- Here is a video on how to get your TR-8S sync'ed with Ableton so that it plays/records on beat. I also show you how to get rid of that annoying 'Doubling" sound when playing through Ableton. Koin us on Facebook at / 442726646143498
You really do have a video for every issue, sir. Roland should pay you for all you did. Many thanks !
Thanks for this. I wanted to figure out how to do this in Reason. You got me halfway there by showing what setting to have on the TR-8S itself.
Every time I want to record my TR8S into Ableton, I review this tutorial first. Hopefully one day I will have it committed to memory. Routing to avoid the double sounds is the part I always seem to forget. Thanks!!!!!
I would recommend you to automate that process somehow..
very helpful. Excellent. I can use all given information it for my new TR-6s as well.
Hi Brian, great recording tutorial. Going to try this out for my next acid session :-)
Thanks ! This is going to save me a lot of time. Tr8s arrived this week!
Glad I could help! Be sure to subscribe, i have a lot more coming!
Plus: If I connect Assign out 1/2 to my audio interface I can, as you say in your video, remove double sound, but you can also set monitor IN in a new track feeded by channel stereo 1/2 of Roland and record separate channel with monitor OFF. In this way you can hear what you are recording without adding delay on channel 3-13.
I couldn’t find out how to switch off the midi outs from the Tr8S . Appreciated your help and advice . Regard s
Very helpful. Thanks man
Thanks, man! great job!
nice work! thanks!
Great tutorials you have here, very useful! I'm going to watch them all.
Small question, where did you get those coloured TR knobs?
Thank you for watching them and for your support! I was lucky enough to get the knobs from Roland. For a while, they were handing them out at expos and conventions.
Thank you for this 👍🏻😉😁
You’re a champ dude
thanks for this.
THANKS ALOT!
These videos have been great in helping me set up my TR8S, thank you!
I have my unit connected to my interface via midi cable rather than USB midi like I can see here. Is USB midi better or are cables fine? The only difference I can see is my ableton does not recognise the TR8s as a device. I plan to get some more hardware so purchased a midi cables for chaining these but now thinking I will use the USB. Thanks!
really helpful
Great video ! It worked perfectly for me thanks !
I'm using the TR-8S to Ableton via the USB cable, so it's also used as a soundcard (I guess ?)
So I'm listening to Ableton with my Headphones from the Phones output of the TR-8S, but I'm not able to listen to my other Ableton clips at the same time, I was asking myself how to do it, and if not possible, how do you do it yourself ?
Thanks a lot for all your great videos it helped me a lot !
You should assign input and output as the tr8s in abelton
I
Cant fix the latency 😢
@@jorgevasconcelosmadetomove With Ableton Delay you can shift it to be on time !
i cant man , the best way and mor professional is with MIDI dyn cable, usb midi sucks
Love your videos, very in depth. Do you offer private lessons ?
I would that. Thanks for your lessons.
I do offer private lessons! Email me through djunit-e.com. Don't book a lesson there though, the schedule needs changing.
Thank you for the kind words! Yes, I do offer private zoom sessions. Reach me through the email link at djunit-e.com.
Hello Unit:E the way i have my preferences in ableton is I could only choose the drive, which would be ASIO in my case, and the audio device, not split in to input and output devices.
So i can do all this routing but the audio device would be the TR8S in order for me to set the Ext In for each channel, were it's normally set to 'Focusrite USB AUDIO'm so at the end I cant hear any signal i only see it coming through in the channels..
Even if i have the usb audio set to INDiv in my TR8S..
I hope I explained this is in a clear way and any help would be much appreciated now, thanks :)
*TR8S plugged in with USB cable to the PC, audio plugged into one of my soundcard's inputs running through the MIX OUT L/MONO on my TR8S
Great video
I was wondering if it was possible to link the tr8s through an mx1 running on ableton 11. Load a drum rack and kit and use the tr8s to manipulate the samples. Such as load up the thicket kit and lower the tubing of the bass and snare drum using the tuning knobs on the tr8s. Or use the auto fill buttons?
