Another 22 y/o that seriously struggles with the glare from new headlights. I wish there was some regulation on it and also part of the state safety inspection covered how your headlights are aimed for the people that get aftermarket ones.
5:30 Alex is really amazing, I think you should invite him on the podcast and talk about EVs and hybrids, he's very down to earth and one of the most prepared and knowledgeable car reviewer around. He also lives off grid, a very interesting person.
I had a civic type R ep3. The early 00s bread van looking one. They handle so great and are so practical and you have the gear stick up on the dashboard. That would be a cool cheap import for you guys in the US.
The first gen Amarok isn't related to the Touareg, it's a full body on frame truck, but no low range transfer case (except in one Australia only model). The second gen however is platform shared with Ford and is a Ranger underneath, and available with the 2.3 Ecoboost, so presumably would be much easier to sell in the US.
I've been rocking "the yellows", a al "Br-angelina in Mr. and Mrs. Smith", for years for night driving. Cuts the glare, while being too dim. I just leave a pair in all my cars.
I had rented a 2020 mustang convertible that was a couple of years old at the time that had the same issue with the rear quarter windows. Had to push them up by hand really frequently.
Ivan Capote, Miguel Flores, and Christian Pelphrey walk into a bar. When they emerge hours later, all that remains in the parking lot are a 986 Boxster, a 991.1 Carrera S, and a Mustang GT350. Which car belongs to each person?
As someone who has worked at dealers and independent shops as a Service Advisor here in Cali, I can speak on the Cat converter thing... You need to run either the OEM cats or a CARB approved cat in California. The Smog stations have the part numbers that match the vehicle, and they need to be printed on the cats. If you buy a non-CARB third party Cat, you basically wasted your money and will have to buy one of those other two options. The CARB cats sometimes need an exhaust shop to weld/install them since they are universal for multiple models sometimes. A WAY better example I've seen first hand than the Prius, is the 2004+2005 Legacy/Outback PZEV model, which is a Cali only car with special cats and fuel lines. The Cats when the pandemic started and prices of Palladium and such skyrocketed, went up to $9,000!!! Yes, that much for the OEM cats, and those cats fail prematurely. I explicitly tell people to AVOID those years of non-Turbo Legacy/Outbacks, unless you want to do a full WRX/STI swap which is probably cheaper LOL! Those cars themselves are worth $5,000 MAX in mint condition low miles. Right now, the MSRP for the two cat sections of that car are $3,188 + $3,694 according to Subarus parts software. Madness. The Non-PZEV OEM cats from a couple years early are just ~$1500 or so same as that Prius mentioned, which I would consider to be innexpensive for factory cats.
I live in the LA area and I have seen at least 5 Dodge Challenger RT 392s on Turo renting for about $60 a day if you rent it for the week and they are practically brand new. To find cars like these you have to use a computer, not your phone and make your search area cover Ventura to Riverside to San Diego basically give yourself a 200 mile radius and you will find lots of cool cars for a good price. Also you need to search 2 or 3 days in advance at the bare minimum with 7 being perfect. Try to start your rental on a Monday if possible because that's when there are more cars available. The closer you move to the weekend there seems to be fewer choices. And if you already have great car insurance, save yourself their rental insurance which I hear is a pain in the ass. Most people renting cars on Turo have lots of other cars because it's a business for them. Their cars are mostly brand new and very well priced. It's the people with one car only that try to charge you up the ass and have lots of stipulations about what you can do with their cars and they try to monitor you throughout your entire rental. These are the people I avoid just on principal no matter the price. There have been lots of complaints from renters claiming they were being charged for damages that were already there and should not be considered damage. Also, make sure you show up on time at pick up and drop off with a full tank of gas and clean to avoid any problems with them. I use Turo all the time and drive a different new car every week.
I think part of the headlight problem is headlights arent aimed properly from the factory. I've had a few family members come to me asking why they get flashed all the time in their new car. I always say check your headlight aiming. After they finally check they report back that after adjusting it they dont get flashed as much.
+1 for the metion of Sunny GTi-R. A good friend of mine owned one and I've also owned one. There's still two around in my town, both owned by Nissan tragics like myself :D Little rocketships they are, but became pricy to keep on the road because of parts availability. Would own one again though!
For your kitchen timer watch, what about an alarm instead of a chrono? I have a 60s bulova alarm with a second crown that operates the alarm hand. Having the alarm connected to the minute hands instead of hours might be possible
Underrated: the non-GTi-R, mildly hot N14 Pulsar/Sentra/Sunny models. GTI 3 doors with either SR18DE or SR20DE, SSS 5 door with SR20DE. Cheap, reliable, fun to chuck around, no worry about blowing up the gearbox like in a GTi-R. Honourable mention for the Sentra GT Cup cars from NZ - road legal spec race cars. 1600cc, cage, ready to race one make series. Sought after now as they mostly got raced to death.
But a very NZ viewpoint Nissan's were built in Wiri. It would be like me recommending a Clio 2.0 Cup to you in NZ. A basic bitch car in Europe, but if you own a Renault in NZ it's a niche thing and not something you find bits at pickapart. The US and North America they only got the NX1600 in the N14 platform. Here in Europe the JDM people are like the American car owners in NZ. Having the steering wheel on the wrong side is part of the appeal to people who want to show they are different.
I've always really wanted A Quiet Greatness, but it has unfortunately been out of my financial reach. I hope they make a more affordable version in the future. Myron is a wonderful follow and I love chatting with him.
I had a 97 Probe GT automatic in high school....it was okay, but the transmission was terrible. Also, the US cars got the KL03 2.5 V6 with 160hp, while everyone else got the KLZE with 200hp.
Cat got stolen in my gen 2 prius. Totaled the car becase when i brought it into a shop they said the only way to fix it and pass emissions (i live in CO) was to put on an OE cat that was going to cost 3500 dollars for the whole install. 1500 bucks sounds like a decent price to me.
I use to love driving at night on road trips because there’s so much less traffic but it’s almost unbearable now with even normal cars blinding me let alone some of the crazy bro dozers and semi trucks with 10 high power LEDS on for no reason
My 2023 honda civic manual LX only has adaptive radar cruise. You cannot turn it off. It can be a pain in the ass most of the time… Braking and acting crazy. I would like to have the option to turn it off or not have it.
Thats how it was coming from my e36 coupe and getting my 92 Jaguar vanden plas. Which is surprising how similar it is to the Bentley with Connolly leather and wood. My door locks look the same and i have those floor mats as well.

