I think the 10000 hours reference from Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" refers to mastery and not to becoming an expert; and it refers to art, or at least this was the basis of the "The role of deliberate practice in the acquisition of expert performance" study. In IT the definition of an expert is probably more relaxed than in the arts.
There's also a quote from Bruce Lee, which depicts what it takes to become a master in martial arts: "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
I've heard folks discuss the Malcom Gladwell number and say that it's a misrepresentation. That 10,000 is to be the best of the best. Not sure what those same people say is needed to qualify as an expert. However, I get your 👉