Thanks guys I'm a complete noob haha
Thanks. I watched this hoping it will give me clues on how to connect the mc-707. I am getting the doubling of sound with that. Your vid should help me. 👍😎
Nope, no good. It appears I could get rid of the doubling but lost the ability of the Drum Track from sending to the inbuilt Reverb/Delay MFX 😔
@@holotropik that's because when you record the TR-8S tracks directly from USB the TR-8S effects are bypassed.
@@Claidheambmor Why is that?
i find many mixers and the like tend to record only dry signals?
@@paulgregory1029 usually when you are recording something on a per channel basis, it is with the intention of adding effects and processing to the dry signal later. So it follows then that you want as dry a signal as possible when doing per channel recording (multitracking). Recording the stereo mix out instead of individual channels will of course get you the full effected and processed signal from the device itself.
I discovered something: when you set TR-8S as audio input and output on your DAW it works as audio interface for all tracks present in DAW. So if I connect MIX output 1/2 of TR-8S to my line 3/4 of my audio interface I can hear everything is playing in my DAW from Monitors connected to my audio interface.
This is what I needed
Hey, thank you! Helped me a lot! But I have some question then... If I use tr-8s as my output audio device, how I would be able to listen the signal from my monitors that are connected with my interface? Best regards
Send the TR-8S output to the interface input?
Great tutorial, just wondering is anyone else having problems with MIDI drift after syncing to the grid in ableton.
Thanks for the excellent video, I'm having a problem I hope someone here can answer. I have the TR8S hooked up to ableton, I want ableton to start/stop the TR8S sequencer in time to my other external gear.
To be clear, I don't want ableton to sequence the TR8S, I just want the sequencer to start and stop when I press a midi clip in live.
Is there some setting for this?
In this case you should use Ableton as your main clock source. Hook up your TR-8S and other gear with MIDI cables- you can attach them separately or chained together, then you should be able to hit space bar or launch a MIDI clip in Ableton and all of your gear will follow the transport in Ableton.
Super helpful video. I'm wondering, since the TR-8S doesn't have a song mode and is much more geared toward performance, how are you all getting your arrangements into the DAW will fills and stuff? Just hitting record and pressing everything on time? I'm OK with that but am curious if there are other ways. Cheers!
I just record a couple channels at a time and do the arrangement afterwards. I don't feel confident in just performing the entire thing and doing one take.
@@UnitE808 Totally. I mean, I could map it out in Ableton with markers, when to hit what, and it wouldn't be that difficult- at least to get a rough sketch of the performance to then edit in the DAW, but I think maybe a hybrid of of performance and recording a few tracks at a time might be the best workflow. Thanks!
Doesn´t it send any midi cc for the scatter effect ?(wich i think you mean by fills)
@@Iredidv it might! I don’t know to be honest but that wouldn’t surprise me.
best videos ever!!
Hey E,love your channel and information,it’s invaluable!!!!
Have a question, when I’m running my tr8s through Ableton,I sometimes get a crackling sound after a short while,I run an 8gb ram M1 chip Apple Mac, I don’t see the cpu detector spiking…
Could the latency be the problem, too much coming in and it not being able to keep up, it crackles and drops out a bit….any ideas from you or anyone that might see this post, thanks guys…
I find that having multiple vsts open or running can cause audio glitches to incoming signals. Sometimes flattening tracks can help. It’s really hard to pinpoint the issue without knowing more about what’s going on. I hope someone else can chime in with more knowledge.
Still working this out (looks awesome!) but after following the vid closely about 3 times I found I had to set 'USB Audio' under General on the 8S to 'Individual', it was set to assign. Might've been careless menu diving by me, or a new setting or I might be completely wrong. But now I have individual instruments > channels in Ableton. \o/ (latest firmware)
Currently have no ableton fx tho, need to get my head around my routing :) awesome vids!
Yes!
Finally got it all working tonight, 8S and Ableton both happily clocked off Traktor - bags of fun :) thanks!!
@@triffski great to hear! Have fun!
Hey man, how did you get it working with Ableton effects?
@@ComradeGrumby I can't remember now and all my kit is set up very differently, it was one small step I missed out whilst setting up the audio routing in Ableton
Is it possible to sync master clock/tempo from cubase to tr8s using only USB cable? I ran out of outputs on my midi splitter unfortunatelly :/
Yes. Set the tempo sync on in the TR-8S utility menu
Thanks for this. Unfortunately my setting is not working perfect like it to be. I don´t get the zero point (on the one).
