Final Fantasy VII has been built up as very dramatic and meaningful, and while it certainly did have those aspects, I noticed the expanded cash cow universe has sort of ignored the silly. Sephiroth is an insane momma's boy, Cloud dresses as woman, your party features a robot cat golem, Final Fantasy VII can be very silly and it is awesome. Thanks for not downplaying that aspect.

There is a reason FFVII is so hyped. It's not just for nostalgia. It's a super good game. It annoys me when people say it's overhyped. Like, I can see it is. But it is because it's such a good game

Sephiroth doesn't know Jenova is an alien, he thinks it's an Ancient, a Cetra. And that the humans wiped out the Ancients and wants to revenge her mother and kill all those "evil" humans, and those who oppose him of course. And then with time wanting to become a God just like his powerful mother was and rule the world as their liking, he is more or less justifing his cause/reason because of their (humans) evil acts against the Ancients and on his mother. Sephiroth wasn't stabbed in the back, he was stabbed in the stomach, as you see clearly in your own video he turns around before Cloud stabs. Stabbed in the back version comes from the short anime movie "Last Order", where they changed some details of what happened in Niebelheim.
Actually, Sephiroth does know full well that she is an alien in the present. It's only during the Nibelheim Incident that he believed she was an Ancient due to the misinformation contained within those Shinra logs, as they had misidentified her as a Cetran. However, after falling into the Lifestream and absorbing all that knowledge from the Ancients, he learned what she truly was all along. This is why his goals shifted from being about revenge to wanting to become a god-like being, with little concern over "taking back" the Planet (hell, his new goal requires him to further WOUND the Planet rather than save it from humanity). Fans tend to be mistaken and think he believes she's an Ancient throughout the whole game because he still calls the creature his "mother" during the Temple of the Ancients section, but that's simply because he still views her as such. He knows that she isn't his birth mother, but that doesn't really matter to him. After all, even back when he found out and erroneously believed she was an ancient, he knew he wasn't literally birthed out of her like regular people. The notes clearly speak of this being as an entity that was found in stasis, not a living person who walked among them, conceived, then had a baby. At the end of the day, she is still the being that was used in the experiments that created him, and that's enough for him to view her as his mother. The only things he never really found out about were Lucrecia and Hojo being his real parents. However, at that point, he probably wouldn't even care.
It's pretty great to hear others talk about what they love with such passion. You may forget it sometimes in this clusterfuck of disappointment that it is the internet, but the way videogames can connect with someone can be quite beautiful and even make you change your "position" about things by just hearing others. Probably why I like this guy so much. Personally, I've never been the biggest fan of VII, and while I don't like how much it affected the industry or Square itself, I hold quite the respect for the game, even if I have a few issues with it. For example, I felt the concept of the materia system undermined the value of the characters themselves as useful members of the party, instead of having interesting abilities or powers that diferenciate each member, they depend on "things" to do stuff for them, making me feel like anyone with those "things" would be able to do the same things these supposed heroes do. Being "special" because you happen to hold something that let's you do interesting stuff is a big turn-off for me, compared to other games where you learn or develop abilities over time and they feel part of the character. Mechanically wise, though, the materia system is quite good and fun to mess with, so as I said, my dislike with the materia is just the concept. That said, I think it has a lot of other great things that Clement pointed nicely in this fantastic video, and generally speaking I believe it's a pretty good game, even if it shows it's age more than the other old FF's. It's depressing to see the original game and how each "Expanded universe" thing they added onto it hurt the original story more, and more, and more...
That Toriel gag had me laughing. Well done Clement Religious sepiroth is the best headcanon I am never playing that snowboard minigame without the sonic adventure music. I wish clement showed off that you can't lose to sepiroth in that one sequence
Great video, Clement! This was definitely worth the wait; I totally understand the delay since the games are getting longer, all of your real life things, and the fact that I know you wanted this video to be just perfect for one of your favorite games. As for me, this was the first Final Fantasy game I played. I still need to finish it since I got distracted by other things, but I really enjoyed what I played so far. It's the most popular game in the series for good reason.
*Adjusts nerdgirl glasses Limit Breaks were introduced in FFVI as Desperation Attacks that triggered when a character who had critically low health used a regular attack. But the proc rate was extremely low (1 in 16 chance and cannot trigger in the first 25 seconds of combat), so I can see how people might have missed them.
The Desperation Attacks were unique animations to each character in VI. But they weren't a key mechanic of combat, since no one really knew how to make them happen at the time and would heal whenever their HP got low. FFVIII used a similar system, but the trigger was just low health and not low health plus more than 25 seconds into a battle. VII definitely highlighted Limit Breaks as a feature of combat though, because they liked the idea from VI where characters could get these awesome attacks if they took damage in battle and wanted to build on that. Plus, the better technology allowed them to do more flashy attacks and they really wanted to show off what they could do with the battle system (also why Summons were so much grander in scale than previous Final Fantasy games).
I think people are too quick to in their idea that Limit Breaks were merely an iteration of desperation attacks (are those really named as such in game?). In VI there were techniques that characters could use always (slots, tools, Blitz), and those that they could rarely ever use (the DA). Limit Breaks were devised as a compromise to me. If you think about it, some Limits seems to be designed after the first type of ability (like Slots).

