  • The combination of White Blue, in magic the gathering, also known as Azorius is one who aims to bring about a utopia for all, of finding perfection and order. In this MTG color pie study I will break down mtg color philosophy of Azorius. That way you can better understand the characters of Magic the Gathering, and hopefully learn more about yourself along the way. As part of the definitive duality series, this episode will lay out the fundamental philosophy of each color pair in magic the gathering.

@DiceTry They want what they believe is best for all without consulting others for their own perspective to help influence the end result so that they can truly achieve their proposed goal. White Blue demands other submit to their vision of a perfect reality rather than expanding their own perspective to best be of use to the very people they claim to care for.

Dice are you planning in some point in the future revisiting your shards & wedges series? Something that might be fun to explore is perhaps what shards & wedges look like with different colors as the bridge color or the "enemy" color in wedges. What would a Red focused shard of Jeskai look like, or a wedge of Naya where white is the common enemy? How does moving the colors around change when you change up the formation of them as well? The test you look ages ago can show results where say you had 30% Red / 20 % Black / 20% Blue, that's Grixis yes, but a Red focused shard. How does that differ from a Blue focused one or the traditional Black focused one?

We've got the 5 colors, the ravnica 10 double colors, the 10 tribes of Alara and Tarkir combos, but from where I'm sitting, that means there are 5/6 color combos that aren't named yet. theoretically quad color tribes each missing a color from their philosophy, and prismatic which doesn't have a cannon name, the community just tends to call 5 colored decks prismatic. I am wondering what kind of philosophy could be red/green/blue/black but not white... like a nomadic hermit maybe? Or Green/white/blue/black but not red... android society? • @TheJamesGamel
      @TheJamesGamel Рік тому +1

Dice has addressed Eldrazi before, in his colorless video so go give that a watch, however revisiting how the Eldrazi impact the colors, and how the colors react to them would be a very intresting video. The Eldrazi are to be simple, MTG natural cycle for the planes of MTG. The Eldrazi clear planes and make them ready to be born anew, for all things must die. We know the Eldrazi are not evil for they are just acting on instinct, fulfilling a purpose inherit to themselves as we saw from the conversation on Innastraud between Tameyo and the Eldrazi titan who was tricked into appearing there. The Eldrazi titan said they shouldn't be there, that the plane wasn't ready, so we know it isn't a desire to devour the entire multiverse, in fact the multiverse is too large to ever be fully devoured by 3 titans who have to work together to reset a plane of existence.

I suppose that it is fitting with the structyre of the video but I do hate to see the issue of anxiety in Azorius jumped over, and this in the game too. If a person abandons their reason and morality because it seems the reasonable thing to do, are they still white blue?
Interesting aside, at least some stoics held emotions to be a kind of judgement. Thus you could say that anxiety is uncertainty regarding a desired outcome.

I'm a Grixis (Black/Blue/Red) so when I look upon this outlook, I grit my teeth and shake my head, these kinds of people would dare to ensnare me, bind me down, and warp my mind and being so that I submit to their goals, ideals, and dictates. Freedom is too important to ever sacrifice for any order that would dare demand such a sacrifice. No security is worth the price of freedom.
The wedge of Jeskai is in my opinion, the only way to bring this combination to a better path. Red's empathy, love, freedom, and chaos fulfills every proposed goal of these colors, while helping to prevent the worst of these colors from coming to be.

I don't know why, but White scares me.

Although White/Black is also not the most pleasant... Perhaps the only option that I can accept and kind of understand is White/Green. Kinda.
Although, nevertheless, I also kinda understand White/Blue. But Azorius scares me.
Every time I think about this combination, I imagine a too perfect, crystal clear city, the same architecture, almost the same clothes, almost the same people, everything is perfect and sterile.
And this sterility and perfect sameness frightens me.
Driven to fanaticism, the ideas of this combination can create a truly terrifying personality.
Of course, I am sure that this combination can manifest itself in different ways, one way or another. We see too often that even one color can show itself in different ways and looking at it from different angles, you can see different things.

It brings otherwise sane strong admirable people into a mindset that binds them in chains, imagine smiling cheerful slaves working to enslave others all while proclaiming it is for the betterment of all that we willingly toss aside our dignity courage and humanity by becoming soulless robots in their hellscape.

