently) very limited in size options right? So you can build a "tube" of a specific size and thats about it?
If I can only tell that it's lego if I look real close, then that's a fire set.