Subbed and looking forward to spending my sunday watching some more of your remembering stuff.
Oguzhan Gungor It's probably this "short" because of all the editing he has to do. There is a 6 hour and 40 minutes video where he talks about Life is Strange to the background of a still image
8 was actually my first Final Fantasy experience, despite the fact that I am only a year younger than Clement. I was a very sheltered kid who only knew about RPGs because my friends played them.
if you had a video based on FF7 that was more than an hour long, i can promise you i'd watch it. while it's my second favorite of the franchise overall, it was still my first real exposure to it. nostalgia or not, it holds a special place in my heart.
54:03 I remember having Yuffie in my party when Aerith was killed, and I was initially in shock, just silent, ya know? Then I saw Yuffie's reaction and that's when I was just nailed by a flood of emotions. It was so *real*. Hironobu Sakaguchi lost his mother while developing FFIII, so he wrote FFVII with the themes of life and death. It's why when Aerith died there was no *recovery* of the time and resources the player put into developing her. That was gone, along with Aerith, and all that was left were the memories. I remember at the time so many players thought there must have been SOME way to bring her back, but there never was. Happened in FFVI but to a lesser extent with General Leo. Players thought there had to be a way to bring him back but Sakaguchi was like NOPE. But we didn't know then what he'd teach us with FFVII.
And oh yeah, after Aerith died I thought anything could happen to anybody, which is why the plot twists that came after gave me so much stress I was on the edge of my seat. Hahaha. I still think FFVI had a better story overall but VII is also a master-class in game writing, no doubt.
This was, definitely something to watch. For the longest time I kind of forgot why I loved 7 so much, other than just using the excuse of it being the first game I ever played, and it being my gateway into Final Fantasy. Everyone I know around me despise 7 so it's fantastic for me to see people who genuinely enjoy the game and understand what makes it great. Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it and it made my day to relive and remember so many things from my childhood.
This was the only video game to make my cry. Going through this retrospective with Clement is like revisiting my childhood and all the games I grew up on. Clement I want to thank you for this series, this video in particular touches so many heartstrings.
I need to play through FF7 again, since I have it on Steam. I'll probably play it with the Reunion mod set installed, since it re-translated the game using the original Japanese script and apparently there were some story changes to the American version. Crazy thing I've heard: because the game was so popular in the west, the expanded FF7 franchise goes by the story as it was presented in the western localization, even if it differs from the intent of the original script. I'm not sure of the extent of it, but I suppose this next run through the game will shed some light on it, assuming I can get the mod to work. - Lewis
Amazing video Clement you truly rekindled my love of Final Fantasy 7! The more I think about it the more I realize that it really is my favourite game in the series, it just oozes with so much charm. Absolutely loving this series of videos I think it is your best work yet. Keep it up!
Beautifully said my friend. Every word. I've thought about making a video like this for years, but now that you've made one so amazing there's hardly need for any video anywhere near like this. For me, your video, is perfection ;)
I love final fantasy 7 when i think about the game you'd think the first thing that would come to mind would be cloud or sephiroth but its jenova for me i love her concept and the mystery behind her wish there was more of her. Im thinking of getting a tattoo of the metal angel that covered her
Thanks again Clement! Was really looking forward to this one! Don't worry about taking too long. I understand you have a life and I'm more than patient enough to wait for your upcoming FF videos. I'm just really glad you're doing this retrospective in the first place. Have a good one!
42:49 - If this is addressed in the remake, I would approve. It's one of the few changes I'd legitimately be alright with. He literally steals the key to the Black Materia, and then says we should go on like nothing happened. And the party is ok with it. Seriously, this is a thing.
