I'm in TX where the summer heat puts everything in a slump. Malabar spinach is great. It reseeds every year.
Okra grows great in TX.
I needed this. Yall have more heat like my area of California. There's only so many peppers and tomatoes one family can handle, lol

EGGPLANT in Phoenix! ...Our eggplant seeds got thrown into unfertilized dirt, just under our stonescape next to the wall. The plant grew with a drip tube on it. We ultimately yanked the plant out completely and capped off the drip tube to make room for a shed that hasn't been built yet....and this Spring the plant came back more massive than ever and way more purple babies!! We put the drip tube back on. So it's good to know eggplants are hearty here!! Your plants look amazing. We are inspired!

I love your channel! We are leaving Alaska after 21 years and buying in Willcox. I cannot wait to grow all the things. I have been fairly limited here Zone 2-3 some years we get away with zone 4. So, Arizona is going to be a wonderful change. I grow Stupice tomatoes up here and tomatillos! Glad to see you growing them!

I love growing nasturtiums, in my area they are more of a winter and spring crop because our summers get so hot.

@@GrowingInTheGarden I’m in Florida, it’s already in the 80’s here. Very hot and humid. I just planted nasturtiums from seed. I’m worried it’s going to be too hot for them by the time they’re supposed to bloom. I’ve never grown them before.
They did well for me in Colorado with afternoon shade and moisture.
I was told to plant corn against north wall and when ready to pollinate do it by hand, using a small paintbrush get pollen then open up the corn husk carefully and dust gently with pollen. Corn must be planted in rows not blocks... lots of sun, water soil only, not the stalks. ☀️
I live in an srea with the same arid heat as AZ. I have been successful with corn. My tips are to plant as early as possible and choose one of the shortest maturing days. This year my corn will mature in 72 days. I usually plant a couple weeks after last frost date. Checking for soil temp to be at least 50°. I also hand pollinate. I do not open up the husk just shake the tassels on corn silk. I plant in blocks of 4 rows wide and 12 feet long.
I also fertilized with organic fert. once weekly, and at the end, a couple weeks before harvest, I had to use shade cloth because it was getting sunburned.

Thanks for an informative video. My favorite 3 tomatoes are Italian Heirlooms, a large type, Cherokee Purples and a small salad tomato called Matina that grows in huge clusters with an old timey acidic flavor. Zone 8 in NC. We have had 90 degree heat this year and mega humidity.

Oh Malibar Spinach! On my list. This year I planted Asian Imperial spinach which is heat tolerant also apparently.

Gardening in hot , dry climates is certainly different. Knowing when to plant is crucial for success.
Tempe resident. I tend to focus on fruit trees but I’m enjoying your videos. I’ve never been successful with corn either. Glad I’m not alone. I hope yours is productive this year. I have planted roselle and Malabar spinach in a few years. I think I’m going to plant some. I need to include flowers more in my garden. The bees love my citrus and my tomatoes are in the “flight path” so they get some attention as well. Your garden is lush and lovely.

Living in a desert state is so hard to differentiate which plants and when to plant crops. Your video sure helps me a lot! Because I am a still learning to gardening as well. I've tried in the pass soany plants that just never live lol. This year I got Banana pepper, Tomatillo, Bell peppers, Green onions, andJalapenos even 2 fruits each I am happy lol. I have Asian basil and White basil all year around they do great in direct heat I just have to water it daily lots of it.This fall no more Bell peppers as they DO NOT do well. Will try strawberry etc. I can't wait!

What a lovely garden! We live in AZ too, and grow corn successfully every year.
Tips:
1. corn must be able to cross pollinate. Planting corn 12" apart and 1" deep is just the start. The corn rows must be 30-36" apart.
2. Corn prefers to have water on its leaves, so an overhead sprinkler type might be best.
3. Corn needs lots of light.
I noticed your corn is in a grid, but rows may be too close together. Try planting a row, alternating with some shade loving plants. End with corn.
I had so many tomatillos with just one plant I was shocked

I love home grown tomatoes, and in Massachusetts grew more than I could eat most years. Now I live in Arizona and every tomato plant I transplant either to my garden, or larger pot, just dies instantly! I can't figure it out. I tried watering more, watering less, direct sun, partial sun, fertilizer, potting soil, compost, everything. It's so discouraging.
On the other hand, kale and Broccoli grow amazingly well all winter long.
WOW! Thankfully I found you. I’m so frustrated with our raised beds. We have a greenhouse too with very little in it because it gets so hot in their. It’s so sad. I’m going to follow your directions though! Feeling more optimistic. Thank you!

Very happy I found this channel. I suck at gardening, but the things I breed and raise requires fruit and veggies/leafy greens year round. Hard part is knowing where to look.
So far, potato plants and ryegrass are all I haven't killed yet. There's spikeless cactus pads I planted recently as well, but I have no clue if they're thriving or dieing

New sub here. Love your channel and this video is great. It is in my saved column, for sure. I live in the Salt Lake area and one of the heat lovers I plant is New Zealand Spinach. It tastes good, comes on when real spinach has bolted, and loves the heat.

