- CNN anchors Erica Hill and Christine Romans and CNN business correspondent Rahel Solomon share their thoughts about the firing of Canadian TV news anchor Lisa LaFlamme after she claimed she was ousted because she let her hair go gray.
#CNN #News
The guy who fired her,
who is the head of CTV news, is now on leave. The first reason that was given was that he wanted to spend more time with his family but it then came out that CTV is doing an internal investigation on how the newsroom has been treated. Hopefully this guy gers fired.
Isn't his "leave" interesting and the timing too. I hope he gets fired, relieved of the perks and bonuses he has been accustomed to.
Amazing how many politicians and business execs suddenly want to spend more time with family after doing something incredibly stupid.
He is the fall guy, it goes higher in the ladder then him.
Someone will be thrown away under the bus, but it is wrong to think one person is responsible for this situation. It is a manifestation of widespread cultural bias. It's an opportunity for us all to question ourselves and agree to progress.
Spend time with family almost always means some big trouble in the background.
As a Canadian, I respect Ms LaFlamme's professionalism, grace, dignity, sense of style, intelligence, empathy, etc & looked forward to her experienced journalism frequently. This is just straight-up ageism, gender-bias BS. I hope Bell goes into the gutter for this. Horrendous way to treat an icon of Canadian media. She is missed & always respected. Thank-You, Ms LaFlamme.
Would’ve been great to see male on-camera co-workers don colorful mullet wigs or beaded corn-rows… and deliver news without referencing it and serious, over-the-top delivery like Ted character on old MTM show (news mgr. Lou Grant).
at 58 she looks fantastic
@@James-to7pi I'm "older" than you are and I do not think of myself as "old". Certainly not elderly.
But now I'm not too forthcoming about my actual age. I don't want to put myself in an ageist box.

@@James-to7pi , found the misogynistic sexist!
She literally just won the Newscaster of the Year award at the Canadian Screen Awards (Canada's version of the Emmy's), was awarded the Order of Canada (the highest honor a civilian can be awarded) and is widely seen as, arguably, North America's most credible journalist. YOU DON'T FIRE THOSE PEOPLE. They fired her, at 58, SOLELY because she refused to dye her hair back to being brunette. And the guy who is in charge of CTV News (which is owned by Bell Media), Michael Melling, has a history of rampant sexism, ageism (when it comes to women) and misogyny, during his career at multiple outlets. He despises strong women who stand up for themselves. Literally every single journalist and newscaster at the various CTV networks, and other Bell Media TV networks signed a letter of No Confidence against Michael Melling after Lisa LaFlamme was wrongly terminated. Every single talking point Bell Media has put out since her Twitter video went viral has been completely debunked.
there is a double standard: massive body positivity for women, but normalized body shaming for men
As a Canadian, Thank you @CNN for reporting this on a larger scale. We as Canadians respect and support Lisa LaFlamme.

My friends and I were so impressed with Lisa when she started to let her hair go grey during the pandemic. We felt she was showing the rest of us who had limited access to hairdressers to get hair cuts and colours. I watched her news cast every night. She was an excellent news caster and has covered major stories for years. Her grey hair is beautiful and Bell has made a very bad decision. She is the best newscaster that CTV has. I haven’t watched the CTV National News since her firing!
unless you are looking to date someone, why would you be worried about your hair turning gray "...felt she was showing the rest of us who had limited access to hairdressers to get hair cuts and colours. ..." really?
SAME! While I still watch CTV for their tv shows I have yet to tune in to watch CTV NEWS since Lisa left. I feel bad for her younger male replacement, Omar Sachedina, as I would like to think that he did not take part in the firing of Lisa. However, with him being her replacement he ends up sufferings (in part) with the decisions that his employer made. And to think that she had to keep quiet about her being fired until it was time for her employers to officially let her go... SHAME!

Yes I like my grey hair with silver highlights. I receive many compliments from people &, they say it does not make me look any older I believe this situation is about much more than grey hair
This is not the first time I heard something like this. My penpal, yes penpal since over 20 years, we got the opportunity to meet and exchange houses for the second time. So she was a secretary for a Hugh multinational and she were told what to wear and to never change her hair color( which she is blond) she said that she'd gained a few pounds which was noticeable and they change her from front desk to the back. They are very smart so they did not say it with words but actions. She said a manager ask her how old she was, she said 37 and she said the manager ask her if she is considering a little something on her first rides. Oneday, she left the job crying and I didn't heard from her for over 3 months. When she called me, she was so depressed. I said to her come spend a week r so with my family. When I heard what she was going through it was tough. Her husband press charges and they were found guilty . It's hard to be a woman and when wed women bosses, it's even harder.
As a Canadian, at the end of the day, I care far more about what's between the ears and what comes out of the mouth of folks I get my news from, than what I'm looking at on the screen. Lisa LaFlamme and the rest of us deserved SO MUCH BETTER. 😣
She was let go because she was older and the media is moving younger. Simple as that. I got laid off after 39 years, it’s not fair but these things happen! I took it a lot better than Lisa is! 🤷🏻♂️

