- Pensioners are “worried sick” about how they will heat their homes following winter fuel payment cuts, ministers have been warned ahead of a Commons vote on the changes.
Commons Leader Lucy Powell said a motion to approve the changes will be debated on September 10, with the Government facing a possible Labour backbench rebellion.
Ms Powell said the Government has taken “some really difficult decisions” that it “did not want to make”, including means testing the payment, although it is “not afraid” to debate the cuts.
Alex says: "Will there be a big rebellion against Labour?"

Take £10 a week off them as they get Free Accommodation, Free Heating, Free Meals, Free access to the NHS which includes prescriptions, Free Dental Treatment, Free Travel, list is endless so why should they get another £50 each per week.

Alot of people are very angry about cutting winter fuel. So many people will feel between two stools. Some people will have to make a decision either to eat or heat. This is a disgusting thing to do.

650 M.P.S claiming up to £3500 each for heating comes to £2.2 million pounds.
But the point is if you are means testing this allowance, shouldn't M.P.s also be means tested. If you use the same metric as for pensioners, then none of them would qualify .

Went on to the government website to see what they are claiming here are a few random examples - energy bills, council tax, utility bills, car mileage, travel, office rent, staff salaries, cleaning services, accommodation, mobile phone bills, TV license, the list goes on. Whatever difficult decision this Liebore government and Thieving Reeves makes it won't make one jot of difference to them. However, it will cause hardship to the rest of us. No austerity in the Westminster village everything is rosy.
May I suggest that Talk TV start to look at what MPs are claiming, and what hypocrites they are - we all have to pull together, shoulder the burden, tighten our belts,
and stop the winter fuel payments to the most needy. While our elected MPs voted by you, have their snouts well and truly in the trough.

Many pensioners are just above the threshold to receive pension credit but are still not rich, this will really hurt them. Maybe not giving away 8 billion for climate change repatriations abroad might be a better idea if they want to save money

The full new pension is 221 pounds a week. The pension credit cut off point is 218 pounds. Sheer cruelty.

It's the politics of envy !!! and trying to divide generations as they know pensioners remember how much better this country was before uncontrolled immigration. When they say pensioners are rich they forget that it could simply be people who bought a 3 bed semi in the south as a home, and paid through the nose for it. Mortgage rates have been from 20% to 6% from 60's to 00's, today's buyers have had 15 years of bank rate of half a percent, pensioners had no control over house inflation, three times they voted to reduce immigration which caused it to rise, now it's their fault. I THINK NOT!!!.

Good for you. When I started buying my first house with my boyfriend I was 30 and the interest rate was 17 percent. Then thanks to Thatcher closing everything down where I live in the north my boyfriend lost his job and struggled to find another for over a year.

I read this morning about a whistle blower stating that the asylum seekers were being put into hotels and flats being refurbished with flat screen T.V's and leather sofas. Reason given their mental health needs to be protected. What about our elderly's mental health, having to sit in the cold deciding whether to heat or eat.
So you can work hard and put a little savings away in case you ever need it badly ,but for saving a little you are rich enough to have your winter heat payment taken away from you just for trying to be sensible enough to save I certainly am not rich but have saved hard it’s certainly not right to keep this heating money from those who have been sensible is it ?

These pensioners are possibly the last generation who have worked most of their lives, paying taxes and NI. Some are ok financially, but there are plenty who are not and living on the poverty line. A neighbour died of hyperthermia in March this year, and she got the allowance last year. Coroner said at her inquest there was no food in the house and she was fully clothed in bed when found, how many more elderly will become victims this winter?

Being a poor pensioner in the South is no joke. Council tax is more than most in the North but we dont get better services. Band D is already costly for so many of us just because of the area we are in not for premier services we enjoy!
Why did the Government not simply reduce the fuel allowance to only one person per household, as a single pensioner has to cope on half what a pension couple get.

If the Labour party took the time to ensure that all eligible pensioners received Pension Credit, I think they would find that it would cost them more than imagined. It suits them that there are many old folk who are unaware that there is money for them. I now receive it after seeing Martin Lewis on TV and applied.
There should not be the need for pension credit all pensioners should be on the new state pension flat rate for everyone lnstead of differents rates if you retired before 2016,it probably costs millions in admin and so many people do not apply for it.

The UK pension is at least half of what most European Countries pay.
The system has been set up to make it as difficult as possible for a pensioner to claim for ANYTHING,whilst the boat people simply get it all handed to them.
