I'm with you on this game. Things went so badly the 3 first times I played it, that I restarted again and again. . . until the fourth time, and I found a system that just worked. . . and it was still a struggle without equal.

There once was a... explorer that stayed at a bunjer in the antartica for a few months, last name was byrd, one time his door got stuck half way open in the middle of a snow storm, that probably half a minute was enough to break one of the fans from the heat system and started slowing poisoning hin while he was waiting for his rescue.
I just remembered one of his quotes "Relax once in the cold and all those artificial barriers you painstakingly set up will mercilessly crumble"

Yeah Frostpunk was a whole different kind of game from most city builders. My run through turned into a authoritarian dystopia, but I never had to use child workers or cannibalism so I counted it as a win.
And that soundtrack, especially when the final storm kicks in is amazing.

Remember: It's only a dystopia if the people are unhappy 👌
Authoritarian, sure - but as long as nobody's complaining, everything's a-ok. Pay no attention to the secret police or the "disappearing" people.

    • @TheAngryXenite

@@Red-fi1tyIt only becomes a policy after an event chain. Basically, you need to have a food shortage long enough for a decent amount of people to die. Eventually, you'll start dealing with a cannibal gang, the people will raid their hideout (with your guards unsure if it was to punish them or simply to seize their supply of long pork for themselves), and you'll have a choice on whether to harvest the mass graves for food andmix the meat of the dead into the rations as they fall or not. After a while, people will start independently cooking with human meat.

Frostpunk is in a way similar to subnoutica. It's just as much a game as it is an experience. You can reply it sure. You still will have fun. But nothing will ever come close to the first blind playthrough you did. Simply the fact you already know what's coming changes how you view it on the fundamental level, and while the game is still fun, the magic that created the memories you will have with it is gone, by the mere fact of knowing about i. kind of like the joy of the first kiss.

The thing with Frostpunk is that it's more than a city builder, it's a new genre: society survival.
You not only have to build, you have to keep your citizens alive and their needs and wants met in an unforgiving world that will kill you before you know it.
The game pushes you to the limit for the sake of survival, and makes you question if it was worth it if you threw your morals to achieve it.

-25 Fahrenheit is -31 in Celsius for anyone that was curious. I think that is about what I, as a Swede living in the mid-north of my country, has experienced too. I think the worst I've ever experienced was about -34.

Endless mode is terrifying because you have a storm. Then you need to pick up the pieces and prep for the next one. And the next one. And the next one. And on and on until you get unlucky, and your city dies, or you have a heart attack from the stress. Love it 10/10.

I remember I actually managed to earn the achievement for saving everyone in the frostland and having no deaths from sickness, cold, or hunger on my first run. I find that the fallacy of "too many mouths to feed" will just get you killed. The labor people can provide will always be more valuable than the food they consume and children can be one of the best and easiest way to maintain high hope if you choose the correct laws. The worst thing that happened was we accidentally drove a man to suicide with mildly excessive propaganda, and at the end the game considered me to have not taken things too far.

Not to take away from the glory of this game, but I wondered if it would was accurate to show snow in a post-frozen world game. For there to be rain/snow enough water would have to evaporate and reach the upper atmosphere to cool, condense, and drop again. If the earth's surface is constantly at freezing then I don't see how enough moisture could reach the stratosphere to produce rain/snow.
My random though for the day. Awesome game! Awesome review Old Man!

The snow in the far North and South rarely falls, but the driving wind in blizzards and storms drives the snow sitting on the surface in flurries like sandstorms in the desert.

Coldest temperature I've ever experienced was -40C. Any little bit of your body that's not covered up will hurt like hell at that temperature. Now imagine the -150C that your city had to go through in this game. I'd imagine that no matter what you do, no matter how thick your jacket, it will hurt to even exist. In fact I'm pretty at that temperature *_the air itself would fucking freeze_* so unless you covered your mouth with something to heat it back up in front of your mouth, your lungs would collapse and you would die.

