I know you made this video back in 2020, but I just wanted to thank you for a successful DIY Saturday morning today. Had I taken my 2015 Town and Country into the shop I might have paid as much as $500. Thanks to your help all I paid was $42 for the thermostat and a jug of coolant. For anyone with one of these older vans I can’t recommend a hand held reader enough to check for the codes when the engine light comes on. It has paid for itself since the first time we used it and helped us quickly identify our thermostat issue yesterday afternoon. Your short video was perfect for getting it done. Just put my iPad on top of the engine cover and followed your lead. Thanks a million!

Your video was extremely helpful in replacing my 2016 Chrysler Town and Country Thermostat. Antifreeze ran all over the bottom plate. There wasn't really any way to avoid this, most of it ran into the pan. I had a hard time disconnecting the wire harness plastic holder and I broke it off. No biggie I guess. Also, there is a very sharp point of metal where the air cleaner sat, I had to be very careful in that area. Everything else went well. I thought. I went for a test drive and was sitting at a light. It dawned on me that I completely forgot to move the hose clamp back into position. I was very lucky though that it was still attached and I didn't loose any of the anti-freeze I added. Our van uses orange anti-freeze if anyone is interested. I will be going to AutoZone tomorrow to get the code reset.
your vehicle will automatically reset the engine code because the problem is fixed. Make sure you fill the coolant from the top bleed screw that is on top of the thermostat housing to prevent any air bubbles in your system. Thanks for watching!!

A couple things that helped me: 1. Disconnect the entire Air Filter Housing and hose intact by disconnecting the hose at the far end rather than the housing, then remove the vacuum hose, press fit wiring, and power steering reservoir. Now the housing and tube can be removed as one with a simple pull. No need to even ever open the housing. 2. The windshield washer fluid reservoir has "finger" extension that can be used to hold the power steering reservoir upright and ensure no air enters the system. 3. He had that nice tool to remove the press fitting, you can also improvise with Gardening hand tool weeder. Hope this helps at least one person.
About a week ago I noticed every time I drove anywhere, after about 10 minutes my temp gauge goes up to hot for about 30 seconds, then it drops back to normal for the rest of the drive. My check engine light came on a week ago when this started. So it looks like I need to replace my thermostat. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Extremely helpful. The only thing that I recommend to anyone who wants to do this repair, is to purchase the tool to remove the radiator hose clamp. I got it done with vise grips and channels locks, but it was a pain in the blessed assurance! Otherwise, simple repair.

I have always just batted my eyes at my dad and step dad and they repair whatever goes wrong in life LOL but I'm trying to learn to do things on my own, while I still have them around to teach me. I don't know anything about vehicles but am going to try this, with their supervision and see if my light goes off! Good video, I agree with a comment below about taking out the air box as one unit. Also, go to Home Depot and grab a large plastic water heater pan (screw a 1" cap onto the drain fitting) and slide it under the car to catch the antifreeze.

Good video as it was informative and only one item missed which I’m sure you did but didn’t mention was purging the air out of the system by using the cross slotted hex head you see on the topside of the housing by turning 1/4 turn to do this and returning to its closed position, checking and refilling coolant level as needed. All good my friend and again good video

Definitely, DEFINITELY recommend draining about a gallon of coolant out of the radiator before doing this. Easy to capture from the outlet under the draincock into a clean container using a foot-long tube. So much coolant lost in this video! If I had thought to keep the radiator hose up when I pulled it off the t-stat housing, I would have lost none. (I lost maybe an 1/8th of a cup.) Major PITA trying to get the bottom air filter housing back on the pin closest to the engine.
Man thanks for the video! I changed out mine, the hardest part was getting the clamp over the hose once I got the themostat in. I just used some pliers to hold the clamp open. I did have to move all that stuff liked you showed in the vid. I don't know how someone could work around the filter and such.

I changed mine in 5 minutes. Take a 10 reach down remove the 2 bolts. Fold over hose mark where housing is on hose with a marker. Take clamp off. Pull old one off. Put new one where old one was by your markings. Put hose clamp back on run the two bolts in. Done. I use very little playtex to insure a good seal. Then the bubble bleeder should talk some about. Thanks

You are most welcome Eldridge! P0128 engine code means your engine coolant is not getting to operating temperature quick enough to meet the engine normal spec. Check your engine coolant for a proper 50/50 coolant mix. If you have not serviced the coolant system in awhile this would be the place to start. Hope this helps!

