How was it that we won all league matches and qualified for the semifinal but lost the league match against a weak team Bangladesh? And how the Bengalis celebrated coz that is when they got their test status which was to be given if they defeated one major team in that tournament. It was like independence once again for them and they denounced Pak in their jubilation not knowing the victory was handed to them in a plate by some traitors in our team. We could have won another world cup after 7 years but I think for these money minded ppl honor takes a backseat and all that matters is money, money.and money.
We probably weren't very keen on winning as well- not just the 99 world cup but the one after that too. Had we won either of the two cups, cricket would have taken off with major corporate sponsorships and much better facilities for cricketers. The players who bet on matches in those days ruined two generations of cricketers who came after them. We are still trying to heal from those grievous wounds.
True! The main architect of the betting syndicate was Wasim Akram who accumulated millions of dollars, Wasim Akram's test records are worse than Sri Lankan Leggie Rangana Herath who has won more matches for his country with dignity and honour.

@MrFalcon2001 at that time, match fixing was so prominent that it infested nearly all teams especially India, Pakistan and South Africa. Fixing was a bit less for Indian international players but it continued with Pakistani players unfortunately.

I remember Pak ex-Captain and coach Mushtaq Muhammed (he was coach in WC too I think or just there with team), he once said (after the WC was over) that 'when I heard Wasim won the toss, I was over the moon and felt we will now def win. Then I heard the commentator saying 'Akram decided to bat first', my heart just sank, I knew we threw it away' (something along those lines). To the day till I die, I know it in my heart, there was something fishy about Wasim's decision to bat first!

Pakistan just continued to surprise everyone during 1999 world cup match after match. Even against India, I was surprised to see the way Pakistan played and lost. It could have been an easy win had they not played adventurous cricket. I was happy for India though. Wasim Akram`s stubborness and one-dimensional strategy really costed Pakistan very pathetically.After listening to all the anecdotes from Aamir Sohail I think that he must`ve been appointed as the new skipper particularly for the World Cup event.Obviously the top-ranked sides of the world like England and Australia produced introduced numerous batting all-rounders including the likes of MCGrath,Gillispie,Shane Warne and etc and that`s where we still lack in.It is a powerful lesson for us ahead of the next World Cup editions.

Warne might be close enough to qualify as a bowling all rounder (not batting) at best (and a slight case can be made for Gillispie, not a good one though)...while MCGrath was as much of all rounder (Batting or Bowling both) as was Kapil Dev a 'Phaast Bowler' :-)

1. Winning toss and batting first when even layman knew this was not a batting track
2. Shahid Afridi no techenique at all, played instead of great and legend Yousaf

Few statistical errors. In 1975, West Indies had only one young Andy Roberts in wings as a fast bowling threat. The rest - Boyce, Julien, Holder were between military to medium pacers.Lloyd himself filled in the role of 5th bowler with his own brand of slow mediums. In 1979, it was the fearsome foursome of Roberts, Holding, Croft and Garner, unleashed for the first time on the international scene and they were good enough to run through any side. Viv Richards (as a bowler) and Collis King the batting allrounder were the fill-ins but not match-winners by any standard and not really needed. In 1983, India's bowling combination of Kapil-Binny-Madan Lal-Amarnath- Sandhu would struggle to get 10 wickets on any other surface anywhere in the world but it was perfectly balanced and effective for English wickets in English weather of June-July. Srikkanth by the way, was a dashing opener and was never considered as a bowling option and neither was Yashpal. In 1992, Pakistan too had a well-balanced attack with Aquib Javed, Imran Khan (even at a reduced pace) Mushtaque Ahmed and Wasim Akram - who on his day could single-handedly win a match in one single spell.
The subsequent tournaments have also proved time and again that while having batting allrounders may do the job of fill-ins , to actually win a match or even a tournament the team must have genuine wicket-taking bowlers. The WC 1999, the subject of Mr. Sohail's video, was won not by the Damien Martins or Michael Bevans or Darren Lehmans but the outstanding bowling combination of McGrath, Fleming and Warne. Mr. Sohail himself, with all due respect, was a fill-in bowler and not a genuine wicket-taking threat and neither was Ejaz Ahmed or Salim Malik. The scorecards will attest, if anything else.
To any neutral observer, the decision to bat first on a moist wicket against a very potent attack was a major error in hindsight. In Akram's defence, Pakistan's batting was never too consistent throughout the tournament and in two group matches they batted second (against India and Bangladesh), they failed to chase down modest scores of 220 plus. Pakistan's strength historically had always been its bowling attack and in 1999 they had a good combination in Akram, Razzak, Saqlain and the tearaway Shoaib Akhtar. All they needed was for the batsmen to pile up a score in the region of 250s-260s. Unfortunately they came up against an Australian team that had peaked at the right time, firing all cylinders and once Wasti was taken brilliantly by Waugh in the 5th over, disaster was virtually written on the wall.

