- RedCat has pulled out all the stops on their latest generation of crawler, the Gen9! With a fully licensed (and darn good looking) Scout 800 topless body, and a host of upgrades to their chassis, it makes a compelling choice for your next RTR. Not free of problems (spoiler alert, I broke it), it does deliver on good looks and a working two-speed transmission. Watch for all the details!

Never would have considered a Redcat before. The Gen9 puts them on my radar despite not being in kit form.
I do soo love the fact I can only watch this in 360p unless I pay for UA-cam premium
That's not how UA-cam works. They compress 1080p more, but certainly not down to 360p. Check your internet connection!
I’ve gotta have one. Love me some IH vehicles
I have been looking forward to a new budget build off. This could be a good platform to do one with.
The Axe was one of the best RTR's to ever hit the Market with an electronics package you will never see in an RTR again, it forever raised the bar for RTR's. The Gen9 is a good looking truck but the Weird scale reminds me of the Axial 1/8 Bronco Body scaling oddities.
I have their 1/8 Marksman and I bet this truck visually would look good next to it.
I still own an original redcat gen8 axe edition, been thinking of selling it multiple times because I've had my fun with it but yes, we will probably never see an rtr crawler with those good of electronics again. And that's why I still have it, although it could use a rebuild.
@@HumphreyRCAdventure I have upgraded my ESC and Motor to the AXE FOC R2 2800kv, really nice because the R2 has a crawling mode and a trailing mode switchable by Bluetooth on the trail. Other than aluminum link connectors at the axles I haven't done any other serious mods to it. My most Scaled out rig for sure lots of extras and a scale winch on the Bull bar Bumper, a servo protector and some metal skids and that's about it. Moved the R1 AXE FOC to my Capra and it's a little BEAST 😈
I love my gen8 axe edition, I got the last one my lhs had and it’s amazing but I want that 2 speed lol
I still have my axe in the box, I need to get out more (too many other rc trucks and planes)
I recently bought a new scale crawler and it was a toss up of weather or not I should get this one or the Traxxas TRX4. I choose the TRX4 for the simple fact is that I can walk into every hobby shop in Utah buy the parts that I need if I was to break something and not have to wait for it to ship. Redcat on the other hand I can't walk into any one of my nearest hobby shops and buy the parts that I need I have to wait for Redcat to ship the part to me and I have to wait 2-3 business days for the part to arrive to me
Not even seen redcat here in the uk not even now in 2024
Dang! I actually want one lol. Going to do a beach comber for walking Lake Michigan
Very stout wheel combo on that bad boy
The “other” TRX4….!!
Looks like a worthy competitor. Redcat is obviously very serious.
Btw, the upper longer horizontal side stripes are IMO
hideous!
Fair enough, thanks for watching!
Since it's broke does it fall under the Why do I still have this category. Lol
😂
Looks awesome would look better in my collection
Buy Traxxas
Problem solved
never going to buy redcat gen anything hahaha
their bodies looks really bad, their axles looks toy grade. the tire looks ok
Fair enough, thanks for watching!
We need a RTR prerunner from Redcat👍😎
Great review! I have to preface this comment by saying I love red cat, that said this should not have broke like it did. Also when manufacturers are making something they need to take into account that it could be driven anywhere from Antarctica to Death Valley and design their parts accordingly, you shouldn't have to think about the outside temperature in order to drive your outside RC truck.
Very true!
Seems like Redcat is making steady forward progress. Still not at a level where I would feel comfortable recommending one, but they are definitely on the right track.
Perfect review as always. I think you showed exactly what to expect when you run a RTR Redcat over crawling speed. Be sure to keep plenty of link ends, or go aftermarket links entirely. The portals may help, but I imagine the all plastic trans gears will love lugging around a 8-9lb truck. Redcat has decent designs. They just need to use a better material for some of their components. I would much rather spend a little more for a RTR that I don`t break on the first bat. Perhaps I have some Redcat PTSD from an intoxicated impulse Wendigo purchase.🥳to🤯 Now that I have Vanquish money wrapped up in the truck it`s a decent rig. I understand they are released at a decent price point, but I don`t think it would add much cost to use more durable materials in a few key areas.
BINGO!! Could not have said it better myself!! I had one back in the day. WAY back and 20:40 is why I'll never have another one. Always broken. and the price of the new one? Yikes. I heard the wendigo had issues. It seemed no one would admit it. But there were lots of upgrade videos on it. lol
Slap some f10 straight axles on that badboy
It hit a rock in 2nd gear. That's how it broke. To be expected
Looks great, would like to see someone like Proline offer a hardtop for it. Seen other videos of parts breaking in freezing temperatures, not just this brand. Somebody's going to offer metal knuckles for those in the Arctic Circle.
Note to self : Don't let Chilly Willy the ding dong drive. 😆
No.. just no. Its still a redcat. I just can't. Buy a axial or vp. Redcat stick with lowriders
Even the crash looked awesome. The driving characteristics are pretty good. I’d say maybe one of the best driving trucks to come out in a while.