Ditto on the evap. So far it seems to have been a ghost issue for us from a loose gas cap. We cleared the code with the handheld and it hasn’t coded for evap but a couple of times in the past five years. If there could be another issue please let us know. Seems to be a common issue for these vans.
Does the check engine light go away by itself after the replacement or do you have to disconnect the battery to reset? I’m doing this t stat replacement tomorrow. Thank you for the advice.
My recommendations: 1. No need to remove all that stuff at the beginning. If you use technique from #2, access is not a problem. Just need to move the power steering reservoir out of the way. 2. Remove screws, bend hose up for access, replace thermostat, and reconnect thermostat. All you have to do is make alignment marks on hose and thermostat and everything lines up perfectly. Way easier. 3. Don't mess with the bleeder. I did and when I tightened it back up the head twisted off. Not pleased. Much easier to just let the engine run and keep adding coolant as air works its way out. 4. Use locking pliers (VISE-GRIP) on that clamp. The pliers will easily hold the clamp open for as long as you need to move it out and back into position. 5. Before starting, use a file to dull that switchblade of a clip that will cut up the back of your hand while your work!
I removed that stuff to give me enough room to film and give you a good view. I agree with you, you could remove less if you wanted. That sucks about your bleed screw, I let the engine bleed itself and it works great. Another great idea with using Vicegrips and not the normal slip joint pliers like I did. (Yes I am going right down your list answering it all lol) LOL YES to #5!!!! That clip will get you over and over again. Great tips G Walker! Thanks for watching as well!
@@Sellthoseflippingcars #1 was just a suggestion for others; totally get how you need to remove stuff to make a video. #3 - Yeah, after getting another thermostat I bled it the old school way. MUCH easier. Kicked myself for even touching that bleed screw the first time. #4 - Necessity is the mother of invention. I only switched to VISE-GRIP after about giving myself carpal tunnel syndrome using slip joint pliers! :) Thanks and thanks for the video!

Your coolant temperature sensor is reading too low. Is your coolant old in the system? If your coolant is not mixed 50/50 it will not reach the temperature it needs to, to be "normal temperature" for the ECM.
It could be an air bubble in the system. With the engine being cool, take the top off the coolant reservoir and squeeze the top radiator hose. Do that a few times and see if you have any air bubbles
@@Sellthoseflippingcars thanks it seems to be cleared out now. But the P0219A issues is a whole other issue that I had to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer. It might be much worst than I thought.
After u done please let as know how the van is running cause i have exactly the same van and i replace that thermostat but the code came back after erasing it ?

Additionally, I recommend using a new constant tension clamp as well as covering the pulley and the belt area with shop rags as spilled coolant wreaks havoc with those. You need to bleed the air out of the system. Use the bleed screw cap that is located on the thermostat housing. Do not over torque the screw it is made out of plastic
I changed the thermostat. Drove 200 mi. Check engine with p0128 didn't go away. Engine Temps around 188on highway 208-216 idle here in Florida with Temps outside around 90. I figure if it was a coolant sensor then it would not give accurate readings. Only problem that concerns me is that when burping the system with no spill funnel after thermostat open it started boiling and spilling vigorously coolant around. Like everywhere around engine area
At the top of your thermostat housing you will see a plastic screw. This is your bleed cap for your thermostat housing and your cooling system. Fill until there is no air and you are good to go! Great job!
I would use a refractometer and check the strength of the coolant and any debris. If it test good and is still at the 50/50 mix with no debris in it, then I would keep it. Let me know if you need help finding the tool needed. Thank you for watching!
Can you give me some advice how to properly change a head gasket and antifreeze removal from the engine compartment. Changing the thermostat didn't work, maybe operator error. Thought I got it right. But anyhow would you be willing to throw some more knowledge my way?
i just opened the air box flipped the top part over and the bottom part of air pops out and flip that up and out of the way the only thing i unscrewed was the thermostat, the 2 pieces lean against each other flipped up to stay out of the way

I changed mine but now it has a (new) small leak from the new thermostat housing. Any experience with duralast thermostats for this? Also, should I use some kind of permatex sealant?
If you purchased it locally I would return it and get a new one. You should not have to use any kind of rtV with this thermostat housing since it has a o ring. If you do have to use rTV it is because you have a leak.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to do this with as little mess as possible. You mention a clamp type tool to put on the radiator hose to prevent spilling. Do you have a link to something like that? All I get when I Google is regular clamps for the ends.