Re 50k 3 car garage: I tried to buy a 2020 Lexus ES Hybrid this past summer. Dealer wouldn't take $38,000...well, they did 6 weeks after I walked away and sold it to someone else. sigh.

Headlight glare is so bad i sometimes wear sunglasses at night in certain traffic conditions. Definitely not an age thing. Everyone i talk to complain about it.
Speaking of headlights. Does every Toyota, particularly the corolla, with HID based lighting have a bad flicker? At first i thought it was juat that i was coming down hill or something on other cars so i was seeing their light at a odd angle. However, it does not seem to matter, but it typically is only Toyota vehicles that i see it on. Corollas, Siennas, and some trucks. Rarely, almost never on the Camary
Surprised your parents don’t register their cars in SC instead of CT. CT charges property taxes on cars, and it was advantageous for my parents to change their residency to FL and spend 181 days out of CT which avoids CT income tax, and then all three of their cars are registered in FL which saves $$$ in property tax on the cars.

Digging having a main topic for the crew shows! First bit it catching up with recent events/news then jumping to the main topic is great!
I dig banter - topics are cool - LA anecdotes are killer. Zingers are appreciated.
I’m 22 and headlight glare is awful. It’s not just an age thing
Headlights have gotten so much brighter over the past couple decades. Then they're misaimed and it sucks.
Complete agree! I have a Sudan and contintly think people are flashing their high beams

I don't think the 22b body was ever used in WRC from my memory. I think it was built to commemorate the success of their rallying.
Correct. Much like the Nismo 400R, It was a celebration of their effort, not a homologation car.
