He missed them out because virtually all of the aforementioned films are not cyberpunk, aside from The Zero theorem. A scanner darkly is a animated science fiction thriller, it’s supposed to be set in the near future but it’s literally just our Modern times, it has some technology into it but that just falls within the science fiction genre. Damn good science fiction films though and a good list for anyone interested, highly recommend every film on the list, but they are just not cyberpunk.
A movie a lot of people dont know about is Cypher (2002). It has a quite unique style, almost tech noir, but incredibly atmospheric. Good list. I'd also add Nemesis, Death Machine, Repo Men and Split Second (not as much cyberpunk but definitely worth a look for the "low life" aspect).
Couple of things. Johnny Nmemonic is a William Gibson story. Also, find New Rose Hotel. It's another. Cronenberg would be best represented by videodrome. Not sure the 5th Element is cyberpunk? Too clean and optimistic.
I have a few more recommendations. First, Terry Gilliam also did BRAZIL, a bizarre mish-mash of advanced tech, societal satire and comedic noir films. Second, the remake of TOTAL RECALL with Colin Ferrell might be a better choice than Arnie's version. Third, would the early Angelina Jolie film, HACKERS, count as cyberpunk? It does focus on how low-level street crime mixes with technology, even if it's not advanced tech... or any good.

You dropped the word "noir" right near the end almost as an aside. I feel like that's almost the definition of cyberpunk. Sci-fi + film noir = cyberpunk. Thoughts?I
It's technically not part of the genre, but several of the best cyberpunk movies have a neo noir story. Because Blade Runner is so highly regarded, people have tried to recreate it. They co-exist in several flicks but aren't joined at the hip if that makes sense.
I do see your point. Let me revise. Sci-fi + noir = good cyberpunk. Sci-fi - noir = basically just Sci-fi. Example... you included Ghost in the Shell as cyberpunk. I thought of that movie as straight sci-fi with anime sensibilities.

I liked “Mute”, but it could have been sooooo much better with some polish. And I don’t believe I’ve ever seen Paul Rudd play a villain before! He’s so damn likable I never would have thought he pull off such a cold, chilling antagonist! I thought the live-action “Ghost in the Shell” looked AMAZING!!! And only SJW-crybabies had an issue with Scarlett Johansson playing the main character. Pretty much everyone they interviewed in Japan had no problem with it. And for an anime adaptation to get a big budget you need an A-List or Bankable star to play the lead. The issue I do have with the film, and what I have a problem with, is how they changed the story. Which I felt was for the worse and took a gorgeous film that could have been a classic and made it just okay.
Akira is a real classic of cyberpunk anime but i wouldn't call it that accessible it is quite confusioning and weird Also technically the fifth element is considered as a post-cyberpunk movie but a coool classic as well

Existenz probably isn't as frightening as Naked Lunch but it does have the body horror elements. It's more or less just "weird" in Existenz in my opinion whereas Naked Lunch is more "Nightmare Fuel".
I think people SHOULD see Blade Runner first - it's kind of a litmus test film and always has been. If you don't like it (or don't like Blade Runner 2049), I won't bother discussing film further with you, as you clearly have no taste and probably are the kind of person who likes sentimental, made for kids dreck like E.T. - a film which completely destroyed Blade Runner and The Thing (both masterpieces) at the box office in 1982 by the way. Both The Thing and Blade Runner were crapped on by critics that year, and audiences largely didn't see either one of them - yet E.T. triumphed both critically and box office-wise. That tells you pretty much everything you need to know about critics and the majority of the movie going public. Most people watching your channel are probably better than average. Dredd is a really good flick - yet another film recognized after the fact. Love Existenz - Cronenberg rules. So many of his body horror themed films are just awesome. I pull out Existenz every now and then because it is so damn cool. Strange Days is another film that rules - very underrated movie with a cool soundtrack that I often recommend to people. Dark City - frakin' awesome. It blew me away when I saw it in the theater when it was first released. So many people ignored this flick even after I told them to see it. There are other films that could be considered cyberpunk too, namely the Terminator films to a degree, several John Carpenter flicks (Escape From New York/L.A., Ghosts of Mars), and even District 9. Anyway - great list man. It makes me realize just how much I love cyberpunk flicks and just how many good ones there really are.