I have some iitoi onions that I planted last fall. I have been enjoying the green tops all winter, but they seem to be dying now. I want to save some and plant them in the fall like your blog says. I was wondering if I am supposed to cut off the green tops before I cure them in a shady dry area.

Thanks. No, don't cut them off. They will just kind of shrivel up and fall off when they are dry. Let all that energy from them go into the onion. Good question, and thanks for watching!

I don’t all that you’re growing but I have New Hanover ground cherries also!! My leaves are so small compared to yours. But it has a ton of lanterns! So excited as I just recently tried it for the first time after buying my seeds. So glad I actually like them. Lol I actually have 2 varieties growing, the New Hanover that I bought and the other is from the fresh berries I bought from the store called golden berries, it’s the Peruviana variety, that grows straight up and the fruits are larger then New Hanover. New Hanover fruits soo early where the Peruviana is just starting to put out flowers.
They have such a unique flavor and are so fun to grow. Best of luck to you.

Just dry the flowers and in summer just put some in water overnight in the morning just drain everything put some sugar go to the fridge and u have a healthy drink

Ive love your videos Angela, especially the ones on the hot weather trellising plants. I like the ideas of flowers in with my vegggies. I know that marigolds are suppose to ward of certain pest... but Ive got wicking tubs for grow spaces and when I watered from the top IN a wicking bed, it was too much water for my plant. It seems I cant have both for now. Any resolution ideas?

Hi. I just came across your video. My wife and I put a small garden for the first time. We're in surprise az. Last May, we planted about 5 tomatoes plants, four peppers and few herbs. Obviously we are new doing this and trying to learn as much possible. Its Aug and we lost almost all our tomatoes plants. Can u please give us few ideas on how to keep the plants alive with this 100+ degrees. Thx

I moved to Phoenix from Portland Oregon back in 2012. Gardening scares me because I have killed a few plants when I thought I was trying hard not to. I probably over watered or stressed the plant out with my neurotic tendencies...So I dabbled years ago and was beginning to have a little success in Oregon and haven't even tried here but now I am ready. My yard is standard size and being taken over by puncture vine so if you have any advice, please!! Other than that, it's a clean empty slate. I am glad I found your channel and am hoping you can help turn my black thumb of death green!

what kind of Sunflowers do you plant?? I live in South Texas and it is very hot here too but at least we get some humidity.
I plant a lot of mammoth sunflowers and also some from a multi-branching variety I harvested off the side of the road years ago. I save the seeds each year and it also reseeds. I'm not sure of the variety.

Great video! Despite my best efforts, my spaghetti squash here in Ahwatukee is burning to a crisp in this 116+ degree weather. My herbs seem to be doing fine, though - rosemary, basil, thyme, sage, and both Greek and Italian oregano. For some reason, cilantro just isn't making it.

I tried growing corn for the first time last year, but they just didn’t pollinate. I decided to plant winter squash this year instead.
My corn pollination has definitely been hit or miss. Which types of winter squash do you like to grow?

Surely your not talking about southeast Texas heat ? Over 100 degrees here with no rain in over 2 months. My corn burned up. My long beans look like snake skins . My tomatoes burned up . Okra produced about 6 fruit.

I have been trying to grow squash and pumpkins for two years now. Squash bugs have invaded and I'm so bummed my plants keep dying. I'm hoping several applications of beneficial nematodes this fall and spring will help. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.
I’ve only been semi sucsefull in the years I’ve lived in Az. I am looking to do a raised bed and have been looking into the SIPs system of watering. Watering has been my down fall. do you have any knowledge of SIPs. Also I live in Sun City and we have quail, I can keep out the rabbits, but will quail be a problem where I need to enclose the garden area. Thanks for the videos, they encourage me to keep trying.
Seems like it would be an effective way to water. I don't have much experience with it however. Barrier methods seem to be the most effective for birds. Best of luck to you!

You have such a beautiful garden full of veggies. If I may ask what do you use to control Rolly Pollies aka pill bugs???? They seem to eat my baby plants at the stems. Good question, I struggle with them too. If an a bed is badly affected, then I plant older plants there rather than young seedlings or seeds. I also wrap young stems in newspaper and do the tip I demonstrate in this video. ua-cam.com/video/C3xBP45ZAyY/v-deo.html.

I put three pots around a newly planted squash last night and this morning a million pill bugs were there. I stupidly just knocked them back off into the garden. They will be trashed from now on. Such great videos. Still watching.

Hello 👋 , how do you keep bugs off ur garden and not eat your leaves ?
I'm Northwest AZ and it is hotter here in summer. I started my mammoth sunflowers in pots in Dec., transplanted in backyard in late January. It seemed to grow five inches a night and got too about 5ft. With beautiful flowers. Now since the 90-100 degrees, the petals have curled and the leaves droopy even with watering every day. Any ideas on saving them, or too late? The hole dug was three times the size of transplant, compost, garden soil and fertilized.
Best to directly sow - then they grow in place. They tolerate poor soil but don't transplant well.
