I recommend watching on UA-cam the documentary made 2 years ago in tribute to the 20th anniversary of Tim Maia's death. In addition to excerpts from the singer's shows, there are several testimonials from people who lived with Tim Maia that show the true personality of this genius of Brazilian music. Unfortunately, the documentary doesn't have English subtitles. I respect if you don't like to watch a movie that portrays the life of a deceased character, but in the case of the movie Tim Maia, I believe you will like it, as the story was very well told and the actor who portrayed Tim Maia embodied the artist's soul. It's worth checking out.

The Disco age was full throttle in Brazil at 78, and songs like Afim de Voltar, Acenda o Farol, Sossego and All I Want (yes, the song was recorded in english) are true Brazilian Disco's masterpiece. I know a little about his life, and the person who he was... Also, you have to put this together with the time he lived on Brazil, cos at that time Brazil was experiencing a huge musical movement about almost all genres (samba, jazz, pop, forró, bossa nova, etc) called MPB... several of those musicians had even creatted a style by their own, like Tim Maia did, and also Milton Nascimento, Ney Matogrosso, Oswaldo Montenegro, Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Djavan, etc.. some even created more than one trademark: Caetano Veloso, for example, and Chico Buarque (though Chico composes mostly samba, he composes and sings everything, even Opera lol.. and I not kidding), and ALL or ALMOST ALL of those guys were friends or great friends, they were always together to sing, talk, share ideas, compose musics with thenselves... well, one of the best songs of Tim, the records I mean, is Dia de Domingo on wich he sings with Gal Costa... they both are amazing. Also, in this time, the people who used to work with the musicians... the others musicians, those guys we never heard about, cos they work on backstage, but they make the arranjement, the back sound, the instruments, sometimes even the melody, the guys who are the guys... they were great, at this time. Paulinho Tapajós, for example, Sivuca too... Sivuca was amazing.. And, yeah.. Tim Maia was a great human being too. He lived on USA sometime, he made on full english songs album.. google Tim Maia in english, you will find it... He used to steal things to live, on USA (I saw he saing this in a interview, he even made jokes about that... how to enter a market and steal a roasted chicken "cos americans uses those large coats, I could put even two chickens inside the coats"... lol..). He was arrested sometimes here in Brazil, even for the military goverment, some people says he got tortured too.. he had a sad life. And then he became famous cos the amazing songs he was doing here, introducing Soul to Brazilian market, but not a pure Soul, a Soul mixed with samba, with jazz, with brazilian ways to live, think, have fun... a Soul mixed with Tim Maia.
He has lived in 19 different places in NYC. He met the great soul musicians of that time in US. Furthermore, he was a troublemaker there, stealing radio cars and shit like that. He recorded a compact disc in USA before returning to BRazil to make soul music popular over here. From Wiki: "To survive in the country, he even worked in cafeterias in the region. At first he resided in Tarrytown, with the family of a well-known client of his father's. In 1961, he moved to New York, and in 1963, with a group of three friends, they decided to travel to the south of the United States. With a stolen car and doing petty theft to finance the trip, which earned him five arrests, Tim and his friends traveled through nine states before arriving in Florida. In Daytona Beach, Tim had his final arrest for possession of marijuana, where he was deported back to Brazil."

This track belongs to an album Tim Maia composed when he had joined a New Religious Movement named "Rational Culture", whose main scripture was called "Universe in Disenchantment." My grandfather was a practitioner. Tim had a rapturous conversion, quit drugs and alcohol and enforced that on his band as well. The album was meant to convey the message of his newfound religion. Later on, Tim would fall into his own disenchantment with Rational Culture and quit it, going back to the unruly life of dabbling in drugs and drinking heavily.
This music was created when Tim was part of the "cultura racional" sect. He was obstinated and forced all the band to be part of the sect. He was so genious that even in this religious album the musics are extraordinary. The sect it's a mix of OVNI and Ubanda, very diferent even for Brazil. this episode appears in the Tim Maia's movie.
Just remembered that in one music he says "Buy the book universe in disenchantment" and the disc was recorded that way, like one advertising of youtube in the music. He was ahead of his time 😛.

Universe in Disenchantment was a veeeeeeeeeery strange cult. Tim Maia was absolutely high on mescaline when a friend of him handed him some of the cult books and two days later he entered a heavy self-imposed detox, only wore white, forced all his bandmates to stop drinking, smoking, everything. He would only sing about this cult, and a fun trivia: the vinyls from his cult-phase are among the most expensive in brasilian vinyl culture. Racional Vol.1 Racional Vol.2 And in my opinion, when sober, the man was going sharp AS FUCK. pardon my french haha. The movie people recommended you to watch is kinda cool. a bit rushed, but entirely based on Nelson Motta, one of his best friends, Biography on Tim Maia. Some wacky wacky tales on the book.