I own one they are great just really top heavy
oh wow....a Redcat breaking on the first run, gee thats a BIG surprise lol.....
Good for Redcat for continuing to make improvements. I really wish the body was closer to actual scale but I understand the reasoning.
Another 7th scale rig. Fits perfect between Axial Early Bronco and Element Bushido! I don't understand these strange trend!
14:02 - My Gen8 V1 has metal covers the same as these, maybe they added a couple more double shear points in its design, but same for the most-part.
I literally just got a Gen8 last week lol. Looks amazing, but because of the price I would still go with the 8. Are those headlight lenses the same size as the gen8? Cuz i need to swap the crystal clears to those.
Finally a cool looking redcat. To bad it's still a redcat, as shown in first run footage.
The more I enjoy crawlers and trail trucks, the more I realize we're aligned on what we don't want. More moving parts = more failure. I'm fine with single speed.
“They forgot to include Canada” I love it 😂😂
The body's scale is the only thing keeping me getting one.
Will probably track down the 2-speed and different portal gears when they come to market; and shove them in my gen8. Which has been amazing, got it as a V1 years ago, completely upgraded to V2, replaced body from just pure use.
It's my favorite truck in the fleet that just works.
First metal part on mine was the steering hubs, the plastic they use hates the cold; metal parts are a must with the weight; more so with that 2-speed it'd seem.
If a manufacturer is going to make a truck with a second gear then they should really make sure the truck can handle second gear speeds.!
I've broken so many steering knuckles on my Traction Hobby Cragsman, it's got the same problem.
Ah, you did fine Matt, I saw how Chilly Willy was wretching over the door, too much spiked egg nog. Don't drink and drive kids
The snowman figure is great👍😆
In addition i must say your videos are great to watch the music, camera shots and driving, very amusing to watch, i follow you and Josh and i don't even own a crawler or trail truck😁
Glad you like them! Maybe it's time to buy a crawler?
Just send me that broken down pile of goodness Matt, I’ll take it!! I’ll give you $300 for her
That is a very nice, scale appearing snowman! Well done!
Every review appears to have poor low speed control... The high gear/high speed is odd to me even for trailing. I believe the weight and high speed will doom this truck to be broken unless babied.
You broke steering link AND Frosty’s face. Frosty down!! 🤣😂😫🥴
The crash to end the cinematic section was kinda great for the video haha
That grill looks just like the Windigo grill so maybe there trying to save money so the price should be more in the 340 range.
Thanks for sharing Matt. I'm really impressed with this truck. Definitely a great improvement on G8 🇬🇧🇨🇦🕊️✌🏼🤟🏼
Thanks for watching!
You almost lost frosty and broke it already but living in the northeast my self things get brittle in the cold saying that Josh didn't brake his lol
That wasn’t that bad of a crash and the steering is broken? Dang snowman
When doing Anything RC, set your ENDPOINTS!
Owning two redcat crawlers you have to constantly be replacing and upgrading parts.
The harder plastics are more brittle of coarse but in the housings it helps maintain gear mesh and bearing performance.
They should have stuck with the v2 style housing and fitted a u joint style axle I have 2 gen 8s they have both crashed hard several times never broke and if it did you could get a brass one
I see that transmission being out of stock forever. Every gen8 owner going to be converting to a 2 speed.
Scale is kind of irrelevant since they base it off the RC chassis wheelbase which someone pulled out of thin air; and not the actual full size vehicle's wheelbase... I have been out on trails and rocks with some people with the Gen 8s and they would go anywhere far more expensive and larger name brand rigs would go. Also props to Redcat for not using a friggen Jeep or Toyota body.
Pretty solid review of the Gen 9 even with the broken part. Snow man should have had his seat belt on though.
I drove my bosses Scout pick-up a few times the 4- cylinder motor did its job every time.
y'all have a badass day \m/
🤘 You too!
Lol “Michigan close enough” 🤣 eh settle down buddy ahaha
tbh it looks like its always leaning to the drivers side because of the steering link design.
Fair enough. Thanks for watching!
The funny thing is the body looks just like the real one so they hit the mark. Only problem that model has never been a looker. But I believe it can be made to look mean & im sure it’s all business as far as it’s ability to crawl.
You may be the only one in the world that doesn’t like the look of a scout 800a.
I took a chance on Redcat and bought a Marksman T8. Mainly because it has an unlicensed Jeepster Commando body. It’s 1/8 very fun trail rig. Big thought but fun. I have been eyeing the Gen 8. The Redcat put a bunch of stuff on sale. I ordered a Gen 9. I’m more of a fan of the Gen 8 body. But reading all the improvements on the 9. Again as stated I ordered one.
Hope you enjoy it!
You could complete the video if you call for the TRX 6 tow truck.🤣
Did they change the frame to all metal instead of metal into plastic like the gen8?
