How bad is the rust? Is it causing the lock to perform poorly (jamming, stiff to turn key, etc.?) Once stubborn rust is set in place, there isn’t a whole lot you’ll be able to do. You can attempt to scrub away the worst of the rust with a wire brush or similar, and then coat the effective parts with a lubricating sealant. But without the corrosion preventative layer in place, once the protective lubricant layer has reduced, the process of corrosion will begin again. If the lock is really badly rusty and didn’t cost a whole lot of money it may be worth investing in a new lock, otherwise if you can make do with its condition, ensure you keep that thing thoroughly clean and well lubricated! Hope this helps.
@@bikelockwiki Thanks. The key turns easy, maybe a slight stiff when turning, and for the most part like 8/10 you can unlock it easy. My guess is that the issue is with the bolts/and or the shackles. In terms of how bad the rust is, I would say low to medium.
@gipeon Just get a new U lock. Spray the bolts and lockinhg mechanism with a dry film lubricant first thing before using it. Then, every month, use a WD40 to degrease it in the same areas, wipe them, leave it overnight, then re-lubricate it again with said lubricant. That's it!
I can't find the ABUS lubricant, is there an alternative you would recommend?
My ulock's rusty, both on the shackles and the locking bolts. What would you recommend?

@@bikelockwiki btw Would you recommend WD40 to get rid of the rust?
