  • Recently we came across this beautiful Ferrari 308 GTB 1980 at The Gallery in Brummen, The Netherlands. We took the car for a little spin! We love to hear your comments on our videos. Feel free to leave one!

The Ferrari 308 GTB (and similar 208 and later 328) are mid-engined sports cars manufactured by the Italian company Ferrari in the 1970s-1980s. They made up the lower end of the company's range. The 308 replaced the Dino 246 in 1975 and was updated as the 328 in 1985.
The Pininfarina-styled 308 GTB was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 as a supplement to the Bertone-shaped Dino 308 GT4 and a replacement for the Dino 246. It was designed by Leonardo Fioravanti who had been responsible for some of Ferrari's most celebrated shapes to date such as the Daytona, the Dino and the Berlinetta Boxer. The 308 used elements of these shapes to create something very much in contrast with the angular GT4 2+2. The GTB/GTS was a 2-seater with sweeping curves and aggressive lines, and has become one of the more recognizable and iconic cars produced by Ferrari to date.
The targa topped 308 GTS was introduced in 1977 and was made famous on the television series Magnum, P.I.. Several cars were used, a new one for each season, most being auctioned off after filming. The first was a 1979 model with chassis number 28251.

Thank you LEONARDO FIORAVANTI (Pininfarina car designer). After more than 40 years that design is still so much desirable.

i have an early 308 GTB and also a porsche 911S from the early 70's. The GTB is an absolute blast to drive. Light, precise and it sounds as if the engine is in the cabin with you. The performance of both of these cars at 200-250bhp in a light package is about right for our crowded roads these days - the Ferrari esp is made to be reved and with that noise, no electronic gizmos keeping you on the road and a (very) low seating position, the experience is great without travelling at silly speeds, continuously "running our of road" and feeling totally antisocial. The main choice here is carbs or fuel injection, I don't have much experience of the injection 308/328s but the Porsche has a mechanical fuel injection ( wonderful engineering for its age) and is much easier to live with, pulls smoothly, but I wouldn't have the Ferrari any other way. I think the carbs give the car its character.

Ferrari made some great road cars during the 1960s period onwards, to finance obviously Enzo's love of F1 racing. The 275GTB, 365GTB4 (Daytona), 330, 365 etc. just a few to mention. The 308GTB was a great car, following on from the 246 Dino in design queues. The 365/512BB also great machines, probably worth more in value today than a 360 Modena and their ilk...

Two fundamental aspects of the automotive world which Italy, clearly, has never grasped.

I think the Cam Belt change is the real reason nobody drives a Ferrari as a daily driver.

Mike Roe Think so too. Allthough every Ferrari has its own maintenance schemes, the invoices are always tough to handle... :-( Glad you liked my video! Hopefully you'll find some more in all
the videos I have made over the last couple of years. Thanks for your support! Regards from the

The cambelt change is an easy task on the cars with the transversely mounted engine. No engine out job. Most of the work is done through the right rear well. Nice car btw. And fine video. I own the fourth last built carburettor GTB since 1996. My avatar is its engine on the workbench.

Yes, odd car. To understand this car, think about the old Toyota Celica. It looked alright, but it didn't go stop or handle. It was basically a sexy body on every-day mechanicals. It was a car for waiters and hair dressers... So about the time Toyota made it, Ferrari had much the same idea. Then they got a tv show, with Tom Selleck in Hawai...A year or two after it went out of production, they made a real sports car, called the 288 GTO, which was a couple of inches wider and about a foot longer. Apart from some shark vents, it looked almost exactly like a 308, but it had a real engine and a real chassis and real turbos, and it really handled and went quite well. And it looked GORGEOUS! But then the boss (Enzo) decided to take over one last project himself, and built the F-40, which was a very similar car, slightly lighter and not quite as pretty, but it worked a little better. And now the F-40 is an all-time classic, and the 288 is a forgotten sideshow, but the 288 was special in one way. It was perhaps the best looking car Ferrari ever made... and unlike the 308 it did stop and go and handle like a good one.

+Kneedragon1962 YES YES! I don't think the 308 is a bad car, but the 288 GTO has been my favorite Ferrari since my early childhood. Most bizarre thing is that I have never seen one in real from up close. Regards, Walter

Simply said the 308 (and 208) was a brand builder and a Ferrari show case for everyone (who could afford it). Although it was just in a rally version as well for a short period - on that did race instead of the 288 GTO - the 308 was never mend to be a sports and racing car: It is not a "super car". Just like the Testarossa isn't really, but the 288 GTO, F40 is. It's heritage was that Ferrari saw the need to build the 348 and of course the 355. Ferrari's that "you could drive in a city" and make trips with it.

Have you ever driven a 308? I used to own one, one of my biggest regrets is selling it a few years back , I'd love to own one again but the prices have increased by 400 per cent in the last two years. Im not sure how you conclude that they don't handle well, all the road test reviews were positive about it's handling and I can tell you that that little car went around corners like it was on rails, no power steering and a notchy gearbox gave it a racing car feel, you really had to drive that thing and the faster you went the lighter the steering got. best model was the carb version, they are tremendous fun to drive, not like a modern car at all, its really a 1970s car and for its era they stand up well, of course compared to a modern car they are slow but thats not the appeal, driving along at 50 then accelerating to 75 or 80 miles per hour in fourth gear is fantastic. The 208 was the same size engine with a couple of turbos strapped on thats all, I much prefer the nimble body shape of a deep spoilered european GTS, in my view its the last consumer Ferrari that is beautiful and pure in it sdesign, given the choice between a modern Ferrari and a 308 I'd take the 308 and use the change to tour around Europe in it!!

I currently own a 308. It's definitely not mind numbingly fast, but compared to the other sports cars of the day, it can hold it's own. The 288 GTO and F40 were supercar icons of the 80s, and they perform as such. The 308 is simply a very well built sports car. Compare it to a 240 or 280z, a 1970s/80s corvette, or even a porsche 911 of the time, and it's a very enjoyable, comparable (if not better) experience. I saw an article where Road and Track took a 1960 Corvette and compared it to a 1999 Honda Minivan. The minivan was definitely faster in every measurable way, but I only want one of those two in my garage. If you get the opportunity to ever drive a 308, I recommend it. It's a different experience, from an era seemingly far gone from modern motoring.

Actually Enzo had little to nothing to do with the development of the F40.
Nicola Materazzi developed the 288 GTO and after a limited production run, was twiddling his thumbs.
The old man was becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of performance in the Ferrari range, competitors were catching up and he ordered NM to do something.
NM created the F40 as the ultimate response to the performance question and the rest is history.
Upon completion of the project, the old man fired him and then passed away himself, shortly thereafter.
The Materazzi interview is on UA-cam, watch it, I may have misrepresented in my summary here.