I get your point and would have agreed 100% a few years ago but I'd rather try to introduce people to new things and help them develop a taste for better films. I relate it to developing a flavor pallet. I love a good dark and heavy beer now but they used to taste like motor oil to me. Over time I worked my way up and I think people can do that with movies too. Plus, my logic is if they haven't seen Blade Runner by now their chances of loving it the first time are slim.
Point taken. Although I would still say that people of a certain age with many years of film watching under their belts should not have to be led to develop a taste for these films - they should have "left the nest" as it were and should have a sense of what is good and what is not at a certain point - otherwise they are probably rather hopeless in terms of developing an affinity for such things. Younger people on the other hand seem much more amenable to being introduced to new things. The only inherent problem with that, is that, because so many films have ripped off Blade Runner's aesthetic, visual style and other elements in the last 30 plus years, I think a lot of younger people will be underwhelmed by Blade Runner the first time they see it because they've seen so many newer films that copied it.
Mitchell Hodgemeyer Everything is not exclusive to “older” crowds. Let us young folks learn & enjoy. I love every movie on his list but my mom is a sci-fi junkie so I don’t count😂
Meh, it's a cult thing but not really a good movie. I could see it getting on a list with a different topic but never really considered it for this one.
Top 10 cyber punk movies ever 5th element Matrix Akira Hackers Ghost in the shell 1995 Blade runner Strange days Terminator Metropolis animated Children of men No particular order but If I would have to choose matrix is number 1. Cyber punk is simply just high tech low life any thing else added is just the flavour of it. It doesn't have to have neon lights or any certain type of technology going on. The creator uses the high low concept and creates their own art. But if I were to add what movie would be most culturally impactful or relatable it would be hackers or matrix purely based on the fact these types of people actually exist based on style and attitude and relatability to the true punk outlook on life. Blade runner to me isn't the best because the actor to me isn't someone I can look at and think they live a punk lifestyle. Unlike the alternative lgbt rave fashion that matrix uses. Which in today's culture is relevant unlike Blade runner. Even Akira I would put before Blade runner due to the actual style and attitude of the characters they embody punk and what it means to have the attitude. Punk to me is an attitude that influences style fashion and lifestyle. Then the cyber is obvious it's just anything technology. So the best cyber punk movie actually has real life punk personas mixed with cyber tech.
Johnny Mnemonic is my favourite. I love it so much I can forgive that it's kinda shitty. It's got such a wierd sense of humor and I think Keanu Reeves is perfect in it. Cool soundtrack. Udo Kier! Dolph Lundgren as a psychotic half-cyborg Jesus?! It's Jesus Time! Japanese cut recommended.
Blade runner was an ok movie, everyone hyped it up so much for me, that when I got around to seeing the movie, it was just ok. I did love the look of the film though, everything else just ok. Saw blade runner 2049 and went in with the expectation of it just turning out ok like the last one and I came out thinking it was a pretty good movie liked it more than the original, probably because my expectations where not so high like the last one.

+Todd McDanger Not only is that in the middle of the video, it’s in the thumbnail. How’d you miss it?
I was in a Walmart once. There was a Mother with like 6 kids. One kid was yelling repeatedly that he could not find his Batman toy. His Mom calmly told him to look with his eyes, not his mouth. I am now that kid. lol. Thanks for all these great vids!
😂
I was going to like this video but it 666 likes I don't want to rune that LoL 😁
A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having.
You don't need to like anime to like the original ghost in the shell. There is none of the things most people usual hate about anime.
