Vampire: the Masquerade - Introduction to the Lore

- We're kicking off this lore series by discussing the hows and whys of White Wolf's vampires, comparing them to some common myths and explaining the general terms of their existence.
While this video won't go in-depth, it will cover multiple topics such as the Camarilla, the Embrace, Caine, the Sabbat, and so on. In future videos more time will be devoted to specific aspects of the Vampire: The Masquerade setting, so stick around!

As a newcomer to World of Darkness and VTM, this series is definitely a must-watch for anyone who's curious about it's lore and the history of each Vampire clan.

Thanks to some excellent feedback there's a few clarifications that need to be made.
1: I was flat wrong about the stake being made of everything; I don't know where this confusion came from; in every edition of VtM I've checked now it HAS to be specifically made out of wood. It doesn't have to be stake shaped per se, an arrow or a crossbow bolt is fine too, for example.
2: While the Sabbat don't care much for the Masquerade, most of the time they ensure to uphold it enough that they won't attract too much attention. The Sabbat generally tend to abandon their humanity pretty fast, and there's a dominating view that humans are inferior to them, but most of the Sabbat are not that stupid. I could have made this point clearer in my video.
Don't they refer to the Masquerade as the 'Silence of the Blood' or some such?
You could mention their Paths.
This is not too bad if you have at least seen the idea of impromptu stakings in other Stories or VTM Bloodlines.
Maybe one day their will be a tvshow truly faithful to the masquerade instead of what we got, which is tvshow that just pick a few things but are never anything like the masquerade.
Hahahaha, you don't like Kindred the Embraced? It was sooo good though! In a really corny, bad way! 😂
Kindred was good. It was a little awkward at first, but it was pretty good once it got going. Also, the first and only season was only 8 episodes long. There wasn't enough time to flesh it out and there were far more TV limitations than there are now.
I liked that tv series. It wasn't reflecting VtM perfectly, but it was better than what you can expect nowadays. Free of ideology.
This is an amazing introduction to WoD. I too have found researching it to be exploratory and I just can't get enough!

Yes, fellow 3rd edition neonate! This is the game that introduced me to the World of Darkness. I found it's bluntness with the lore amazingly attractive and it's what drew me in.

I had a chance to buy a 3rd book, but I didn't. Do I regret it now? Not so much. I have 2nd. ;)

I usually explain VTM's setting to new players as Frank Miller's Sin City with Vampires.

Well if they start as humans, or they're embraced not long ago, then why should they know the lore? I always kept such things from players and uncoverd it while running the game. This way players were learning lore with their characters. Which is natural, don't overwhelm with info and keeps game mysterious.

It's such a good game! I have issues getting a lot of the songs into my videos because they tend to be a little too intense as BGMs, but they're still mad bopping!

V5 does not make changes on the lore, especially history of vampires and sects. It just leaves it open to interpretation as far as vampires don't communicate that well between cities, so the story teller can freely take one of the stories, for example Seth and shift it freely the way they want to, to fit their setting. I am personally using a lot this as a tool, because I am story telling to a group of people totally unaware of the lore, so when they meet new sect and google all about it, it is fun to realize in our setting they are quite different.
But overall what I mean is, what you say coming from the source is 100% legit to all versions.

Using music from VtM:R. Love that choice. Sure the game is not like VtM at all but I still love it. Would have loved to do an online campaign with it.
Great video. I have two questions/points to make.
1) Where did you read that a stake does not need to be wooden to induce torpor? I thought that they definitely did. A strike to the heart with a non wooden object would cause massive blood loss but not torpor.
2) I think that the majority of Sabbat understand the importance of the masquerade.

You're absolutely right on the first one, somehow I misremembered and sloppily didn't bother to look it up. When I saw your question I thought it might've been a V20 thing, but even in the Revised edition they do point out that it needs to be wooden. Thanks for letting me know, I'll try to put in an annotation about it.
2. And yeah, this was more a statement I made to point out the difference between their different mindsets, my original script also mentioned the Sabbat wanting to lord it over mortals. I agree with you that they probably observe the Masquerade most of the time when they're not out in full force, but they're not as eager to hold on to their humanity, hence why I drew the conclusion that they don't care as much about it. I'll put a clarification into the video though, thanks again!
@@ThePrimogen bit late to the discussion but I swear there's something about the stake having to be Ash wood. I think it's because Ash is very flammable and causes a small flame in the heart.
@@Regnbuesolv I was looking into this and I think it's been mentioned in folklore, but I'm not sure it's a VtM thing. It's simply called "wooden stake" in most all the material I've read. I'll get back to you if I find something more though, thanks for the feedback! ^^

Question. How do you drink blood if you are devoid of blood. If you have no blood in your body wouldn't you be dead? How do you then drink the vampire blood? Serious Question, love VTM but just don't understand that particular point.
Even though the game was not the best, Masquerade Redemption had a great soundtrack.