Well, any idea taken to its limits and fanaticism will be intimidating.
And although the same Boros as the guild looks intimidating, I suppose how a person with the same set of colors can turn out to be a very pleasant person.
      Or a terrible tyrant.
With colours, you can never guess for sure.
And, yes, I find Blue very close to me.
But I'm not sure yet where I am in this color pie.
Some time ago, I took that big test where they show a bunch of terms and sentences, and he showed me the result of Temur.
And I don't seem to mind?
I definitely see myself among Blue and Green.
I'm terrible at math so definitely not Quandrix, but the potential for this color combination is endless.
However, I'm not sure about the third color. Do I have it at all?
Temur and Sultai are good options.
But in this case, Red or Black will be as a secondary support color, since if they do appear, then they are more restrained.
And given that Dimir and Golgari are closer to me than Gruul, and the Sultai clan itself is aesthetically and thematically more pleasing, so far I'm leaning towards their color variant.
Where black represents not ambition and imperiousness and ruthlessness, but rather silence, secrecy and the desire to look into the darkest corners of the universe.
There is no such thing as forbidden knowledge. however, sometimes their use is not the most reasonable option.

Red shows us how we are perfect, just as we are, Green shows us this world is fair and nurturing for all, and it is Black who drives the need to have the best for each person, so long as all attempt to get that for themselves.
The search for perfection and an ideal world are only ideals held by idealists due to their own perspective, they themselves can not see that perfection is all around them, an ideal world is one filled with the possibility for all things, if one wishes to observe perfection look upon the arts and see the heart of those who create.

I can't fault White/Blue for their dedication, for devoting yourself to that in which you hope to achieve requires great willpower and an unwavering focus, both are admirable qualities for how difficult it is to uphold. Azorius as it is shown on Ravnica shows us what happens when these colors are at their worst, disfunctional and oversweeping as they loose their sight in their focus on details. It's no wonder when Baal showed up on Ravnica, he went about optimizing the Azorius, they were most in need of the effiency they themselves are suppose to value.
I myself am Grixis, and seem only able to stomach White when it pairs with Red, a force that conflicts White away from it's own delusions. When Green, Blue, or even Black is paired with White, seems only to enable their faith, their hope, their delusions in reality, helping White on it's path, one that only seems unachievable because White can not see the dead end it is running into.

If one were to ask me, I'd say that a successful society needs a good combination of most Colors.
A country's laws must be set up in a WUR mindset. Promoting community and self improvement, but not forgetting the needs of the individual.
A country's laws must be enforced by WU individuals; those who won't let a crime slide because "muh feelings". There must be flexibility to discern and account for honest mistakes, but tolerance for unrepentant repeat offenders must be stamped out.
A country's boarders must be protected by WR individuals; those who have the internal fire to protect their homeland, but recognize they need a structured team to actually pull it off.
A country's spiritual guidance, for those who choose such a path, should be led by WG individuals; people that can calmly and patiently guide others down a morally upright path.
Notice I don't specify anything with B in the mix. That's because I don't think B philosophy as a whole belongs in the mix. A person needs enough ambition to achieve their goals, but those with too much ambition and sufficient power are prone to use that power for their own benefit. Look at 90% of IRL politicians in the US, Canada, & EU. It's a rare day when you get that 10% politician that wants to use their position of power to make life better for the citizenry.

I like these videos but coming off the Dimir video, it really shows me the creator's black-bias. It's okay, we all identify more with one color or another. But all colors represent aspects of humanity. No one color is more or less human. And every color, in pursuit of their goal is an idealist. An absolute ego-ist is as much of an idealist as a utopioanist. In reality, life is much more balanced, and it is only ideology that makes us see as one aspect as more "realistic." No person is an island, and no individual can be subsumed into the collective. This is true for all spectrums.

I identify with White-Blue, but it's with the Morality and Technology halves rather than Azorius' anti-Red Order & Logic. Not only does Morality & Technology emphasize combining Godly religion and applying knowledge (i.e. a healthy combination of faith anf science) over man-made government and the hoarding of knowledge, but it also allows for a nuance of Red in order to avoid the sociopathy in anti-Red and the reckless romanticism of mono-Red.

If we're accepting the baseline premise that Azorius does what it does out of innate idealism, then the simplest deffinition of the guiding philosophy behind white/blue boils down to, "The road to a fascist hellscape is paved in good intentions."