That was awesome! I was worried about doing it myself but I did it. Now do you have any good ideas for why my passenger side seat heater won’t work. I checked the fuses the fuse for it what corroded so I put a new one in but that didn’t help. The light for it inside comes on and then after about five seconds it goes off
After you pulled the corroded fuse out where you able to clean the female port of the fuse as well? Sometimes when there is corrosion on the fuse it will spread to the female side and will decrease voltage because of it.
If the light is still on it means that you have an air pocket in the system. At the top of the thermostat housing there is a plastic bleed screw. Take a funnel and fill the coolant system from this bleed screw to make sure all of the air is out of the system.
@@Sellthoseflippingcars I'm hearing air leaking (hissing) out my chrysler t&c where the ac and heat go into the cabin housing of the vehicle plus I can feel it Is that normal
What effects can a bad thermostat cause I’ve been having coolant spring from somewhere, but I can’t tell where and I’ve been told different things that the thermostat could be bad, causing everything to overheat and making coolant spray out

A couple things that helped me:
1. Disconnect the entire Air Filter Housing and hose intact by disconnecting the hose at the far end rather than the housing, then remove the vacuum hose, press fit wiring, and power steering reservoir. Now the housing and tube can be removed as one with a simple pull. No need to even ever open the housing.
2. The windshield washer fluid reservoir has "finger" extension that can be used to hold the power steering reservoir upright and ensure no air enters the system.
3. He had that nice tool to remove the press fitting, you can also improvise with Gardening hand tool weeder.

About a week ago I noticed every time I drove anywhere, after about 10 minutes my temp gauge goes up to hot for about 30 seconds, then it drops back to normal for the rest of the drive. My check engine light came on a week ago when this started. So it looks like I need to replace my thermostat. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Extremely helpful. The only thing that I recommend to anyone who wants to do this repair, is to purchase the tool to remove the radiator hose clamp. I got it done with vise grips and channels locks, but it was a pain in the blessed assurance! Otherwise, simple repair.

Good video, I agree with a comment below about taking out the air box as one unit. Also, go to Home Depot and grab a large plastic water heater pan (screw a 1" cap onto the drain fitting) and slide it under the car to catch the antifreeze.

Good video as it was informative and only one item missed which I’m sure you did but didn’t mention was purging the air out of the system by using the cross slotted hex head you see on the topside of the housing by turning 1/4 turn to do this and returning to its closed position, checking and refilling coolant level as needed. All good my friend and again good video

You can also do this without removing the air cleaner box. Faster and simpler. Great video for being able to see in, but extra work is not required.

Definitely, DEFINITELY recommend draining about a gallon of coolant out of the radiator before doing this. Easy to capture from the outlet under the draincock into a clean container using a foot-long tube. So much coolant lost in this video! If I had thought to keep the radiator hose up when I pulled it off the t-stat housing, I would have lost none. (I lost maybe an 1/8th of a cup.)
Major PITA trying to get the bottom air filter housing back on the pin closest to the engine.

Man thanks for the video! I changed out mine, the hardest part was getting the clamp over the hose once I got the themostat in. I just used some pliers to hold the clamp open. I did have to move all that stuff liked you showed in the vid. I don't know how someone could work around the filter and such.

I changed mine in 5 minutes. Take a 10 reach down remove the 2 bolts. Fold over hose mark where housing is on hose with a marker. Take clamp off. Pull old one off. Put new one where old one was by your markings. Put hose clamp back on run the two bolts in. Done. I use very little playtex to insure a good seal. Then the bubble bleeder should talk some about. Thanks

You are most welcome Eldridge! P0128 engine code means your engine coolant is not getting to operating temperature quick enough to meet the engine normal spec. Check your engine coolant for a proper 50/50 coolant mix. If you have not serviced the coolant system in awhile this would be the place to start. Hope this helps!

Ditto on the evap. So far it seems to have been a ghost issue for us from a loose gas cap. We cleared the code with the handheld and it hasn’t coded for evap but a couple of times in the past five years. If there could be another issue please let us know. Seems to be a common issue for these vans.
Does the check engine light go away by itself after the replacement or do you have to disconnect the battery to reset? I’m doing this t stat replacement tomorrow. Thank you for the advice.
It will go off by itself. Make sure coolant is at proper level after repair
My recommendations:
1. No need to remove all that stuff at the beginning. If you use technique from #2, access is not a problem. Just need to move the power steering reservoir out of the way.
2. Remove screws, bend hose up for access, replace thermostat, and reconnect thermostat. All you have to do is make alignment marks on hose and thermostat and everything lines up perfectly. Way easier.
3. Don't mess with the bleeder. I did and when I tightened it back up the head twisted off. Not pleased. Much easier to just let the engine run and keep adding coolant as air works its way out.
4. Use locking pliers (VISE-GRIP) on that clamp. The pliers will easily hold the clamp open for as long as you need to move it out and back into position.
5. Before starting, use a file to dull that switchblade of a clip that will cut up the back of your hand while your work!
I removed that stuff to give me enough room to film and give you a good view. I agree with you, you could remove less if you wanted. That sucks about your bleed screw, I let the engine bleed itself and it works great. Another great idea with using Vicegrips and not the normal slip joint pliers like I did. (Yes I am going right down your list answering it all lol) LOL YES to #5!!!! That clip will get you over and over again. Great tips G Walker! Thanks for watching as well!
@@Sellthoseflippingcars #1 was just a suggestion for others; totally get how you need to remove stuff to make a video. #3 - Yeah, after getting another thermostat I bled it the old school way. MUCH easier. Kicked myself for even touching that bleed screw the first time. #4 - Necessity is the mother of invention. I only switched to VISE-GRIP after about giving myself carpal tunnel syndrome using slip joint pliers! :) Thanks and thanks for the video!