Amo Tim Maia escuto desde criança! Este álbum dele é massa! Era uma raridade antes do UA-cam existir. Li uma vez que ele probiou de vender, se decepcionou com a religião. Mas o som é massa, muito bom. Eu comprei o CD há tempos na Galeria do Rock em SP. Gosto muito da faixa O Caminho do Bem. Boa escolha Goony!!!
Estou no meio do vídeo ainda, mas vou comentar e depois corrijo se tiver falado sobre. Na década de 1970 ele conheceu essa religião "Cultura Racional" e aderiu ao movimento (não lembro se mostra no filme dele). Ele ficou obcecado a ponto de regravar todas as letras desse álbum que ele já tinha pronto, e aí virou o Racional. A gravadora (RCA) não quis gravar por conta do tema religioso, e ele lançou seu próprio selo: SEROMA (SEbastião ROdrigues MAia). Depois, desiludido com a religião, ele mandou retirar todos os álbuns de circulação e destruiu tudo. Hoje, um vinil Racional pode chegar até $600 dólares. A letra toda ele fala da Cultura Racional: como é bom ver o que é o 'certo' mesmo estando no escuro, saber de onde veio antes de nascer e para onde vai ao morrer, saber de verdade o que é o mal e o bem, como é bom vir 'da pureza', como é bom conhecer o desencanto (depois que entra na religião, se vê o mundo com outros olhos)... Então, uma tradução paralela de "Que beleza!" seria "How good". Isso vale pra qualquer religião, mas ele estava especificamente falando da Cultura Racional, assim como todas as outras músicas dos álbuns Racional 1 e 2. Seria legal se reagisse ao álbum Racional todo numa live. Apesar das letras de cunho religioso, o instrumental é puro funk (porque ele já tinha gravado grande parte das músicas).

The movie is an adaptation of an incredibly well-crafted biographical book called "Vale Tudo - O Som e a Fúria de Tim Maia" written by journalist and music producer Nelson Motta, a friend and fan of Tim. Unfortunately, I couldn't find if the book has been translated into English. However, I did find an English book that seems good, "Tim Maia Racional vols. 1 & 2" written by Allen Thayer, which focuses more on the period when Tim was involved in the cult. Salve!
Tim Maia was arrested in USA, and stayed a time in prison. Two of his songs have samples from USA, "Que Beleza" and "Descobridor dos Sete Mares", and the sample probably came from "The Trammps". But he has hundreds of original songs as interesting as those that he sampled.

Thats actually like a gospel album . No reference to drugs , he was 100% clean by the time of this album. He was trying to get souls for his cult. The album was a comercial failure at the time but decades later was considered one of the most important in Brazilian music

At this time Tim was not taking drougs, not even alcohol, he only wore white clothes and "forced" the musicians of his band to do the same!hahah He reliased two albuns called Tim Maia Racional vol. 1 and Tim Mais Racional vol. 2. But he didn't stay in that religion for long time!!! Hahhaha

Conforme o documentário feito pelo Bial que saiu no streaming da Globo Play, diz que algumas musicas já existiam antes de ele entrar na fase racional (gravar o disco), porém ele mudou as letras readaptando do livro, em suma, em algum universo alternativo, temos Tim Racional com outras letras...jamais saberemos

I know a little about his life, and the person who he was... Also, you have to put this together with the time he lived on Brazil, cos at that time Brazil was experiencing a huge musical movement about almost all genres (samba, jazz, pop, forró, bossa nova, etc) called MPB... several of those musicians had even creatted a style by their own, like Tim Maia did, and also Milton Nascimento, Ney Matogrosso, Oswaldo Montenegro, Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Djavan, etc.. some even created more than one trademark: Caetano Veloso, for example, and Chico Buarque (though Chico composes mostly samba, he composes and sings everything, even Opera lol.. and I not kidding), and ALL or ALMOST ALL of those guys were friends or great friends, they were always together to sing, talk, share ideas, compose musics with thenselves... well, one of the best songs of Tim, the records I mean, is Dia de Domingo on wich he sings with Gal Costa... they both are amazing.
Also, in this time, the people who used to work with the musicians... the others musicians, those guys we never heard about, cos they work on backstage, but they make the arranjement, the back sound, the instruments, sometimes even the melody, the guys who are the guys... they were great, at this time. Paulinho Tapajós, for example, Sivuca too... Sivuca was amazing..
And, yeah.. Tim Maia was a great human being too. He lived on USA sometime, he made on full english songs album.. google Tim Maia in english, you will find it... He used to steal things to live, on USA (I saw he saing this in a interview, he even made jokes about that... how to enter a market and steal a roasted chicken "cos americans uses those large coats, I could put even two chickens inside the coats"... lol..). He was arrested sometimes here in Brazil, even for the military goverment, some people says he got tortured too.. he had a sad life. And then he became famous cos the amazing songs he was doing here, introducing Soul to Brazilian market, but not a pure Soul, a Soul mixed with samba, with jazz, with brazilian ways to live, think, have fun... a Soul mixed with Tim Maia.