Having just recently played FF7 (as party of my Final Fantasy introductory marathon), I can say that I'm glad I finally did. I really enjoyed it. The story was pretty cool. Cloud past was interesting to learn about, there were good character beats, and Sephiroth was a neat villain. I thought the fmv cutscenes were pretty cool (although they felt like they needed voice acting). The gameplay was fun. The Limit system is cool and is much more useful than the desperation attack system from 6. While I think the materia system works pretty well, but it cumbersome for someone like me who wanted to try and use all of the party members as much as possible. However, I thought some of the minigames/gimmicks were annoying (mostly the march and snowboarding). The chocobo breeding was fine, I mostly did it to get the Knights of Round, quad magic and master all materia. Some favourite characters of mine were Tifa (I shipped her with Cloud more than Aerith), Cid, Yuffie and Vincent (both gameplay and story wise). However, I think FF6 resonated with me ever so slightly more. I think Kefka was a slightly more enticing villain than Sephiroth. And the sad scene in 6 hit me harder than some of the sad scenes in 7 (which might just be a musical preference issue, not necessarily writing). Next up is Crisis Core, then either FF8 (probably when a PS4 port comes), FF9 or a break from Final Fantasy for a bit (to play Yakuza 0).
Amazing work on this one Clement. As someone who has only ever completed maybe 2 RPGs in his life, I certainly will put this game on my gaming bucket list. The amount of heart put into your video must come close to the heart put into the game itself! I can't wait to give it a shot one day!
Truly worth the watch. I imagined this was like a boss battle for you to get this video out asap and you've finally defeated it. Funny enough, I went back and rewatched the other ones because I love hearing you talk about FF. And listening to you talk about your favorite one, made it even more enjoyable. ^^
Beating Sephiroth for the first time at my cousin's house is still one of my favorite moments in an RPG. I never owned a PS1 skipping straight from the SNES to the PS2 but as soon as I got a PS2 I got this game and Tactics. I remember trying every rumored method to revive Aeris I ever heard at school or found on the net to no avail.
When you said you would like a scene where Cloud explains Cait Sith to the party, it made me think of something. One of the few things I actually found funny about the FF7 Abridged series is how Cloud justifies Cait Sith and CID joining the party. And really, that's about as good an explanation i could see Cloud giving. He just digs them.
Overall it was a great review, I also love FF7 and is one of my top 5 best games ever made in video game history. It is the most emotional game I have ever played to this day and consider it to be my favourite.
In my opinion the fact that the developers tried to innovate on so many different levels is a double-edged sword. On one hand the overabundance of battle animations, mini games and background lore gave people playing it back in the day plenty of mind blowing moments and thus memories to still call it their favorite game to this day. On the other hand the disparity between the enormous degree ambition, technical limitations and lack of experience can be felt all the more and is most likely the reason why a more grounded experience like Final Fantasy 6 or 9 is usually preferred by newcomers to the series.
When it comes to video games, there aren't as many that have left the impression that Final Fantasy VII did. The music, the characters, the plot...just so legendary. So many aspects define what makes a memorable RPG for me, and have also left an impact in so many manners of my life. Such a wonderful experience that I will always treasure. Thanks for a wonderful retrospective Clement.
This may sound a bit cheesy, but thanks to this video, I went back and played seven again. That playthrough made me really appreciate it more than I ever have before. It's now tied as my favorite entry in the series along side ten. So I guess I can say thank you Clement. Your video helped me truly enjoy a classic
7:24 - Yeah, the justification for them blowing up the reactors and killing scores of innocent people in the process is definitely asinine, and both sides really come off as horrible. It's only after certain major events happen that your characters are forced to realize there's bigger things at stake and go from being terrorists to being genuine heroes.
Yeah, and I won't address the unnecessary and mediocre-at-best add-ons that were made years and years after the fact. I've said it before with The After Years, but don't fix what isn't broken.
If the remake is decent, MAYBE it would be worth doing a video on, but considering they plan on 'radically changing parts of the story', the canonicity of it will likely be questionable at best. As I said, the expanded universe of VII feels like nothing more than fanfiction.
I won't lie, I'm more of a fan of the original five FF (except FF2, obs). Like FFIV is my fav, I just played V and VI thanks to your retrospective and I thank you. That goes without saying I also do really love VII like you do. If the remake unfortunately doesn't do well, we at least still have this timeless classic.