The same "mistake" was repeated by Waqar Younis two years later on the very same stadium when he decided to bat first in Natwest Series Final. I am still confused that how can experienced players like these two commit such stupidity, despite being well aware of the conditions. It seems like they both were under some kind of magic spell or were hypnotised at the toss.

pak middle order was a horror show through out the wcup. Playing afridi on that pitch was horrible decision. Difference between the 2 teams was the middle order. Though when both these teams met later tha year the pak team was again thrashed in tests and odis.

Aamir Bhai- You are spot on with toss but there are other things which are debatable.Pakistan won in India and Sharjah with same combination and most pundits would agree to go with winning combination, even though English conditions were different.I know you have great chemistry with Ian chapel and before world cup he kept on saying on commentary that Pakistan will be difficult to beat with this combination.Other than yourself they took every one to England so it's difficult to see who missed out from that tour.Mohammad Yousaf didn't played semi final as well due to groin injury. Only Almighty would know the real reason but it's difficult to understand why would one drop in form middle order player in semi final or final if he was fit.And if he was fit than, why board didn't intervene.All players are close friends with journalists, why didn't he talked about it.Saleem Malik was hopelessly out of form and he was even struggling to cope with 110 km pace of Benagladeshi bowlers.Srilanka made 4 changes for 2011 semi final as well on same grounds that they wanted to take risk with fresher players instead of playing reputation.The 1999 team from that game used to give a different version than but now on their youtube channels, all are telling opposite stories.So were they correct than or now? Australia was a better team and they beat Pakistan again hands down couple of years in Lords in pretty similar fashion in tri series final.Saeed Anwar,Imran nazir, saleem elahi, younis khan, Inzamam, Mohammad Yousaf, Razak , Rashid all compiled a score of 151 under sun that day. And for assumption lets throw in that we had a more honest captain as well in form of waqar, even than we were bulldozed by same Australians.You were a great player and even better reader of the game.But dont you think like other aspects, as a nation we donot learn from our mistakes and look for scapegoats.Having said this our past cricketers should also take responsibility for teaching their fans about reality of the game.You are an exception and may allah bless you for being honest with the country but rest of the players also need to come up with black and white facts rather than cooking up stories from past.Thank You!

1999 world cup final was a disaster!...it took months for every pakistani to recover from this setback!....we had the best team ever and look what we did
However, even today when I think about it I find it shocking that two great players aamir sohail and waqar younis didnt play this world cup???!!..waqar was an absolute ripper in English conditions and aamir had scored a double hundred in england on the last tour....

I don't agree with the point of using Ijaz Ahmed as a bowler in 99 WC. Pakistan had the luxury of not 1 but 2 wicket taking all-rounders in Abdul Razzaq and Azhar Mahmood in that WC and thus Ijaz was not at all needed as a bowler.
To the point of bowling first in the final.....its easier to say now in the hindsight. But the fact that in that WC, Pakistan won 5 of their 6 victories batting first and they were struggling to chase anything beyond 220 (Lost to both India and Bangladesh chasing 230 odd). Pakistan was choking in chases and this fact probably made Wasim chose to bat first. Most of the commentators before the start of the match actually praised Wasim's decision including the Great Jeoffrey Boycott.

Amir Bhai you haven't explained that why you were not selected in the worldcup squad. Also Pakistan treated Waqar Younis very harshly throughout the worldcup. Shahid Afridi was given regular chances whereas Mushtaq Ahmed wasn't given any chance. Wasim Akram relayed too much on youngsters i.e. Azhar Mehmood, Shahid Afridi, Razzaq, Wasti whereas experienced players like Waqar Younis, Mushtaq Ahmed, Saleem Malik, captain haven't utilized from their experience & skills.

I would have agreed if he played that match and badly performed and lost..how can player lose a match by not playing in that match.. what all other 11 Pakistani players were doing on the pitch in that match..above all after getting quite a good start in Pakistan in in what you did to Prasad and got out..why you don't consider yourself equal or may be more responsible for that loss... because only your that mistake changed the perspective of the match...

Imran obviously never wanted Pak to win another wcup, as it was good for his political career as he would remain one of the biggest contributor to Pakistan after winning 92 cup. What is your take on that and how true was that? Infact imran has already honored wasim with the best bowler or whatever title.

But this idiot wasim has broken the hearts of many millions of Pakistani supporters. He deserved to be hanged which would had also served as a lesson for the future corrupt players.
One reason in my opinion waseem akram was selecting his close friends and drop person like waqar younas , mushtaq and yousaf who were not in his close circle. As a result team combination effected badly