What an absolutely absurd philosophy. I'm Mono-Red, so I admit I have bias, but if I, or anyone else, devoted themselves to a world that could be, with rigidity, discipline, and objectivity, then it's a recipe for disaster. Life is about being happy, enjoying every moment, and there's no way you can do that by limiting yourself. Also, this is easily the color combo of control freaks. You can't control everything and everyone without them wanting to put your head on a pike, and every tyrant in history has Azorius in their identity, hiding behind their ideas of order at the cost of sometimes millions of lives. If the goal of absolute order and perfection is unattainable, then there's no reason to seek it. Also, if the goal is an idealized utopia for all, then that goes back to the tyrants. Utopia is dystopia, because perfection is a myth. All this pair wants to do is take their subjective viewpoints and force them on others while claiming they're objective. It's truly sickening. Only by following our hearts can we reach happiness. If that means chaos, then so be it. I'll take chaos over authoritarianism and fascism any day of the week.
Despite that, it's a good video. It properly explains Azorius and why it deserves to be ignored more than any other philosophy.

I’m trying to empathize, but this is such a train wreck of a comment, to the point that I’m not sure it wasn’t written by a teenager roleplaying. Without the philosophies of W/U, society itself would not be able to stand. Everyone talks about wanting absolute freedom until someone else steals your stuff or beats the shit out of you just because they want to. Society does not function without ethical laws and regulations. The social contract is kind of important. Objectivity, discipline, idealism, these are all pretty important concepts to humanity. The guy that lies around all day eating bacon for every meal because his feelings tell him it tastes good and says whatever he wants because “that’s authentic “ dies of heart failure and hurts those around him. Azorius doesn’t say you can’t have passion or desire, but it does tell you that maybe you should think about the rational and ethical consequences of your actions. Such authoritarian buzzkills.
Most “tyrants” are not W/U, that is just bizarre projection. It is also by definition opposed to fascism, I’m not really sure where you get that idea; fascism is definitionally a Orzhov philosophy. It can be authoritarian at its worst, but those are not the same thing.
Trying to say that we shouldn’t strive for improvement because “perfection is a myth” is like saying that it’s okay to be an asshole because you acknowledge you are one. Millions of people are starving that could be fed. We have more empty homes than we do homeless people. So many of the injustices of the world are within our power to fix, but I guess we shouldn’t try because that might infringe on some landlord’s ability to be a dick or a billionaire’s “right” to fuck over his workers.
It’s genuinely shocking to me how the combination of colors that ask you to live a more ethical life for you and those around you gets such staunch pushback.

@khyris5767 First of all, I'm neither a teenager nor a roleplayer. I do like to write fiction, but this is my honest opinion. I'll respond to your points one at a time.
"Without the philosophies of W/U, society itself would not be able to stand." Oh, do I love hearing this one. There will always be a form of society, and the only rule I want in my ideal one isn't "Do whatever you want," it's "Do whatever you want within the confines of empathy." I want people to treat each other kindly, fairly, and lovingly, but I want them to do so not because they fear jail time, fines, ostracization, etc. but because they understand that they're as important as the person next to them, but they themselves are still important.
You cry about injustices, but what do you mean? Justice and ethics are extremely subjective terms. Slavery is still legal and practiced in many parts of the world. Beating your children as form of discipline is still seen as a good practice in many nations and cultures, and is legal in many of those nations. There are many laws that exist to protect the rich and exploit people worldwide. My problem isn't just that those laws exist, but that people treat them as sacred and inviolable when they're clearly causing harm. Azorius protects what you consider Orzhov to flourish. Not surprising, because they make up two parts of the worst shard, Esper, and are centered around the color with the worst philosophy: Blue. I could write an entire research paper on why I hate Blue's philosophy so much, but I'll give you a brief rundown: I reject the idea of perfection, therefore, I also vehemently reject Blue.
And before you claim I'm a moral relativist, because all Azorius sympathizers seem to love calling me that, I'll tell you that I'm not. While I do believe that laws and ethics are subjective, the one thing that is objective is human sentiment (For more on this, read David Hume). That's why I hate laws as a whole, because barring the ones that exist to make sure people don't treat each other poorly (which is by no means all, or even most of the laws), I view the rest of them as nothing more than "one size fits some" mandates that force everyone to dance to the same tune whether they like it or not.
I'm not advocating for freedom from consequences, either. The examples of the man eating bacon, and the people mugging and beating others can, do, and should have consequences. However, those consequences should be tailored to the situation at hand. What if the guy eating bacon is doing so because he has deep psychological trauma (as is the case with many people who have eating disorders), and what if the assaulters and muggers didn't do it for fun, but because they needed to feed their family with the money they stole? Does that change your perspective of the situation? Azorius says "Anyone who does x, will be treated as y, without exception." What makes me angry is that it's forcing objectivity in situations that require more than just writing it off as a moral or legal failure to situations that have nuance, and are therefore subjective. That's my idea of a "social contract," to use your terminology.
Mindfulness and rationality are not exclusive to Azorius, and they can and do exist in all the other colors. Claiming that Azorius has a monopoly on that as a color combo is as wrong as saying that Red has a monopoly on violence, or Black has a monopoly on evil actions. It's inaccurate and unfair, much like Azorius itself in my view. Continuing on the next comment.