I wounder about one thing though? Would they adopt stuff from Crisis Core (what explain some important details in the game) or just stay faithful to the original game what let be honest.. has its flaw. No mater what I hope they keep rest of the FF7 expansions out as they were shitty.
Matt Letourneau For me, the top Final Fantasys (Gameplay-wise) was 4,5,6,7,14 and 15. Story wise, it was 4,6, and 10. 13 (in general) was a guilty pleasure, and Chrono Trigger and Bravely Default/the second are two different *BEASTS*.
Bringer of dis pear That's The thing, though. I usually prefer templates should it be entertaining without breaking the game's Characters apart, and 4 seems to have the best results.
Talking about his top tier favorite game 1 hour too long? How about talking about his most hated and most disappointing video game of all time for 3 hours? You can keep going Clement , I don't mind. jk, excited for Clement remembers FF8.
Damn, Clement, you really have a way with words. I honestly teared up when you were talking about what cloud went through was relatable. You're really good at storytelling.
As of Febuary 2019 I regret to inform you that Sepiroth is not in KH3. Really theres no Final Fantasy pressence in the game at all... WTF happend Nomura?
He said that the reason for that was because there were so many original characters that needed to resolve their own problems and issues. And because their issues were very difficult, there just wasn't that much space to fit in the Final Fantasy characters.
@@gamestation2690 Indeed. They weren't needed for the plot of 3. So they weren't there. Fortunately that problem is no longer present and they can return more organically now.
UA-cam should have the option to "double thumbs up" a video and get counted twice, like, once a day or once a week per account. Double thumbs up for this vid, Clement!!!
This game is my favourite of all time, and I just got the game in January, and all ready I've played through it 3 times. I think I have a problem help.
Even though I finished this last summer and it's nowhere near my favorite games of all time, I can see what made it a masterpiece to this day. There's so much gaming takes for granted nowadays because this was so ahead of its time. I really love watching someone who loves this game, telling of stories back then. Though I'm not playing another FF anytime soon, thank you so much Clement for sending me into the past to see this game in a new yet old light.
And unlike say Mario 64 or Zelda: Ocarina of Time, FF7 does it's 3D transition better. Yeah. It does feel dated in terms of visually and some translation of the narrative. But as for it's first 3D Final Fantasy game, it holds up better than Mario 64 & Zelda: Ocarina of Time IMO.
Before Frisk fell into flowers, Cloud fell into flowers. Admittedly, Undertale DOES have a reference to Final Fantasy, albeit not an FF7 one, but the Mettaton Musical scene is a direct reference to the Opera Scene from FF6.
I originally started watching this video when it came out, thinking I'm never going to bother playing the game myself anyways. I got to the point where you reveal the entire Midgar thing was before the game begins proper, went "holy shit", and decided I need to experience this game some way. A while back while looking around in a niche gaming store I noticed they had a copy of FF7. Bought on the spot. Just recently beat it and oh man that was one hell of a journey. Thank you for convincing me to play it.
Thanks for this Clement. This game has always meant a lot to me. I've gone through and finished it several times simply because of how memorable it is and always has been. Sadly, I don't have the free time to devote to an RPG these days so I've been putting off going through it one more time for way too long. I actually got pretty emotional watching this video because it brought back all the good times I'd had with this. I desperately hope to go back and play it again all the way through. And I HOPE TO GOD they don't fuck up the remake when it comes out 15 years from now
Final Fantasy VII was never my favorite. I thought the FMV and such gave it a little more flash and style than substance like IV and VI, and I always found Cloud to be kind of a generic, moody, blasé main character. But God damn if you didn't open my mind to a little more about Cloud's character and get me to appreciate him, and this game, a lot more. Great video, great series, very interested in what you have to say about VIII.
This video brought me insight but doesn't change my opinion about the characters and the fact that it's a Turn-based RPG. Which I still don't like, but I can at least understand why people love the game to begin with. And that's okay, because I know that at the very least they know what quality is. And while I still think this game is overrated, final fantasy VII is a quality game. Now for those people who say XIII is good....