What do you do if you replace the thermostat and get a check engine code p0128
Your coolant temperature sensor is reading too low. Is your coolant old in the system? If your coolant is not mixed 50/50 it will not reach the temperature it needs to, to be "normal temperature" for the ECM.
@@Sellthoseflippingcars I had the thermostat replaced with a coolant flush. Not sure if its has cycled through yet
It could be an air bubble in the system. With the engine being cool, take the top off the coolant reservoir and squeeze the top radiator hose. Do that a few times and see if you have any air bubbles
@@Sellthoseflippingcars thanks it seems to be cleared out now. But the P0219A issues is a whole other issue that I had to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer. It might be much worst than I thought.

Thanks for the video and informative content but shop elsewhere besides Amazon, others need business also. Additionally, I recommend using a new constant tension clamp as well as covering the pulley and the belt area with shop rags as spilled coolant wreaks havoc with those. Hey! Great video! I got mine switched out lickety split but the light still hasn’t turned off. It’s not overheating. Any recommendations?
You need to bleed the air out of the system. Use the bleed screw cap that is located on the thermostat housing. Do not over torque the screw it is made out of plastic
I changed the thermostat. Drove 200 mi. Check engine with p0128 didn't go away. Engine Temps around 188on highway 208-216 idle here in Florida with Temps outside around 90.
I figure if it was a coolant sensor then it would not give accurate readings.
Only problem that concerns me is that when burping the system with no spill funnel after thermostat open it started boiling and spilling vigorously coolant around. Like everywhere around engine area
You need to wait until the engine is cool before opening the cap. There is a bleed screw on the top of the thermostat housing.

And do you know by any chance why p0128 might not go away
The engine coolant temperature sensor could be bad
Did this but know overheating not sure if I did something wrong but trying to diffuse out how to bleed air out of there is any.
At the top of your thermostat housing you will see a plastic screw. This is your bleed cap for your thermostat housing and your cooling system. Fill until there is no air and you are good to go! Great job!

I would use a refractometer and check the strength of the coolant and any debris. If it test good and is still at the 50/50 mix with no debris in it, then I would keep it. Let me know if you need help finding the tool needed. Thank you for watching!
Can you give me some advice how to properly change a head gasket and antifreeze removal from the engine compartment. Changing the thermostat didn't work, maybe operator error. Thought I got it right. But anyhow would you be willing to throw some more knowledge my way?
Did you bleed the bubbles out? There is a bleed screw on top of the thermostat housing
What is steering you towards the head gasket has failed?
i just opened the air box flipped the top part over and the bottom part of air pops out and flip that up and out of the way
the only thing i unscrewed was the thermostat, the 2 pieces lean against each other flipped up to stay out of the way

I changed mine but now it has a (new) small leak from the new thermostat housing. Any experience with duralast thermostats for this? Also, should I use some kind of permatex sealant?
If you purchased it locally I would return it and get a new one. You should not have to use any kind of rtV with this thermostat housing since it has a o ring. If you do have to use rTV it is because you have a leak.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to do this with as little mess as possible. You mention a clamp type tool to put on the radiator hose to prevent spilling. Do you have a link to something like that? All I get when I Google is regular clamps for the ends.

That was awesome! I was worried about doing it myself but I did it. Now do you have any good ideas for why my passenger side seat heater won’t work. I checked the fuses the fuse for it what corroded so I put a new one in but that didn’t help. The light for it inside comes on and then after about five seconds it goes off
After you pulled the corroded fuse out where you able to clean the female port of the fuse as well? Sometimes when there is corrosion on the fuse it will spread to the female side and will decrease voltage because of it.

Try a small file and if the spades or metal clasps get a little spread out, just push them gently back together with a small screwdriver.
Hi I did the steps that you show. But my service engine light still on. Is that supposed to happen. When will the light be off?
If the light is still on it means that you have an air pocket in the system. At the top of the thermostat housing there is a plastic bleed screw. Take a funnel and fill the coolant system from this bleed screw to make sure all of the air is out of the system.

No, use some soapy water to find out where exactly the air is coming from.
What effects can a bad thermostat cause I’ve been having coolant spring from somewhere, but I can’t tell where and I’ve been told different things that the thermostat could be bad, causing everything to overheat and making coolant spray out
Overheating multiple times can cause internal engine damage, it is not something to play with. Get it right and save your engine