He is actually right about the grey hair for men. I worked in a leadership position in an volunteer organisation. When I started growing grey in my beard during the pandemic I kept getting compliments about looking more mature. The minute shaved it I started geting comments that I looked too young. Ironically, I was pushed in the position because of my youthfulness. This world is too superficial and corporations aren't any better.
I think it is mainly the corporations. They make all sorts of assumptions about people, based on their own superificiality and shortsightedness.
Help me out. Doesn't this prove there isn't a double standard? They want the men to look a certain, like they want the women to look a certain way. Every thing is about attractiveness. Men are attracted young, fit women, and women are attracted to men of high status.
But you don't want to be the oldest looking guy on the team. Best to dye a little bit so you are not all grey.

Ty for covering this. As a Canadian I am so ashamed of Bell for doing this.
I’m Canadian and I can’t even begin to describe the outrage myself and my fellow Canadians are feeling over this.
Lisa is an incredible news anchor and always does a fantastic job reporting the news without sensationalizing it.
To Canadians, her voice reporting the news is much like David Attenborough doing the narration for nature documentaries, it’s just so familiar and trusted.
I’m beyond angry and hurt for her, this was absolutely despicable. ☹️
We love you, Lisa! ♥️ 🇨🇦 💪
Gray is ugly
As a Canadian, I completely agree. Lisa is fantastic, and a trusted source. She’s a highly intelligent anchor who is recognized nation wide.
If getting rid of her was a business decision, then it was a decision they could have made with previous anchor Lloyd Robertson. Instead, he worked till his 70s, and was given an on-the-air send off when he retired.
Lisa was just canned without fanfare and was asked to keep it quiet. All the double standards and inconsistencies in Bell Media decisions point to the fact they removed her because she wasn’t “eye-candy” enough for their tastes, and the insecure business boys projected their opinions onto everyone else (“if we don’t like grey hair, then our viewers don’t like grey hair”).
It's a good thing she wasn't a meteorologist for a US news station. I am in metro Atlanta and it appears a trend for the last few years at our local stations is to see which female meteorologist has the most nightclub-appropriate, barely-there, short at the bottom-plunging at the top dress attire to give the 6pm weather report. 0

The overuse of young attractive women at the expense of older women is stupid. I get that being attractive impacts likability, but that’s something the industry needs to bite the bullet on and get over. Exclusion of older women just robs the public of seeing women with gravitas, so it never becomes normalized. It’s just the experienced knowledgeable man everyone knows and a rotation of “pretty young things” whom are put in a disadvantageous situation to the man they sit next to.
That’s not even including that it puts a pressure on women to hide their natural looks. You shouldn’t be made to feel shame for your natural aging.
Just think of Don Henley's song Dirty Laundry, which he wrote in the 80's,but still applies today about how image is everything over content. The lines The Bubble Headed bleached blonde comes on at five, tells you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye",refers to her looks over the actual horror of a plane crash.Just look at FOX to see their harum of blonde bimbos they call reporters.