Why not both?

He actually guessed when his Final Fantasy 7 Remake video came out
Sephiroth doesn't know Jenova is an alien, he thinks it's an Ancient, a Cetra.
I'd go crazy too if Hojo was my dad.
Joe Neutrino same
Hojo did nothing wrong. Don't let your dreams be dreams!

Sephi doesn't know Hojo is his dad though at the time of "insanity".

That Toriel gag had me laughing. Well done Clement

I am never playing that snowboard minigame without the sonic adventure music.

Limit Breaks were introduced in FFVI as Desperation Attacks that triggered when a character who had critically low health used a regular attack. But the proc rate was extremely low (1 in 16 chance and cannot trigger in the first 25 seconds of combat), so I can see how people might have missed them.
ahh one of the stupid mechanics that was brought back for FF VIII but modified some.
Really though, FF7 MADE the limit system. Personal attacks and different animations and such.
Kara99tg Yeah what you said.
Love what your doing with the remember final fantasy series Clement! These videos are helping me learn what is magical about this series and I cant wait for you to get to XIV!
35:53 Screw you Clement I'm searching for that right noOHH JESUS WHY DID I SEARCH FOR THAT!!!

Dude, I rarely watch hour long youtube videos without dicking around on my phone at the same time. You did what I didn't think was possible and captured the essence of Final Fantasy VII and what it was like when this masterpiece was unleashed to the world for its time. Subbed and looking forward to spending my sunday watching some more of your remembering stuff.
"I knew tons of people who cried to this scene-"
Dude, I cried just watching it play back right now.
Amen my friend, amen.
My favourite Final Fantasy game. Everything from the music, graphics, characters and character progression, mini game
Only 90 minutes? pshhh I can talk about Trails in The Sky games for 5 hours straight.
With that said Clement remembers final fantasy 8 HYPE!!!!!!
Oguzhan Gungor It's probably this "short" because of all the editing he has to do. There is a 6 hour and 40 minutes video where he talks about Life is Strange to the background of a still image
dff true
8 was actually my first Final Fantasy experience, despite the fact that I am only a year younger than Clement.
I was a very sheltered kid who only knew about RPGs because my friends played them.
if you had a video based on FF7 that was more than an hour long, i can promise you i'd watch it.
while it's my second favorite of the franchise overall, it was still my first real exposure to it. nostalgia or not, it holds a special place in my heart.
You mean that hard Turk battle near the end was optional?!?!?
I'm filled with so much rage. I struggled hard to beat them when I didn't have to.
Cloud doesn't suffer from PTSD, but from a Dissociative disorder: Dissociative Fugue.
That's why he assumes a new identity
1:15:18 - It's supposed to be Cloud expelling the last of the Jenova cells from his own body and mind.
1 hour, almost 24 minutes...*well* worth the wait. [[ watches ]]
Damn it Clement, you got me teary-eyed again...excellent video man, well done.
Good to be back here after SGB just finished their LP of FF7...
4 years worth it!
The one thing the original was lacking: Aerith with a folding chair.
Aerith's joke weapon should've been a chair instead of an umbrella.
Clement, why are you hitting my heart places!!!