Tetsuo and Japanese cyberpunk deserve so much better than they got here. My heart hurt during that part,
This dude said I never read books, dafuq
Yep, and if it's on the internet... that means it's 100% true.
the original ghost in the shell is soo good
I literally agreed with everything you said & I never agree😂 Another good 1 that’s pretty weird is Videodrome with James Woods. Absolutely changed my life
+TRoOF Da God I agree with Videodrome but it truly never occurred to me til after releasing this episode.
Flick Connection maybe it’s a good idea u didn’t tell everyone, u know those tumors are a doozy 😂
I just want a Cop with a Robot arm that lost his memories and his partner is a Hot cop whom his falls in love with and eventually she dies. Then he goes Rogue.
GATTACA!!!! ok it's more biopunk than cyberpunk but it derives from it. Highly recommendable.
Lawnmower man is a great movie too
was a bit disapointed as ive seen every one u mentioned till the end. Then Dark City hadnt seen that. So watched it. TBH good film i wouldnt call it cyber punk though more sci fi noir. But good film. Tnx
Dystopian. That's the word you're looking for.
"If you can't get Blade Runner, there are lighter cyberpunk movies..." What the hell, dude....
It is pretty heavy subject mater. Especially the 2nd one.
What about hackers or lawnmower man?
Akira is a real classic of cyberpunk anime but i wouldn't call it that accessible it is quite confusioning and weird
Also technically the fifth element is considered as a post-cyberpunk movie but a coool classic as well
Punk is good. I like punk rock as well
Dredd was a great movie
Don't make Blade Runner your first? I love the vid but no way. If anyone needs a primer before it they won't get cyberpunk anyway. My opinion. Great job btw.
*AKIRA (1988) & GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995)THE BEST*
Upgrade?
Cyberpunk2077 is on a delay hiatus waiting too download it
Already watched altered carbon it is okay
I always liked Strange Days, not sure how well it holds up today though
It gets a little long winded during the New Years countdown if you ask me but the concept and delivery holds up fairly well IMO
pretty much everything i want to say and much more
my recomendation
1. blade runner ridley scott one
2. dark
3. ghost in a shell anime one
4. akira anime one
5. total recall arnold one
Dark the netflix series?
I am going to totally disagree with you on Mute...I loved every bit of it. Of course I also love Black Mirror and The Matrix but only #1 & #2
...btw...Your recommendation of Existenz and it's connection to D.C. / Naked Lunch scares me to my core...The Naked Lunch ... scared me so badly I peed my pants in the theatre...[no joke] my husband had to carry me out of the theatre I completely lost my mind... we literally saw no other horror, thriller or dark movies for the rest of that year...it still causes me nightmares and daymares just thinking of it...I hope Existenz has nothing that gets me down that similar bad rabbit hole...The 5th Element is one of my go to movies in this subgenre...I am embarrassed to say I never saw Johnny Mnemonic I will fix that soon...Dark City & The Tetsuo movies look great Thanks as always for these lists they are really way better than the millions of others I no longer subscribe to!
Existenz probably isn't as frightening as Naked Lunch but it does have the body horror elements. It's more or less just "weird" in Existenz in my opinion whereas Naked Lunch is more "Nightmare Fuel".
" I never read books "... What a sad thing to say.
... and I said it on the internet, so you know it’s true.
“I never read books....” You won’t even understand then how sad that is.
If you want to get into Cyberpunk stuff watch Love Death and Robots
I love every movie on his list but my mom is a sci-fi junkie so I don’t count😂
you sound like a kid yourself lol and both blade runner movies are boring
Gaddamit I watched everything.
I think MUTE was a really good Cyberpunk movie , as well as Ghost in the Shell 2017!
ALTERED CARBON!
Not a movie
Where is A.I from Spielberg , I,Robot !
No Tank Girl?
Meh, it's a cult thing but not really a good movie. I could see it getting on a list with a different topic but never really considered it for this one.
Top 10 cyber punk movies ever
5th element
Matrix
Akira
Hackers
Ghost in the shell 1995
Blade runner
Strange days
Terminator
Metropolis animated
Children of men
No particular order but If I would have to choose matrix is number 1.
How could u forget Elisyum????