A very powerful female journalist loses her job that she's had for 35 years, has plenty of accolades for her work and is replaced by a 40 year old man? How suspicious is that? It's very suspicious.
And you can't tell me that the higher ups didn't think that this would cause any blowback and controversy.
I think advertisers are still living in a world where men were the ones responsible for all the buying decisions (except for food) that families make. That has changed big time. I mean, I don't think I have made a decision about a major buy in 20 years. Not the cars we own, not the home we live in, not even the animal we have as a pet. I mean, my wife has opinions........ get over it. It's a new world and women have brains......
There is no men organisation that force women, If you accept what these businesses demand or try force you then they will make it a company policy.
I'd argue that looks are essential to both men and women, if you want to sell them something using a person. This decision would probably have a larger effect on women,. simply because women identify with women. Shouldn't we have a similar discussion why everyone on the panel have symmetrical faces, look fit and over 30 yo? This is corporate feminism at its finest.
@Real Aiglon Be gone troll.
Still it comes down to LL being bias and her huge contract;the hair colour is a”grey herring “
@Real Aiglon Of all the concerns, that's the one you have?
I'm Canadian, and Lisa was the best anchor. I can't think of any other reason for her losing her anchor position other than ageism.
I can imagine other reasons but none of them are good enough to not give her a graceful exit.
She looks AMAZING!
No Lisa lost her job due to an insecure petty little man feeling intimidated by her and the publics appreciation of her!
IKR labeled the viewer and paying sponsor - What an abomination!
*No one should ever be fired for having gray hair.*
What about all the invisible older women who are treated like disposable people by everyone from grocery clerks to doctors! Some light needs to shine on that one! Especially the difference in how older rich women and older poor women are treated. Remember this: every single person who treats older people with disrespect assure their own fate.
Western culture -- especially advertising and social media -- have implanted the image of gray=old=no longer vital. Stop patronizing companies and media who do not show people with gray hair as active, alert, engaging, accomplished and influential.
There was a time where that woman probably got ALL the attention and the benefits of being young and attractive. Nothing lasts forever.
How are the grocery store clerks treating them as disposable? Seriously? they refuse service? I doubt it.
Probably whatever horny kids work there pay more attention to young women sure, but it's not like older women are refused service in the supermarket lol.
Lisa LaFlamme was treated horribly, she is an amazing anchor. That someone so good at her job and so well loved was let go in order to hire a younger, much less experienced minority male is reprehensible. As it should, this is backfiring in so many ways on Bell Media. Now the stories of how they treat employees who are not at the top of the food chain are starting to come out.
Bell Media: 'Let's Talk'. Freak'n Rubes.
Shocking story about Canadian media.
Older workers get fired all the time.
_Where's the proof_ that this was done 'to make room for a' minority.
Sure the old grey haired dolly has some coin
@@brianmouland209 what on earth does that have to do with anything?
If she can prove age discrimination then she can sue.
Gray looks great on her
This is crazy …as for as looks are concerned she’s stunning. She’s an amazing journalist.
i love my grey hair! more representation of grey hair in all sorts of media is needed.
She’s beautiful
I'm Canadian. If Lisa LaFlamme has been fired because of her looks, then that is shameful. Clearly she has not been fired because of job performance, and Bell Media has not given any other reason. But I'm a bit miffed with the media coverage in general, with everyone saying "She looks fantastic". That may indeed be true, but it is nothing but a perpetuation of the (double) standard that women must be sexy/attractive/pretty to have worth.
You are so right. We cant all look like her but we have to celebrate we are still alive, contributing to our society.
There is much more to this story. Her hair color is just cover for the real story. She stood up to a Bell Media exec.
About the job and working conditions. That pissed him off and he fired her. Her looks and hair were just an excuse.
@@James-to7pi Even if you are ok with that, you shouldn't be. She's a newscaster, not a car model. If 75 year old Mansbridge and Robertson can do the job, so can she.
The man who fired her is now rightfully on leave "to spend more time with his family." The company has heard the fury of Candadian woman, and I am glad to count myself as one. We will not be marginalized, and we wil not accept being told that women who are our age are not worthy of prominent positions in media. We vote with our wallets, and we will be heard.
Her hair is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! If my hair looked like hers, I wouldn't change it either! When mine goes grey, I hope it is half as gorgeous as hers is.
It’s not just a double standard in that industry, it’s a double standard in life. Women are treated as decorations first and people second.
@Sara Mill none. UA-cam comments are the closest I come to social media. I gave up the rest about 4 years ago because I no longer enjoyed it.
@Sara Mill Stop being a troll.
It’s crazy this lady has been a news icon for 2 decades and a lovely fair professional who has shown incredible objectivity in her line of work, which can be difficult in a left leaning country like Canada it’s really unfair .
Age discrimination! It happens, even if you are at the top of your game. It's not fair. People need to realize that we are like vessels. The more you get filled with knowledge and experience, the wiser you become. We are all going to get older. That's life, but we should still be able to contribute our expertise or whatever we can give.
A couple of years ago, my 22 yr old daughter away at university paid 3 figures to have her hair colored to literally have the same gorgeous color of gray as this anchor.
I have to say as a Canadian.. I’m so disgusted with this! It’s not part of Canada especially the way we celebrate everything else.. where or WHOM came up with this A MAN!? Or another WOMEN?! This is the way society wants to be? Putting women back in the Kitchen!? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN WITHOUT A FIGHT!
I have watched Ms. LaFlamme for years, as well as many of the other Canadian anchors over the years (Peter Mansbridge and Nolton Nash to name a couple of the most respected male anchors over the years). Many of the most respected news anchors in Canada over the years have been males and have been able to perform the job well into their elder years. When I see Ms. LaFlamme on the news, I know I am getting news from a source I respect because of her breath of knowledge, her experience in reporting and interviewing and her natural dignified and professional demeanor. All the highly respected Canadian news anchors have been able to go gray and in some cases BALD. Why can't Ms. LaFlamme? Not to mention, she has always looked terrific and gray hair looks beautiful for her. I hope she gets a great job somewhere. She deserves it and news organizations desperately NEED someone like her, given what she would bring to the table.