He has lived in 19 different places in NYC. He met the great soul musicians of that time in US. Furthermore, he was a troublemaker there, stealing radio cars and shit like that. He recorded a compact disc in USA before returning to BRazil to make soul music popular over here. From Wiki: "To survive in the country, he even worked in cafeterias in the region. At first he resided in Tarrytown, with the family of a well-known client of his father's. In 1961, he moved to New York, and in 1963, with a group of three friends, they decided to travel to the south of the United States. With a stolen car and doing petty theft to finance the trip, which earned him five arrests, Tim and his friends traveled through nine states before arriving in Florida. In Daytona Beach, Tim had his final arrest for possession of marijuana, where he was deported back to Brazil."

This track belongs to an album Tim Maia composed when he had joined a New Religious Movement named "Rational Culture", whose main scripture was called "Universe in Disenchantment." My grandfather was a practitioner. Tim had a rapturous conversion, quit drugs and alcohol and enforced that on his band as well. The album was meant to convey the message of his newfound religion. Later on, Tim would fall into his own disenchantment with Rational Culture and quit it, going back to the unruly life of dabbling in drugs and drinking heavily.

This music was created when Tim was part of the "cultura racional" sect. He was obstinated and forced all the band to be part of the sect. He was so genious that even in this religious album the musics are extraordinary. The sect it's a mix of OVNI and Ubanda, very diferent even for Brazil. this episode appears in the Tim Maia's movie.

Universe in Disenchantment was a veeeeeeeeeery strange cult.
Tim Maia was absolutely high on mescaline when a friend of him handed him some of the cult books and two days later he entered a heavy self-imposed detox, only wore white, forced all his bandmates to stop drinking, smoking, everything.
He would only sing about this cult, and a fun trivia: the vinyls from his cult-phase are among the most expensive in brasilian vinyl culture.

Estou no meio do vídeo ainda, mas vou comentar e depois corrijo se tiver falado sobre.
Na década de 1970 ele conheceu essa religião "Cultura Racional" e aderiu ao movimento (não lembro se mostra no filme dele). Ele ficou obcecado a ponto de regravar todas as letras desse álbum que ele já tinha pronto, e aí virou o Racional. A gravadora (RCA) não quis gravar por conta do tema religioso, e ele lançou seu próprio selo: SEROMA (SEbastião ROdrigues MAia). Depois, desiludido com a religião, ele mandou retirar todos os álbuns de circulação e destruiu tudo. Hoje, um vinil Racional pode chegar até $600 dólares.
A letra toda ele fala da Cultura Racional: como é bom ver o que é o 'certo' mesmo estando no escuro, saber de onde veio antes de nascer e para onde vai ao morrer, saber de verdade o que é o mal e o bem, como é bom vir 'da pureza', como é bom conhecer o desencanto (depois que entra na religião, se vê o mundo com outros olhos)... Então, uma tradução paralela de "Que beleza!" seria "How good".
Isso vale pra qualquer religião, mas ele estava especificamente falando da Cultura Racional, assim como todas as outras músicas dos álbuns Racional 1 e 2.
Seria legal se reagisse ao álbum Racional todo numa live. Apesar das letras de cunho religioso, o instrumental é puro funk (porque ele já tinha gravado grande parte das músicas).

The movie is an adaptation of an incredibly well-crafted biographical book called "Vale Tudo - O Som e a Fúria de Tim Maia" written by journalist and music producer Nelson Motta, a friend and fan of Tim. Unfortunately, I couldn't find if the book has been translated into English.
However, I did find an English book that seems good, "Tim Maia Racional vols. 1 & 2" written by Allen Thayer, which focuses more on the period when Tim was involved in the cult.

Tim Maia was arrested in USA, and stayed a time in prison. Two of his songs have samples from USA, "Que Beleza" and "Descobridor dos Sete Mares", and the sample probably came from "The Trammps". But he has hundreds of original songs as interesting as those that he sampled.

there is a book written by his friend and famous producer called Nelson Mota. The movie is based on this book and is pretty faithful. Tim Maia's story is so rich, the stories, the confusions, the cultura racional and even its poetic ending.

Thats actually like a gospel album . No reference to drugs , he was 100% clean by the time of this album. He was trying to get souls for his cult. The album was a comercial failure at the time but decades later was considered one of the most important in Brazilian music

Conforme o documentário feito pelo Bial que saiu no streaming da Globo Play, diz que algumas musicas já existiam antes de ele entrar na fase racional (gravar o disco), porém ele mudou as letras readaptando do livro, em suma, em algum universo alternativo, temos Tim Racional com outras letras...jamais saberemos
