  • Planet E: Our Environment - Sustainable, eco-friendly, organic, green energy and climate-neutral mobility: what's behind it all? Is it just window dressing or innovative concepts? The environmental documentary series investigates, explores and provides facts.
    Planet E: Our Environment (2019)
    Genre: Documentary
    Country: Germany
    Language: English
    Synopsis:
0:00 - When Food gets Scarce
Rapid population growth, increasing urbanization, climate change and depleted soils - the production of our food is becoming an ever greater challenge. Are vertical farms a solution? In order to feed the world's growing population, agriculture will have to double its yields over the next 30 years. But arable land is scarce. Agriculture will therefore change drastically.
28:39 - Money by the Hectare - Europe's Billions for Agriculture
The EU spends as much money on nothing as it does on agriculture. Almost 60 billion euros every year. So far. But there is a threat of cuts. In environmental programs, of all things. The largest share of the agricultural billions has always been spent on direct payments to farmers. The amount depends primarily on the size of the agricultural land.
57:15 - Is Green Money Changing the World?
Money makes the world go round - climate activists know this well. A new generation of investors wants to force companies to behave in an environmentally friendly manner.
The green investment strategy: companies that operate ecologically are rewarded. Those who damage the climate are cut off. In this way, the once subordinate issue of the environment is increasingly becoming hard currency.
The motto of Antonis Schwarz, 30 years old, is: Cash against climate change. For many wealthy millennials like him, climate protection is the most important variable when it comes to investing money. They invest specifically in companies and projects that protect the environment. In his opinion, wealthy people have a special responsibility: "If you can change something and don't do it, then you are partly to blame. That's why we all need to do our utmost to avert the climate catastrophe." This is now the rule in the industry: What good is all that money if it's worthless at some point because you're living on a planet that's in total chaos?
Institutional investors have even more money at their disposal than wealthy private individuals. They too are slowly starting to rethink their approach - and not out of pure charity. Because climate change and the resulting extreme weather and environmental damage are jeopardizing their business: the fear of multi-billion write-downs is spreading.

Interesting how some countries which have banned single use plastics are being bullied into recinding this decision by countries championing sustainable/green investments 🤔