I just found out 50% of Canada"s population actually lives below the 49th parallel so Yeah Michigan 😆 That's a lot of wilderness to Alaska 😮
You are correct sir! And don't forget about all of the Canadians living in Los Angeles! Hollywood would be a lot less funny place without us!
@@scalebuildersguild Absolutely !
Once I put some Treal on my AXE Rig, its been a brute.
Interesting. Josh beat the shit out of his and no breakage. You take a hard tumble wumble on a root and snap.
You're probably correct on the Plastics Mix.
It could also because it's a lot colder here!
@@scalebuildersguild cold causes plastic to break easier? What gobbledygook. Next ting you'll be telling us is brushless is more efficient than brushed. Lololol...
That’s a bummer, Yep I was here watching
Do you still have to remove the portals to get the shocks off, or did they change that?
I’d like to see you do your own artistic craftsmanship on the body and wheels. If redcat doesn’t automatically send you a new axle (I’m sure they will) these axles are quite cheap on Amazon. Heck I’ll even send you a set.
I just watched your motorcycle designs buddy's video. You guys are pretty top notch RC reviewers. I respect your work! Great knife, BTW. Did you make that?
Funny you should ask about the knife! I actually assembled it 😂.
At 20:02 Great Seatbelt awareness campaign screen shot.
Funny how the front lights look like a cat's eyes.
Notice Traxxas the clear non decal windows!
Im almost positive that redcat uses Dumbo radios.
That shi broke literally just trailing 🤣
It's to thick/tall looking....too "dumpy". Lights are too big also. Gen 8 looks way better.
Fair enough, thanks for watching!
Maybe some Axial or Traxxas parts will fit the weak Red Cat part . I put also Axial Capra parts on my Reely Free men 6x6 the Reely part was also weak at the same part than the G9 have.
There's not a lot of cross compatibility there, so I doubt it would work.
What a nice choice of music, fitting perfect to the trail/crawling session... but what a disappointing accident with bad consequences for the redcat. Maybe it's too heavy...
Maybe?
Does it have the bump steer like previous gens?
Typical redcat quality. I was really hoping they were making some improvements. When newcomers to the hobby buy a product like this, and it breaks on the first run, it's not a great start. It's less likely for them to stay in the hobby.
Fair enough!
The body reminds me a bit of the old axial dingo
This thing just looks ..... odd.
Fair enough, thanks for watching!
@@scalebuildersguild lol, honestly, I'm warming up to it..
Team Corally I bought a MoxxooSP it is brushed not real fast . But it is pretty tough I hit a few trees at low speed and found no damage to plastic parts. I am impressed with it $189.99 cost. H.R.P. sells them.
There was a message for me to contact you at SBG@text me 11xx ?
If only he was wearing his seatbelt instead of smoking and driving. lmao. THat was funny.
My gen 8 v2 fell about 15 feet on a steep boulder and hit solid ground, and didn't break. I would like to see the comparison between the gen 9 and the gen8 V2
i don't have a gen8, so you won't see it from me! Thanks for watching!
It may work great but looks horrible.
Who is the song by in the back ground?
I can tell you how it broke, RedCat makes cheap junk.
I have a redcat and I spend more time repairing it then I do running. It breaks within minutes of every single run.
😬
Blame the snow man's driving
Yikes I'm not sure about the Gen 9..
Love my Gen8 Axe although if I’d known how crap the aftermarket support is in the UK I wouldn’t of bothered 🤔
This on the other hand looks absolutely shite and no way I’d get one, WTF were Redcat thinking 😱
😬
19:51 cited for reckless driving lol nice
Canadian cold👌 break downs are common
Definitely won't be picking one up until they fix the knuckles, that was pretty weak for looking so stout. it di look like a hollow part though. Great review, and content like usual 🤙
Thanks for watching!
4:48 almost gave me a heart attack
Regardless of the temps etc. this is something you don’t see happen at all & definitely pauses my interest for now. I’d like to here from Redcat a response why this is! Bottom line not a good first look regardless of all the pluses. 🤨
🤷🏻♂️
Looks like they should have updated the Steering Knuckles as well...
What did say the Red Cat person that call you when you tell him you broke it badly? Today I receive a mail for pre order.. 😮
Things happen, he understood.
Thanks for the review it looks pretty good, but it still has the red cat reliability issues.
It’s like you drove it straight into that rock. 😂
Although I like putting a driver on the driver seat to complete the look, I can't help but think of the movie Weekend At Bernies
😂
Thats rig looks badass I would like to buy one an run it stock for a while an then put in the hobbywing axes 550 system in it
Is the body size comparable to that of the Axial early Bronco?
I knew I wasn't the only one that listens to "the last knife fighter"!
Waste Plastic. Traxxas rules!!!
Its pretty good but scout 800s have twin stick transfer cases and round side mirrors.