    • @magni5648
      @magni5648 8 місяців тому

Tbf, the temperature gauge in game includes wind chill and is taken above the crater rim, not down inside. You're still looking at world record low temperatures, just not the air outright freezing. In fact, during the storm you see these weird little streams of light falling down into the crater. That's frozen carbon dioxide meeting the warmth of the generator and rapidly vapourizing again.

If I remember correctly, there are two mobile games (both developed by Century Games) that's essentially the watered down versions of Frostpunk, Frozen City and Whiteout Survival.
Frozen City is much closer to Frostpunk than the latter, since it has the city builder aspect (although very simple) with the resource and employee management. The events are almost like DLCs, with one of them being a very simplified version of Frostpunk's DLC, The Last Autumn.
Is it bone-crushingly hard like Frostpunk? Only when you get far enough....like I did. The food is the most annoying part, where I have to still upgrade shit and my survivors keep getting sick, starving, or dead (though a little more lenient on the death part). Oh yeah, the level requirements....WHY ARE THEY SO FUCKING HIGH?! I seriously can't keep up and I refuse to gacha more units because even they can't keep up.
Still more manageable than Frostpunk though. It took me 7 games to finally get me a decently-running city....with starvation to watch out for.

This game is deceptively complex. Just putting down a resource building isn't automatically a fix to your problems.
One thing I find hilarious is, Bricky's simplifying of the Purpose trees lends the idea of a slippery slope of being absolutely inevitable, that you MUST pick the next step in a gradual descent to being either a mad cult leader or like a particularly short-sighted general.
When in truth, if you command this operation with competence you will find no reason to cross the line. This game is funny for listing every point of horrible morality action at the end... but unless you actively set out in higher difficulty, it's not at all tough to attain the Golden Path achievement.
Order brings what is labelled as guard stations and prisons and propaganda... which could be seen as just police and newspapers in our present day.
There's an event-chain where somehow people muster the energy to graffiti walls, and even when people are most up in arms about it, you still have the option to say *It is the right of all people to speak their mind.*
Faith brings churches, soup kitchens, shrines and faith keepers... and doesn't say you have to get people self-flagellating or snitching on others. With that same event chain, you are able to say *Have faith - words will do you no harm!*
Imagine crowds of happily resting workers cheering on the automatons that took the place of entire crews doing back-breaking labour in the cold. Imagine warehouse floor managers being furious at crew chiefs who worry so little about whether or not they'll make it, they accidentally get ten times as much as they needed to fill the floor space left.
Imagine your generator never leaving the highest setting and the broadest range on account of how much coal a competently set-up mining operation keeps flooding its intake with. Imagine classes of apprentices happily learning from engineers that take as much time off as they want, for they've utterly exhausted every possible avenue of research. Imagine your people feasting on the full range of nutrients again because you refused meat or vegetable only diets, thus making their resistance to sickness that much hardier. Imagine the Londoners choosing they will all stay, and being able to say with surety that your city is united again.
On the non-campaign Endless mode, it's also possible to decide you will celebrate Christmas for the little ones, and with enough skill after that point, imagine not just surviving, but prospering through what you determine you will endure.
The true path to goodness, like being a true man, first requires you to be true. To not just respond to developing issues, but prepare in advance to make them not ever take off. And to never have only one option.
You are the Captain. The people will follow. The choice is *yours.*

  • @Bondrewd__21
    @Bondrewd__21 Рік тому

Okay, one more comment. So, I think that humans maybe a little fkd up, sorry for curse word, so, when I see game where we actually see the price of survival, the actual cost of human live, when even if you try to see humans to the end you anyway see just a work power, when you try to make gentle decisions and see how it end up with your failures… you just giving up and go heartless mode. For me? All this laws I see as pretty chill(even if it’s something like freaking execution law) some of them is funny for me, but it’s always get the feeling like I loosing something when I make decision, and it’s actually hurts. World of FrostPunk is one of the Cruelest worlds to live, and even choice between live and death make you ask yourself, did it really worth it? Did I really wanted to be that kind of a person? And you know that you never actually wanted, but you must to continue.
