I'm local and net $1500 a week or so. When I did OTR I made about $1700 a week. For that $200 difference I'd rather sleep in my own bed. No more dealing with waiting 2-3 hours at the border, unpaid as well. Waiting many hours at shippers and recievers. OTR is only good if you're running long haul from Toronto to Florida, Louisiana, TX etc (solo). Regional Toronto > Chicago is BS. Might as well just be local at that point.
I go otr because I hate having only a small amount of time off consecutively. At my current company, they allow you to take months off if you’re willing to work enough time. I hear some guys stay out 9-10 months and take the rest of the year off.
Another factor. Health. Obesity, diabetes, heart condition. 3 most common health issues with long haul drivers. At one point, 62 was the average life expenstancy of a truck driver. To avoid these complications. One genetics, 1 in 5 people have diabetes, myself one of them. And need to take precautions to live a better life. Long haul not for them. 2 is stress. Inconsistent pay and expenses, and personal problems, will give some people a heart attack. Ever see an ambulance at a truck stop, or a big truck on the shoulder of the road? Or off the road? These are also factors to consider when being a long haul truck driver.
Ok but what about actual time home? I work Local with 12-14hr shifts. I'm barely awake for "normal" life. and when I am awake I am showering, eating, and getting ready for work. not much a life to raise kids. IMO a good middle ground would be regional work and be home every weekend. I'm currently waiting on a response from Walmart to be a regional driver for them.
I'm not sure I could handle running sixty hour (5x12 hour days) weeks as a local driver. You are basically never home, except on the weekends, which isn't much of an improvement over a long haul driver if you have a family, especially if you have any amount of a commute time to get to and from work. The commute 'home' as a long haul driver is about 3 seconds (climbing into the sleeper ;) When I was Over the Road, I lived in the truck. I ran continuously taking 36 hour resets as needed. My expenses were low (no rent), and I didn't have any dependents. Saved as much as I could. My last local driving job I worked 42 hours a week, running two nine and two twelve hour shifts. I'd start my week on Wednesday night at 9pm, and I'd be done my week at 9am Sunday, giving me three and a half days off to pursue other things. Friday and Saturday night shifts were the twelves.
I do long haul flatbedding and make about 1800-2000 a week when I was doing local I was making about 1250. This is as a new driver less then a year exp total. I'm home weekends and if I need another day or two my company is cool about it.
When I started career in trucking industry one of megacareers ask me about family , children and friends and explained if I want to save them - stay away from OTR. The truth is you never have enough money. To see how children grow is important moment in our lives. I don't have good examples OTR drivers with strong relationships with family, friends. At the present time, as a local WA driver, I see more beneficial to be local and pay by hours. Company very flexible with loads and I can drive 53 feet trailer or straight truck with GWV 26000 for same pay. If you really need extra money, you can work extra for weekends for different company. Just deal with management how much you cost and compare you price with job market. Don't sell yourself just for money.
Me and my buddy are talking about going in together on a truck I drive for a month then he drives for a month o.o. money split between two people is still pretty good and only working 6 months a year can't beat that home time