I couldn't stop laughing reading this. Every single tyrant in history claimed to be for the same things: Order, stability, peace, reason, justice. They all claimed that they knew what was right, they knew what needed to be done and how to do it, and they used either religion, the best understanding of science at the time, or their definition of peace to enforce it on others who do not consent to it. Orzhov rides on the coattails of Azorius, and Azorius ignores it at best or justifies it at worst. Even then, what do Orzhov and Azorius have in common besides making up two parts of Esper? White mana. I'm so sick of White mana and its ideals getting the image of being "good," when both in-game, in the lore, and in real life, they create the most sickening form of evil: One that believes it is just.
Compare that to Rakdos. Rakdos knows what it is, it knows what it does, and it couldn't care less about what other people think about it. You might think that's horrible, but I think it takes guts to look at the world and say "I know who I am, and I am not ashamed." That, and Rakdos knows full well it could fall into evil actions. It's an honest color pair, and one that I respect as a mono-red.
White mana, on the other hand? If you're its enemy, then you're evil, you're wrong, you're immoral, and if you don't like it, then you simply don't understand it? Within the game's lore, look up Dovin Baan and Elesh Norn. Azorius and Mono-White respectively. Were they good people? Did they do good things? Were they simply deluded, or did they have good intentions that the other people didn't recognize? Have you ever heard the phrase "The road to hell is paved with good intentions?" That's White mana in a nutshell. Look up the abuses of any major religious or political institution performed in the name of spreading or protecting their ideals. Are they simply misunderstood? Were their actions justified? No. They weren't. And it's why I hate the idea of any kind of state.
"Oh, well then you should hate Orzhov, too!" Yes. I do, but I hate it because of White. Black is the color that acknowledges a lot of what I'm saying. I hate Azorius more, though. Why?
      Continued in the next comment.

When I say "perfection is a myth" I don't mean we shouldn't strive for self-improvement. I mean we shouldn't strive for something that doesn't objectively exist. Have you ever seen the movie "Equilibirum"? In that film, there's a clear fascist state that forces its population to take drugs to eliminate their emotions. Why? Because it's more efficient, more "perfect." But is it really? It's a dystopian nightmare where anyone who doesn't conform gets executed. Art doesn't exist, neither does any form of expression, and showing any feeling beyond pride in the state and in your job is an aberration that must be eliminated. Guess who grew up in a similar environment? Me. Guess who grew up with parents who actively complained about everything and everyone, even if they performed to the best of their abilities? Me. Guess who went through a series of systems to try and correct my "emotional outbursts" because it made others uncomfortable? Me.
Perfection is a myth because it doesn't exist, and any attempts to replicate it are done at costs that I, and many others, find inexcusable, which is why utopia is dystopia. Yes, I have an ideal image of how I want the world to be, but I fully recognize that it has its flaws and will have major headaches throughout. However, I also believe my ideal is the best because allows people to be who they are, to love from the heart, and do as they wish so long as they are not actively harming themselves or others. What Azorius wants is something it cannot have.
Those issues you mentioned are the direct fault of Azorius. Why isn't can't homeless people to simply pick an empty home and live in it? Why isn't food something everyone can and should have easy and free access to? Why can't we arrest any billionaire or landlord that exploits people the way they do? Do you want an answer? Because the law prevents all of that. Because we do not live in a world where empathy is the only rule. Because Azorius exists. The law is the law is the law, and anyone who says otherwise is a horrible or stupid human being.
Azorius does want you to live a more ethical life. But they want you to do it on their subjective terms which they push as objective because if they didn't present it as such, then they'd lose all their power. I see the trap. I refuse to fall for it.

    If I may say something,
Blue white is to communist to me. Blue white is the most oppressive colors. To ideal not pragmatic enough. Perfection and the sublime will never be reached , it goes against human nature. I wrote a college paper about this topic like years ago in 2010. I wish I still had it to share it.