Try removing clip fade.
Nice
Thank you so much for this!!! Do you happen to know if there is a way to control a keyboard Synth with TR 8s? My Nord Lead 2 has nice percussion preset sounds. Trying to figure out if I can have Tr 8s control the Nord. Any help much appreciated, as always. Thank you!!!
The only sensible way of controlling any external synth with the 8S is using the trigger out to advance the sequencer of that external synth. If the synth does not have a sequencer, the 8S isn’t very useful in programming synth melodies.
@@UnitE808 Thank you. Stayed up last night and figured it out. It's in the utility. 8s can assign a Midi note to each instrument. Agree, it doesn't makes sense, unless (which ns my case) your synth has really cool drum patches (Nord Lead 2, 2x, Rack etc). If anyone is interested I can post a more detailed instructions. Thank you!
Thanks for the video - i know that you can record audio from the TR8S to DAW (im using ableton) and in the past i have also recorded Midi data from the TR8S in ableton as well. But is there anyway you can send midi data from the DAW (ableton) to the TR8S? If so how do you get it to work.
Working on a video for that.
hey are those chroma caps? If so did you use the TR8 MK1 ones from DJTT since they don't have an option for TR8s?
Hi! No, they are not chroma caps. These were from Roland. Reps were handing them out at shows and expos. Hopefully, they will sell them soon.
Great video I have the tr8 not s but been having this issue I got told your effects run through 1/2 or are the effect on the master how would I record the effects with out it doubling up?
Set the output of your DAW to something other than the 1/2 mix out
ey man, how you change de colors of buttons and the pad to this blue? by default its green
Nice L shape cables :)
Hi, wondering if you can help me out
I have this problem in ableton where when i want to record an external synth by playing in notes on a keyboard, the tr8s which is in the session and has a drum pattern playing somehow triggers the synth with all of the notes it has in its patterns, i.e the tr8s drum patterns triggers the same pattern in the synth, making recording with external hardware impossible without writing in midi. Any idea how to fix this?
Sounds like the synth and the TR-8S are using the same midi channel. You can change the midi channels in the utility menu. Also, you might want to turn off edit note while you're in the midi section.
Hi
My current set up is macbook with Ableton push 2, Moog Mother and a UAD Apollo twin for live. I'm planning on getting a TR8S, which I want to incorporate into my liveset while processing the sound from the TR8S in Ableton. Is there a way for me to do it without having to buy any extra gear.
Thanks
Nope. Just run the mix out of the TR-8S into the apollo
thanks
This assumes the TR8S is the only audio device connected to the PC. What if I am using an interface, like the Traktor A10 to connect multiple devices through audio, with each connected to the PC via USB for midi control? In Preferences I select the Traktor A10 as my Audio Input device. In that case the TR-8S is a single stereo input. Is it still possible to map each audio input the way you are showing here, with one channel per TR-8S instrument?
This is possible on a Mac, not Windows. The Midi/Audio settings for your Mac will allow you to set up multiple interfaces.
If you would start recording not on the beginning but a bar later i bet you wonnt have that latency on the first note. Too bad it doesn´t support ableton link, it doesn´t have wifi or ethernet by my knowledge, maybe ableton link over usb is a (future) possibility? Also wonder if midi clock is stable with other hardware (i would like to get a tr8s for drums together with my maschine plus that would do looping, slicing, instruments etc...Just offload some cpu to the roland and have some more control for live performance is the goal.)
does this method record the x ej. i assing my master fx to a lpf/hpf filter adn the i move it during the recording? in other owrdds i thought chanel 1/2 are the stereo
thank you so much for the video!
If you record the mix out of the TR-8S, you will get the reverb and delay and master fx from the TR-8S. It will not record the fx on the individual instrument channel.
Unit:E thank you, that’s what I thought!
good evening!
Is there any sites for free sample downloads for use with my newly acquired TR8s that you'd recommend? everything I've come across is subscription based.....