los mortales abian apreciado tan hermosa mujer
Agreed - as one of the most talented and capable newscasters in Canada, I think Global or CBC would be wise to hire her and put her back on the air. She may have some sort of non-compete clause currently (that's kind of common) but like several high profile US newscasters who switched, she should too.
Fascinating how men are not expected to look forever young, in all public roles, yet a woman gets mothballed as soon as signs of maturity appear.
This is exactly why I'm letting my grey hair out. I will probably never dye it again.
No one cares ... thanks
@@jrey6186 Incorrect, we do.
@@jrey6186 You cared enough to comment doorknob.
Bring Lisa back to the anchor desk. Fire the guy who fired her stat!
Age Discrimination!!!! Sue the pants off of them…
Stopped coloring my hair this year ... have a center gray stripe and each day I embrace it even more. True talk - it was a step that I had to learn to accept... why? Because of how I thought I'd be perceived in the public. That wore off. And here's the thing, my 60-year-old husband fights gray daily... constantly coloring his blond hair... and I'm 11 years younger than him and I've embraced it.
As a Canadian I can tell y'all, Lisa LaFlamme is definitely one of the more distinguished journalists in Canada, she's always done a fantastic job covering major news events, and for some schmuck behind the curtains to say 'Her hair's goin' too gray, get rid of her' is flat out scandalous. And dumb. THAT'S a reason for somebody to lose their job now? Their hair is 'too gray'? Friggin' foolishness. Lisa LaFlamme deserved way better.
It's not just your business. I got lowlights in my hair until I retired to avoid age discrimination; all the women I worked with in management or higher did. The men didn't.
Once I stopped coloring my hair, people started calling me "sweetie" in places like doctor's offices, etc. I'm not making this up.
Yup! For females, gray hair in the workplace is career suicide, unless you're working for AARP.
As a 67 year old I actually find grey hair on women my age more attractive than a dye jon
@@brianmouland209 In the work arena, it's not about being attractive, it's about keeping your job and/or your title level.

🇨🇦 CityNews in Toronto has just made a SMART quick decision and hired the superb, award-winning Lisa Laflamme to cover the death of Queen Elizabeth in the UK. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think she looks really good with gray hair! Celebrate her! 😃
Lisa looks great gray - good for her !
Lately I've noticed some newswomen are wearing skintight dresses, hair extensions (guessing), eyelashes fake, eyebrows fake, and I think they look ridiculous (and I'm a woman). This woman's hair is gorgeous grey!
As a Canadian, I am glad to see that cnn is covering this story
Cool your country have no REAL issues?

yep that'll be a game changer lol
She's a foxy lady!
Gray is good! And wrinkles are too! 100% serious here, rather not have young models for ALL news, tv, or movies!
A person with grey hair looks too experienced and wise...
God forbid someone should be wise...LOL!!!
Bell Media firing an experienced and venerated female anchor because of how she "looks" ???? That is crazy. Bell Media should keep their hands off a legitimate news program.
LaFlamme still looks stunning even with gray hair! I hope someone else snatches her up! It'll be their loss!
'stunning' may be a bit overenthusiastic - after all she's got more than a few 'coats' on - going outside paint, studio paint/putty ...
Men going grey look “distinguished” women going grey “look old”. It’s a fact and sad 😢
It's a fact people think that but it's not a fact that's it's true though.Old men look nasty.
As a Canadian woman I will not watch CTV as I am a gray haired lady and I would not want to infect the "audience" with my age and looks as it is clear CTV is for the younger ladies.
Umm, she's a beautiful woman WITH great hair. And that does not change her intelligence. What the what?!?
A lot of us let our hair go gray during the pandemic, get with the times Bell Media. Whoever decided to fire her is probably still uncomfortable that French news presenters are allowed to use their own accents nowadays.
There is so much discrimination against women in the workplace. It really isn’t funny. We need more legislation to protect all women in the workplace.
At 39, I am mostly grey. I don't give af what anyone says. I still have a fairly young looking face. I am just not going to color my hair for anyone! It's lived experience whether good or bad. You can't claim to love someone and then ask them to change for you.
Lisa Laflamme is amazing. She is relevant and beautiful and she represents so many women who have decided to embrace our natural beauty. She deserved to be treated better ✨️ Peter Mansbridge was bald!! Damn right there is a double standard.
100%
The people at the top of Bell Media should be ashamed of themselves for even going through with that decision. Lisa has been among the greats of journalism in Canada for decades. She rightfully earned that status and she does great in grey. I never thought for one moment that such silly decision can take place in my country until it smacked just like that. Shameful.
Stay strong, Lisa. Support from Montreal QC.
Her grey hair is lovely.
We live in a nasty culture of pretenders

To be fair, Lisa LaFlamme didn’t explicitly say it was because of the colour of her hair. She certainly implied it but it was only after her departure that things started to surface about why she was let go. We love Lisa and she deserves to be treated much better then this. Canadians are behind her 100%!!