Amazing video Clement you truly rekindled my love of Final Fantasy 7! The more I think about it the more I realize that it really is my favourite game in the series, it just oozes with so much charm. Absolutely loving this series of videos I think it is your best work yet. Keep it up!
You broke my heart when you said you wanted to kick sephiroth's ass in KH3.
Your party cooperates because they took Marlene as a hostage.
@@SamsarasArt Could you link to me the scene where this happens?
@@SamsarasArt I saw the scene, but when he's on the airship, Barret could have killed him.
@@SamsarasArt So the scene does show Marlene as a hostage, but that makes Tifa even worse when she white knights for him.
Thank you for the upload!
You put so much heart and diligence into these videos 🙂 It is straight-up inspiring, and I have loved listening to this series!
I remember when I first played and beat this. I never got Knights of the Round, and I still beat Sephiroth
Same
It's still possible to best sephiroth without kotr.
Amazing work on this one Clement. As someone who has only ever completed maybe 2 RPGs in his life, I certainly will put this game on my gaming bucket list. The amount of heart put into your video must come close to the heart put into the game itself! I can't wait to give it a shot one day!
I never fully played FF7, so your explanation of Sephiroth makes so much sense to me. He's an amalgamation of Terra and Kefka's stories!
Truly worth the watch. I imagined this was like a boss battle for you to get this video out asap and you've finally defeated it. Funny enough, I went back and rewatched the other ones because I love hearing you talk about FF. And listening to you talk about your favorite one, made it even more enjoyable. ^^
"i can't wait to beat hin again in KH3"
I have Sad news for ya
Welcome back Clement, missed you this summer. Hope you had a good time off!
Overall it was a great review, I also love FF7 and is one of my top 5 best games ever made in video game history. It is the most emotional game I have ever played to this day and consider it to be my favourite.
This was amazing. Clement, you're awesome. I'm so glad I keep watching you.
31:40 oooh whos gona tell him
This may sound a bit cheesy, but thanks to this video, I went back and played seven again.
What a brilliant retrospective you so got it right about everything, well done on an excellent review man! 10/10
FINALLY!!!
ive replayed this game dozens of times, and i know i will keep doing so in the future
Matt Letourneau nice. I’m in the middle of playing 4 and 7. I actually bought 4 off of Steam thanks to this retrospective
Quickman may win right on bro, I myself have all the five I mentioned comfortably on my PS Vita (with of course Chrono Trigger ;P)
To this day this is one of your best reviews if not the best on YT
Talking about his top tier favorite game 1 hour too long? How about talking about his most hated and most disappointing video game of all time for 3 hours? You can keep going Clement , I don't mind.
jk, excited for Clement remembers FF8.
Clement delivers a top-quality video yet again. Well worth the wait!
Keep the remake, I am perfectly happy with the masterpiece original FF 7. Time to start my yearly play through.

It goes to show how much people appreciate it even if isn't there personal favorite.
31:40 “I can’t wait to beat him up in KH3” Well about that………..
Well, Sora and Sephiroth are in Smash so they can finally have that rematch.
Just back for my yearly nostalgia trip!
At 8:18 a undertale joke.😂lol
Before Frisk fell into flowers, Cloud fell into flowers. Admittedly, Undertale DOES have a reference to Final Fantasy, albeit not an FF7 one, but the Mettaton Musical scene is a direct reference to the Opera Scene from FF6.
I love hearing the stories people have with this game
At long last, my favorite RPG of all time!

You just made a lot of people feel really old. But you came at a great time for gaming.
Stu729 I know right. And this years too. The cycle repeat himself
I came around 2000 where FFX was near its release. Dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing
I came in 1995 after FF6 (My Personal favorite in the series) but in the year of Chrono Trigger and Earthbound!
This new insight into Cloud's character is similar to how I viewed Guts before actually learning about Berserk.
Ive never played XIII but Lightning looks hot so thats enough for me. Now about that true ending being available only as DLC...
.... I thought the new Endings are going to e Non-Canon
Also, Final Fantasy XIII is basically what you just said. Visuals, and that's it. The game has fantastic visuals but is lacking in every other aspect.
This was the first final fantasy game I played and beat. It's definitely one of my favorites
Videos are very good, I want FF8! And 9, and X, XII, XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns. You got a new subscriber! You can skip FFXV
Welcome back from your summer fun hope you continue to have more.