There are many gigabytes of free samples all over the internet, hopefully you have found some now. :)
Hi there, can someone help me how to sync tr8s with sp404a. Have midi cable, it was easy with tr8, but how about tr8s i want to play some longer samples and loops from sp404a
Midi out of the TR-8S into the SP-404A. Audio out of the SP-404A into the ext in of the TR-8S.
can Ableton work with both a TR-8S and other audio interface? I have synthesizers connected to the audio interface Focusrite and I want to connect the TR-8S via usb to record each channel separately..
If you have a Mac, yes.
Hey there, with this same setup I get no sound out from my laptop to the monitors (directly connected) Am I missing a step here?
Appreciate your help!
You have to set up your audio output differently. I am using the TR-8S as my audio output.
I had the same issue. I realized that I could just monitor the TR-8S with headphones and record in. Then switch back to my regular sound card and use my monitors. Sort of a pain but not a deal breaker by any means.
*after further testing I realized the TR-8S acts as a fully fledged soundcard so all of my computer sounds including Ableton will come through the headphones. I did have to temporarily mute the 1&2 master output in Ableton to stop the signal from doubling up.
can you do an FL studio tutorial on this ?
Excuse me...another question. If I set as audio output the output of roland tr-8s I can't hear any sound because my monitor are connected to my audio interface. Why do you set the roland as your audio output device? How can you hear the audio if you don't set on Ableton the output of your monitor? Thanks in advice for your answer. Claudio
I've understood...I had to try to get it! But I ask you...if I decide to record just the mix out to have reverb, delay and Master FX available on my record what do you suggest? Record via USB or record via audio output? What about audio quality? Thanks
@Claudio Sica if the interface you are running the mix out to is of higher quality than the 8S interface, then use the audio mix out.
Isn’t there a setting on the old tr-8 that undid this problem of latency in the system settings? Hold ptn select and hit 7 ?
I dont know, but that option is not in the 8S
Why do i have latency, is there any way to get rid of it ?? i press spacebar and play on my mac but tr8s plays a bit delayed all the time any way to fix it ??
Did you figure it out? I’m been trying to fix this for a week straight
i've only got garageband! but every time create a new track, how do you get rid of the instrument preset in garage band? every time i play the tr8s into garageband the rhythm is recorded, but its not TR8S sounds its the garageband instrument, so bloody frustrating ! is garageband not compatible?
GarageBand is compatible. What's happening is that the midi from the 8S is triggering GB instruments. You need to set up audio tracks in GarageBand. I can try to make a video on this.
Sweet that would be good. I half worked it out, managed to get one audio track up! And improvise an idea
Hi, It works but I can't hear Reverb or Delay and Pan on individual tracks doesn't work. Any solutions?
Thanks for video.
Reverb and delay are only output through the mix out. This is common in multi-track recording. Panning is the same. You are just sending a mono signal.
@@UnitE808 Thanks a lot
Might the doubling sound have something to do with having both USBTHRU and SOFTTHRU on..?
No. The doubling is created by the TR-8S sending audio out the mix out and out the USB to Ableton and then Ableton sending it out the same mix out. With the bit of latency from going to Ableton and back, it creates a doubled sound. This was tested and proven.
@@UnitE808 I'm just getting it goin rite now in Ableton for the first time..... I've never even used my Ableton yet. I wish I hadn't registered it when I did....--would've qualified for the free version 10 upgrade had I waited 3 more months b4 registering my serial#... Thanks so much bro

Can this be done if the tr8s is connected with USB?
That is my preferred method. Hold shift on the TR-8S when plugging the USB into the computer
hello when i do this configuration why can I not get the reverb from the TR8s to show up on my track?
Reverb and delay are sent to the mix out only. It is very common for multi-track recording to send a dry signal for further processing in a DAW. If you sent it to Ableton with the reverb, it might sound different and there is no way to remove it. If you need record, make a bus in Ableton and send the track to it.
@@UnitE808 ok I have the individual tracks running through usb and am getting reverb through plugins. Is there a way to use this setup but get the reverb through my pedals instead? Thanks
Why do you keep off monitoring just for the kick and on for the rest ? Thz
I kept it off for the sake of overpowering the recording. If you don’t need to hear the input to be recorded, That is totally fine. It’s simply audio monitoring of the channels. If not needed, not an issue.
is this possible when i connect my tr8s to my mx-1 ??
I dont think you get all the tr8s channels. I'll check tonight
Hi ! thanks for the video! I did all these ! recorder my set but after that I could not listen to the audio that is been recorded..any thoughts?

@@nochinz8812 that is strange. Do you have other channels besides the TR-8S in the Ableton project? Do they make sound? It would seem that any audio recorded into ableton should play through the master out.

It all comes through 3/4 to your monitors

Input:
TR-8S CTL
Output:
MULTI A (TR-8S)
MULTI B (TR-8S)
MULTI C (TR-8S)
I am not sure where you are seeing these settings, is it in Ableton? It seems you may have the TR-8S usb audio setting on asgn instead of indiv. To change this, go into the utility menu and look for USB Audio parameter.
Hi thanks for the swift reply,
The first : TR-8S CTL
Is in Ableton midi settings (As in your video, shows two items ie. TR-8S AND TR-8S CTL)
The others :

MULTI B (TR-8S)
MULTI C (TR-8S)
@@paulgregory1029 the multi outputs are output 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8 for audio outputs in your DAW using the TR-8S as the audio interface and the assign outs on the back. This way, you are not sending ableton out the mix out of the TR-8S and having that phasing of 2 signals.

hi Unit:E, everything works here, but the sound is extremely quiet, any guess???
Adjust the kit gain. The individual tracks in Ableton are going to be around -12 dB. That is standard for recording to allow headroom for fx and processing.
Unit:E it's a big difference to a normal kick sample on ableton. Thanks for your help.
@@cesarvalentim9796 those are mastered samples pumped up to be as loud as possible, no headroom on those. This is all part of gain staging and production with hardware
Put a limiter on the tracks and that will bring them up.
Unit:E thanks again, you are the best
Brian the doubling is caused by a windows setting. turn the monitoring off in windows sound setting on audio input tab for tr8s/mx-1 etc . use ableton to monitor or you main soundcard
I see what you're saying, but that is not why the sound is doubled. The TR-8S needs to be used as the sound card if you want to run all the instruments on individual channels. If you use any other sound card, you lose that ability. That doubling is coming from the TR8S playing sounds out the master out and ableton playing out the same. It's really only an issue when recording the channels. Playback in ableton doesnt need the TR-8S to play.
It doesn't work, i follow every step. i get signal on my external mixer and in my daw butt no sound. Btw great video's .
I got the same, no idea if it'll help you or if what I've done is correct, but I got past that step (see my comment above)
Now same with cubase please
I don't have Cubase. If I can find someone nearby that has it, I can try.
Effects not being transferable via usb is a bit of a letdown. You get everything sounding good transfer individual sounds via usb and your effects are gone.
If you select channel 1and 2 as the input on a channel in ableton, you will record the master out. Turn down all other channels on the tr8s except for the instrument you want to record, and record the master out. You should get the fx. Also, you can add fx in ableton. There are more to choose from.
Sounds like a long winded way to do it.
It should be transferable on all individual channels via usb otherwise wants the point of the effects if they only come through the master outs
@@gamblesgroove111 which effects are you referring to? The delay and Reverb and master effects do not run through the individual instrument channels. The hardware is just not designed that way. The instruments are sent out their Channel through those effects to the master out. If you're going to record simply the instrument Channel, you will not be able to record anything that comes after that channel without going through the master out and recording that. It's not a long-winded way. You just have to have the master out being recorded.
Basically then there is no point creating a pattern with all the internal effects unless you are just sending it out the mixout. If you want to use separate channels via usb you might aswell turn all the effects off. Bit silly surely
The TR-8S is a performance piece of Hardware designed to use in a live situation. Using it for anything other than that will take a little more work on the user's end. If the user wants to record into Ableton, then they should use the effects in Ableton. The effects on the TR-8S are meant for performance.
Man, people assume too much of noobs. Supposed to create 11 channels--but how the hell is one supposed to do that? LOL!
Watch the other video I made explaining how to do that!
